25.01.2022 Japanese Ghosts are obviously popular. Read the article for Yuki Onna here too.

25.01.2022 Tomokazu Matsuyama at Bowery Wall : Many of our clients have Matzu works and will fully appreciate the 'wow' factor of one on this scale. Of special note is that there are no shortcuts. Matzu uses his studio techniques in all their detailed glory to create this massive artwork for us to enjoy.

24.01.2022 I’m finding out new things about Japan all the time, and I’ll never figure it out that’s what I love about it so much This sentence will resonate with each of us associated deeply with Japan. Dan Bailey explores the ever present tensions between national and individual identity in Japan through some of its subcultures.

24.01.2022 Japanese Supernatural with Melbourne artist Daniel Truscott

24.01.2022 The popularity of Japanese prints continues. One of my favourite contemporary print artists is Imamura Yoshio. Imamura incorporates alchemical and exotic spiritual symbols from European culture in many of his works. With his superb techniques and use of traditional gold and silver foil, he creates intriguing cross-cultural works: http://www.kehoe.com.au/art/story-two-seduced-by-the-other/. I've included a couple of images that we have in the gallery. If you are a Libra, there's one for your birth month.

23.01.2022 Exploring Japanese Ghosts 3: 1.ROKURO-KUBI LONG-NECKED SPECTRE Daniel Truscott oil paint on linen 122 x 182 cm Usually female, but also male, these are spectres with either necks that extend or heads that come apart from the body (nuke-kubi) and float around by themselves while the body sleeps. Lafcadio Hearn in Kwaidan tells the story of a samurai turned wandering priest who shelters with a woodcutter and his companions, only to awaken during the night to see headless b...odies. Knowing that separating the body from the head is the way to save himself, the priest hides the bodies. As dawn breaks and the power of the spectres fades, he finds himself left with a severed head. What follows is a complicated story wherein the priest keeps the head as a souvenir and is subsequently charged with murder until an aged and wise judge inspects the neck for the revealing red characters of a rokuro-kubi. 19.01.2022 Exploring Japanese Ghosts 2: UMIBOZU - MONSTER SEA PRIESTS oil paint on linen 122 x 182 cm Melbourne Artist Daniel Truscott's favourite ghosts, these are monsters with a large, round head, resembling the shaven head of a Buddhist monk. They appear to shipwreck victims and fishermen. According to one story, an angry Umibozu will demand a barrel to fill with sea water to drown the crew. The secret to avoiding this disastrous fate, is a bottomless barrel.

18.01.2022 "The classical Japanese theatre, which combines highly stylised movement and unusual vocalisation, will swap samurai swords for lightsabers and replace feudal warriors with the forces of light and darkness." Reminiscences of midnight Star Wars screenings with kids in costume, I couldn't resist posting this. Live watch on Thursday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alZe87qJsh0 - who could resist the combination of Star Wars and Kabuki theatre- and after all George Lucas took inspiration from....

18.01.2022 Spring Inside the gallery and Spring outside the gallery: Spring comes to LKG in the form of these beautiful 2-fold screens from contemporary screen artist Maio Motoko). Entitled Tane (Seed in English), the two sides of these works represent the cycle of life, from seed to blossom to seed again. In vibrant colours and Japanese washi, the artist creates the renewing energy of Spring and reminds us of the constant changes and transience of life. Complementing the screens is the sensual bamboo sculpture To Warm The Heart by Kizaki Kazutoshi, something Spring surely does for each of us.

17.01.2022 Exploring Japanese Ghosts: we are coming up to Halloween so what better time to explore the stories behind the Daniel Truscott paintings we posted recently. Today: YUKI ONNA THE LADY OF THE SNOW Oil Paint on Linen 198 x 91 cm A seductively beautiful woman, Yuki Onna is said to have vampirish tendencies. Lafcadio Hearn in his work In Ghostly Japan tells this story: In short, a pair of woodcutters, one young and one very old shelter from a snowstorm in a hut. The young on...e awakes to see a beautiful woman bent over his companion stealing his breath. Saved from the same fate by his youthful beauty, the young man is sworn upon death to secrecy. Some years later, this youth is wed to a woman called Yuki (snow) and has ten children. Reminiscing with his dutiful and perfect Yuki one night, he tells her of the strange encounter with the woman in the snow. Viciously turned upon by his wife, he of course discovers her to be Yuki Onna! Compassion wins again as he is saved by his duty of care to their children. See more

13.01.2022 Tea instead of sake? beautiful vessels to use everyday, prices starting at $140. Ichino Masahiko says of his funky striped vessel: " the breathtaking art of red and black contrast with line design perhaps the expression of self-transcendence"

13.01.2022 Does Japanese culture intrigue and interest you? Do you like to gift experiences, or host sophisticated events for colleagues, friends or family? If this sounds like you then tomorrow provides an opportunity to purchase one (or three!) unique Japanese cultural experiences at the Leonard Joel Bushfire Relief Auction (Auction starts 6pm). You can bid online, in real time, by Absentee Bidding or in person.... There will no Buyers Premium, donations are unreserved and 100% of the proceeds go to the carefully selected Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Founder of Sake Connect - Consultant, WSET Sake Educator and International Sake Judge, Melissa Mills has donated a sale master class and guided tasting of 6 sake styles for 8 people at a venue of your choosing. Melissa recently took a group of over 40 people on a guided tasting journey at the gallery and wowed everyone with the nuances and subtleties of this delicious, refined, culturally important and treasured national drink of Japan. The second experience is one that Lesley has been known to gift herself (at least) every Christmas - an ikebana installation by Dr Shoso Shimbo. A master Ikebana artist and certified teacher with over 30 years experience with this practice and craft, Shimbos creations are works of beauty that never fail to elicit exclamations of appreciation from all. More sculpture than floral arrangement, they seem to breathe life into the vessels and surrounds for which they are created. If floral arrangements can take your breath away and bring joy to your life, then this is for you! Venue and time by mutual agreement. The third experience is a private and customised Chado (Japanese tea) experience for four people (approx 2 hours). Donated by the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Melbourne Association, this experience will also include light refreshments, Japanese sake and artisanal Japanese confectionery. Whether you purchase this for an anniversary, birthday, special occasion or just for pleasure, tea will be prepared and served with utensils and artworks matched to the theme of the event. https://admin.mailbase.com.au//6C57B24A80F86BA02540EF23F30

06.01.2022 " Youll leave wondering: Do animals play such a pervasive role in the art of any other culture? " Highly recommend the catalogue for this exhibition, wonderful insights into the significance of some of the animals. Wish I were there to view. Catalogue: https://www.amazon.com/Life-Animals-Japanese-A//0691191166.

06.01.2022 Inspiring story of dedicated collectors and their contribution, not made without difficulty, and sadly the seemingly growing trend of 're-colonizing' Asian art in arts institutions:" ...the recent announcement that the holdings of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst in Berlin are to be integrated into the citys Humboldt Forum alongside ethnographic, African, American and Oceanic collections, and that its retiring specialist director was not to be replaced, appears to be a step backwards. "

05.01.2022 CURRENT EXHIBITION: RUDI MINEUR In 1991, inspired by the prospect of sharing the authoritative originality of the Rudis work at a netsuke convention in San Francisco, director Lesley Kehoe wrote: I believe that netsuke as an artform has only just been discovered and that in the work of the contemporary carvers, particularly the non-Japanese carverswe shall see netsukebe recognized as a highly significant form of sculptural art. ... (INS Journal article Australian Netsuke Vol 11 No.3 Fall 1991) Since that time, contemporary Japanese artists and sculptors from all over the world have taken up the form as their means of creative expression. The allure of its intimate form has seen netsuke transcend historical and geographical boundaries to become an internationally recognized art genre accompanied by astonishing international prices. That Rudi and several Melbourne based master netsuke artists are represented in collections worldwide and in the collection of contemporary netsuke at the Tokyo National Museum, verifies the significant contribution of non-Japanese artists to the reinvigoration of the artform. I continue to hold the view Rudis unique work has been the platform for its transformation from a quirky manifestation of Japanese culture to a serious form of sculpture. To paraphrase fellow carver Guy Shaw at the 1990 London International Netsuke Convention, He has returned to the origins of netsuke, re-interpreted and re-directed. Rudi's latest works will be available to view in the gallery @101 Collins St Wed - Friday 11am-5pm, Nov 20th - Dec 11th

Bid online, in real time, by Absentee Bidding or in person We're proud to share the contributions of our community in Australia and Japan to this Sunday's Bushfire Relief Auction, and trust that their care and concern will see significant donations to the bushfire relief on Sunday.

02.01.2022 How to reconcile the concept of Japanese art as 'minimalist' with the obvious very decorative tradition; the influence of inside and outside perceptions. Well worth reading and if you haven't read Pitelka or Guth, mentioned in the article, strongly recommended.

02.01.2022 "The Murakami is the kind of purchase that makes us look like provincial fashion victims, ready to follow where the dealers lead." Thank you John McDonald, a rational voice in the Emperor's New Clothes world of contemporary art. Read in conjunction with Murakami's interview in the Guardian https://www.theguardian.com//takashi-murakami-japans-rock- and laugh or cry?

01.01.2022 " It appears you don't approve. I'm so sorry. But I'm afraid there's really nothing you can do about it. The artists of this world are uniquely vulnerable. They wish to create beauty, and the world cares for nothing but money. Even the cattle who will buy these...trivial pieces hold the artist in contempt. " From Unworthy of the Angel Stephen Donaldson short story in Daughter of Regals 1984. The speaker is a gallery owner, alias Satan. I read this last night and then this morning the news of the Banksy sale price. Nothing more to be said.
