11.01.2022 2020: An increase in childhood shortsightedness due to decreased time spent outdoors and increased screen time. Childhood short-sightedness, also known as childhood Myopia, increased significantly in young children in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a large Chinese study. Of the 123,000 school-children, the study found the prevalence increase as much as 400% in six year old's, 200% in children of seven years, and 40% in 8 years, when compared to 2015-2019 cas...es. For Australian parents who have been lucky to avoid long lock-downs (vs the 5 month lock-down in China) this comes as a warning and re-enforces previous advice that children, particularly young children, are vulnerable to short sightedness. Screen time (as a near to eye task) should be time limited and spending time outdoors is crucial allowing the eyes to view longer and further. It is also crucial parents ensure their children have a regular eye check, just as they would with a dentist for teeth and decay prevention.
