16.01.2022 At the #ACTHeritageLibrary we were recently asked about trees seen on the top of buildings around Canberra. "Tree topping" or "topping off" was a common sight in Canberra in the 1970s. Workers would attach a tree to the highest point of a new structure. The tradition began approximately 2700 BC to the time of the Egyptians. A live plant honoured those who died during a pyramid's construction. An evergreen tree was placed on the highest point of a newly completed building in the early Italian Renaissance. Following the Renaissance various countries modified the ceremony to fit local custom. Tree topping symbolises the safe completion of the most dangerous phase of construction. We hope this tops off your day!

15.01.2022 Have you been hanging out for Hideout, Jack Heath’s newest book from the very popular, and very gruesome Hangman series ? We’re proud to call Jack one of our very own local Canberra authors and we were so excited to have Andrew Bell host him at the ACT Heritage Library for our #ReadLocal author conversations series: https://vimeo.com/481562041 ... Check out the interview and find out how the very lively, smiley, friendly Jack comes up with such dark, threatening characters and twisted story lines. Plus, hear what has influenced him, how he uses humour and the mundane to create interest, and what he recommends for kids and adults if you haven’t read any of his books yet. Wishing Jack Heath all the best for the JACK HEATH ‘HIDEOUT’ BOOK LAUNCH on Sunday at Dymocks Belconnen! Meanwhile, we’ve got Hideout on order, so you can reserve it now: bit.ly/LibrariesACT-Catalogue-JackHeath
