25.01.2022 http:// Let’s eat! // Oh if only it was that simple, huh? Feeding therapy is a growing area of need for families in the south west - did you know that your local speechie is just one of the many members of the multi disciplinary team that can support your child’s development of feeding skills? Currently the main theoretical approaches to managing infants and children with feeding disorders include -... Flooding - intense and rapid exposure to the undesired stimulus. It’s thought to help reduce anxiety and meal time avoidance. Oral Motor Approaches - this is an area of limited research and verdict is still out on the functional impacts. But these approaches and programs offer stimulation to the lips, cheeks, gums and tongue. It’s goals are to improve range of motion, strength, variety and control of movements of the little one’s oral musculature. Behavioural Learning Approaches - These set out to reward the behaviour that we want to see, and discourage the behaviours that we want to eliminate. These approaches have been found to improve children’s appetites, oral intake, positive mealtime behaviours and acceptance of foods. Systematic Desensitisation - a similar, but slower and more paced, approach to Flooding. Here there is a much slower and more gradual exposure to the child’s negative stimulus (ie. the food that is causing them distress and/or anxiety). The kiddo is in control of the rate and exposure to the food (whereas the therapist controls these aspects when adopting the Flooding approach). Do any of these tickle your pickle or do you want to know more? Connect with your nearest speechie and book in for a chat! #feedingtherapy #feeding #speechtherapy #dysphagia #swallow

15.01.2022 How have we never thought of this before?! Making our /s/ sound cards THAT much more exciting by attempting a house of cards! This kiddo has the best little engineering mind, loves LEGO and is into all things construction ... so it seemed like a no brainer motivator! #therapyhacks #speech #learningforlife

09.01.2022 Oh hey there I’ve never done a formal introduction of the woman behind the account! I’m Miss Em (to most of you!), a speechie and the owner of Learning for Life Therapy Services. I have been SO lucky to work across many sites and with clients of all ages in my (almost) ten year speechie career. I am super passionate about empowering my families to work collaboratively towards their communication and/or feeding goals. ... During the week you’ll find me workin’ in the clinic, schools, nursing homes, home visits or daycares and chances are I’ll be smiling because I’m doing what I love On weekends you’ll find me in my happy place(s) - nose in a book, camping somewhere exploring our epic backyard or hanging with all my nearest and dearest Thank you so much for supporting @lfl_therapies and the work that we do. We honestly believe we have the best gig in the world because of the amazing families we get to support. Happy Friday LFL fam! #speech #language #speechie #slpeeps #southwest #therapy
