25.01.2022 Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of Great Britain at the most critical time of World War II, when he was 66, already past retirement age!

24.01.2022 I'm aware that I sometimes gain students due to NAPLAN concerns but I suspect I keep them because I help kids learn overall.

23.01.2022 The person who does not read has no advantage over the person who cannot!

23.01.2022 Hi, I’m Lindsay Went. I’m 44 years old and this is my 25th year of tutoring K-8 children. Is your child struggling at school? Would you like to see your child succeed at school? Do you want them to enjoy learning? It can happen. I am a teacher, a father, a lifelong learner and I can help your child improve....Continue reading

22.01.2022 The more your children read, the better they will learn. I can help their reading technique and understanding, but it all happens much faster if they're practicing regularly!

19.01.2022 I've been leaving this group alone while I have been holidaying and upgrading my website, but with that nearly done and the year underway, it's time to activate it. There will be lots of material posted going forward, some for your kids and some for you as parents and members of the community. Welcome to 2016!

18.01.2022 20 Awesome historical words we should bring back.

18.01.2022 Later on, Chris Riddell published his sequel.

17.01.2022 Things have changed! Not always for the better, either.

15.01.2022 Ahhh, NAPLAN for Year 1, http://www.abc.net.au//federal-government-consider/8220904. It won't help the kids just as a decade of NAPLAN hasn't resulted in improved academic outcomes. At least it might help me I suppose and send more kids to me. I might note that I spend most of my time on working with the kids, not testing them.

12.01.2022 http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//reading-recovery-program- Reading Recovery has spent many years avoiding full scrutiny of its results and this isn't the first report to ask the question. It won't be the last either. I don't use many of its tenets in my own tutoring because it is, on my reading of the evidence, ineffective.

12.01.2022 I do teach order of operations at Lindsay Went Tutoring so hopefully my kids will generally get it right!

11.01.2022 This is a completely awe inspiring passage... The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing fo...r it then to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn. T.H. White, The Once and Future King Cross posted at https://silkenmusings.blogspot.com.au/

11.01.2022 Uncle Neil again. I can't help quoting the man - he's right. The marvellously talented Chris Riddell put this together.

11.01.2022 Maintaining the Space theme today. This magnificent video compares the relative size of planets and stars in the MIlky Way! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEheh1BH34Q

10.01.2022 As adults we choose our own reading material. Depending on our moods and needs we might read the newspaper, a blockbuster novel, an academic article, a women's magazine, a comic, a children's book, or the latest book that just about everyone is reading. No one chastises us for our choice. No one says, 'That's too short for you to read.' No one says, 'That's too easy for you, put it back.' No one says 'You couldn't read that if you tried -- it's much too difficult.' Yet if we... take a peek into classrooms, libraries, and bookshops we will notice that children's choices are often mocked, censured, and denied as valid by idiotic, interfering teachers, librarians, and parents. Choice is a personal matter that changes with experience, changes with mood, and changes with need. We should let it be. 10.01.2022 So, without further adieu, it's my privilege to present LWT's inaugural site of the week! *Drum roll* And the site is ...https://www.brainbashers.com/opticalillusions.asp This is a brilliant site with this section being devoted to optical illusions, I have several optical illusion books and the kids love them! 09.01.2022 Logic Puzzles for the week! Take your time or you will be caught out :) (1) A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? _____ cents (2) If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets? _____ minutes... (3) In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake? _____ days

07.01.2022 Education costs money, but then so does ignorance. Claus Moser, high ranking British public servant and Chief Statistician.

07.01.2022 We all know that there's a wealth of exceptional web sites out there for our kids to look at, what we tend to struggle with is directing ourselves and our kids to those web sites. Never fear, Lindsay Went Tutoring is here! :) I will, each week, put up a website that will interest your children and may even interest you!

07.01.2022 Neil DeGrasse Tyson was once asked what was the most astounding fact he'd discovered about the Universe. Off the cuff, he produced this marvellous answer, which a number of creative people have riffed off. https://www.youtube.com/watch

06.01.2022 Hope you've had a great week! Does your child love space? Do you? Take a look at this brilliant tour of the International Space station - some awesome views of the Earth included! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhGydridbEA&t=1154s

03.01.2022 It’s fair to say I have a bit of a love affair going with Mem Fox. Beyond the fact she’s written some of the greatest picture books of all time, she’s been a devoted and passionate teacher of English and how to teach English. She and I have some differences regarding the importance of systematically teaching phonics, but there’s an incredible amount of common ground between us. Being such a passionate advocate for teaching and learning, Mem’s taken the time to include some...Continue reading

03.01.2022 The first thing I'm putting up is a link to an speech by Neil Gaiman, explaining why libraries and reading are so important. It's a call to action in a world where libraries are coming under threat in many countries - America and Britain I'm looking at you and where their necessity is being questioned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNIUWv9_ZH0

03.01.2022 So eloquent, so true.

03.01.2022 I was complaining again this week about my daughter's homework yet I must admit that I sometimes give homework to students I tutor. What's the difference? For me, it's that any homework I give is individually allocated, it's been given for a specific purpose to help that individual student. Secondly, I intend for that student to be able to do the homework, it's not aimed at their parents!

02.01.2022 Welcome back to Term 4! We just made lay bys for Xmas, this year has taken wings I am sure! Does your child love optical illusions? Judging from how often they look at my optical illusion books, quite a few of them do! There's an absolute truckload of them at https://www.brainbashers.com/opticalillusions.asp... 194 at last count, well worth a look for you and your kids :):) Once again, this has been published at https://silkenmusings.blogspot.com.au/ and at https://www.facebook.com/lindsaywenttutoring/

01.01.2022 No piece of square paper can be folded more than 7 times in half. Before you quote this 'fact', you may wish to look at the following video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRAEBbotuIE

01.01.2022 The website has been updated! www.lindsaywent.com is once again fully functional. I took the opportunity to remove some unnecessary pages and to reduce the amount of content more generally. There was no question I'd gotten too wordy in places. Imagine that? :) A big tip of the hat to my friend Andrew Molloy, author of some brilliantly researched local histories, for his help with the website, and to Michael Lai, Cassie's godfather, for his sterling job in editing my over-enthusiastic prose.

01.01.2022 It's a good thing that Australian schools don't work like this, I'd be out of a job! On the other hand, I'd walk over broken glass to work full time in such a system! http://fillingmymap.com//11-ways-finlands-education-syste/

01.01.2022 Did you know that the silkworm consumes 86 000 times its own weight in 56 days?!! If you weighed 50 kilograms, you'd be eating 430 tons of food over the next 8 weeks, so snap to it boys and girls!
