25.01.2022 Temporary Closure of Hassans Walls Road, Lithgow Council wishes to advise residents of the temporary closure of Hassans Walls Road, Lithgow, from Rutherford Lane to Hassans Walls Lookout. Following recent rain events, a large tree has dislodged, causing erosion and failure at the edge of the road embankment. The temporary road closure will commence from Tuesday, 15 September 2020, to allow Council contractors to carry out stabilisation and rectification works to the affected ...area. Works are expected to be completed on Friday, 18 September 2020, weather permitting. Access to Hassans Walls Lookout through the Hartley Valley Road / Browns Gap Road entrance will be available whilst works are carried out. 24.01.2022 Local Flora and Fauna Celebrated in Design of New Amenities Block at Pioneer Park As part of the planned upgrades at Pioneer Park Lithgow, Lithgow City Council is installing a new twin accessible toilet block with an exterior photographic wrap featuring a Regent Honeyeater and Large-Fruited Tea Tree. Over recent years, Council has installed a number of automatic accessible toilets including at Blast Furnace, Endeavour Park and Cook Street Plaza. These state of the art self...-cleaning toilets have been a big hit with the community and have lower maintenance and repair costs than traditional toilets. A key feature of the toilets is the ability to wrap them in photo film highlighting local history, places of interest and local flora and fauna. The design of the new Pioneer Park toilet thematically connects to Ludwina Roebuck’s artwork, Bird Houses (2018), commissioned by Lithgow Tidy Towns, and promotes the natural beauty of our region. The Regent Honeyeater, one of the most important avian pollinators of native plant species, is found in the Capertee Valley and is the focus of a large conservation program led by Taronga Zoo and BirdLife Australia. The Large-Fruited Tea Tree, officially adopted as the Lithgow’s town flower in 1998, is native to the high plateau around Clarence. I’m excited to see a new toilet going into the top of Main Street, said Mayor Ray Thompson. The design of the amenities block is an opportunity to create a vibrant space for the community and promote our unique assets to visitors. As well as adding colour to Pioneer Park, the design will raise awareness of this rare bird species. The new toilet will be available for use once further works are completed in Pioneer Park including an accessible pathway and landscaping.

23.01.2022 Solar Panel and Battery Installation Council Administration Building To reduce energy costs and provide a power contingency measure, Council recently installed solar panels and Tesla batteries at the Lithgow Council Administration Building. On a sunny day, the 74.1kW system generates enough electricity to power the administration building and charge the 81kWh Tesla battery system, which will provide power to the building throughout the night said Lithgow City Council’s Ma...yor, Councillor Ray Thompson. The system will also ensure that the Council administration building can remain operational in the event of a grid power outage which speaks to improved business continuity in emergency situations continued Mayor Thompson. The installation of this high-capacity solar panel and battery system meets a number of strategic objectives of the Council. In line with the Community Strategic Plan 2030, this project reduces the cost of Council’s operation and its carbon footprint, improves the resilience and self-sufficiency of the core business, demonstrates local support for innovative technology and practice, and provides revenue generating opportunities through the feeding of excess electricity to the grid. This is just one of Council’s projects which aim to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation, said Mayor Thompson. The Council and the Administration continue to look to the future and seize opportunities to innovate and try something new for the betterment of Lithgow. I look forward to sharing progress on other projects as they develop.

16.01.2022 Water Night A National Challenge to Become Water Mindful Residents are being encouraged to register to participate in the first ever national Water Night to be held across Australia on Thursday, 22 October 2020. Lithgow City Council and not-for-profit water efficiency experts Smart Approved WaterMark are inviting residents to participate in the national water appreciation event to raise awareness around habitual water use and improve water mindfulness. ... Water Night commences Thursday 22 October, during National Water Week. Residents are being asked to not use running water and to survive for one night on just one bucket of water for all household needs between 5pm and 5am (with the exception of drinking water, CovidSafe handwashing, religious purposes and flushing). Register now to participate in Water Night 2020 at https://waternight.com.au/#register Smart Approved WaterMark’s research identified that Australians are all very much on auto-pilot when using water. The study shows that 55% of people say they are addicted to their taps and 63% think they could save more water than they do. By limiting the use of taps for one night, Water Night highlights just how often we reach for our taps and how subconsciously it’s done. Being aware of how we use water helps to gain a whole new perspective on how we use and save water now and in the future. For more information on Water Night, including access to tools and registration, visit www.waternight.com.au You can monitor your water use by signing up for MiWater. MiWater allows you to access your water meter data in near real time so you can see where and how much water is used around the home. To sign up for MiWater, please visit www.lithgow.miwater.co
15.01.2022 Interruption to Water Service Council is asking all residents in the areas of Portland, Wallerawang, Lidsdale, Cullen Bullen, Glen Davis and Rydal to continue to conserve water due to the WaterNSW water main break reported Tuesday 13 October. Residents in these areas are urged to limit usage to necessary water use and conserve water until further notice. Please do not utilise water for washing cars, watering lawns and gardens, limit shower times, only wash clothes and dishes... as necessary. Please do not fill tanks, baths etc as this is placing additional demand on the system and depletes water in storage reservoirs. Council wishes to re-enforce that there is sufficient water to maintain a safe supply and if residents are water wise Council and WaterNSW will not need to implement emergency measures. Should these measures need to be taken to provide a supply of water, the water provided will be untreated water and may not be fit for human consumption. Should this occur residents will be required to boil water for an extended period, therefore we are asking residents to conserve water so these measures are not required to be implemented. Council and WaterNSW wishes to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, should you require any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact Council on (02) 6354 9999 or email [email protected] or if you are a customer of WaterNSW please contact WaterNSW on 1300 662 077 or email [email protected]

06.01.2022 Accessible Fishing Pontoon for Lake Wallace Lithgow Council Mayor Ray Thompson recently joined Adam Marshall MP Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW and local Member Paul Toole MP at Lake Wallace to announce a NSW Recreational Fishing Trust grant for an accessible fishing pontoon suitable for fishers facing mobility difficulties. As many locals know, Lake Wallace is a popular recreational fishing location stocked with a range of inland fish species, something that more an...d more visitors to the area are discovering. Ray Tang from the Wallerawang Central Acclimatisation Society which holds regular fishing, restocking and pest species removal events at the lake, approached Lithgow City Council with the idea of constructing an accessible fishing platform on the lake. A number of the Societys members are either in wheelchairs or face mobility difficulties that have prevented them from shore fishing or from accessing the best fishing spots on the lake. After doing a lot of research into the best approach, it was decided that a modular floating platform made of interlocked and anchored floating blocks, together with non-slip vinyl matting and guard rails would be the most suitable and affordable option. This is an exciting project, said the Mayor Ray Thompson. Ray Tang and his group have been very active in promoting Lake Wallace as a fishing destination for many years and Im pleased that it is going to be an even better fishing location for the increasing number of locals and visitors who go there, especially older people and people with a disability. The floating platform will be one of the first of its kind in inland NSW constructed solely for recreational fishing. It will extend around 30 metres from shore to a deep hole where fishing is known to be good, giving fishers an opportunity to fish and to participate in community life. Being a modular floating system, it can easily be relocated elsewhere on the lake should fishing conditions change in the future. The funding announcement coincided with the restocking of the lake with rainbow trout by the NSW Department of Primary Industries Fisheries and a further announcement of funding for fishing infrastructure at Mill Pond Portland. Mr Tang is to be commended for his work in bringing together a number of organisations to provide funding support for the project including his own organisation, Energy Australia, the CFMEU, South West Miners Union and Lithgow City Council. I would also like to thank Energy Australia for allowing this project to proceed, concluded the Mayor.

06.01.2022 NAIDOC 2020 Flag Raising Mayor Ray Thompson and Aunty Helen Riley raised the Aboriginal Flag outside Lithgow City Council Chambers today in recognition of NAIDOC Week 2020. Lithgow City Council is proud to have partnered with the local indigenous community over many years and NAIDOC is one of the ways that Council supports local community groups to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. ... Due to the Covid pandemic NAIDOC activities have been limited this year with the postponement of the NAIDOC celebrations, usually held on country in October and the NAIDOC Storytime held at the Lithgow Library during NAIDOC week. Local Indigenous Elder Aunty Helen Riley raised the Aboriginal Flag with Mayor of Lithgow City Council Ray Thompson today, acknowledging the difficult year it has been for all and especially the vulnerable First Nations people in our communities. The Mayor said This year has been unprecedented in our community, with the droughts, the bushfires and the pandemic. I want to acknowledge the major contribution that First Nations People make to our community, both within Council itself as members of committees and within the wider community with all the diverse roles held by indigenous people. 05.01.2022 Future Lithgow what it takes to grow the economy Lithgow Council has welcomed the report by its volunteer working group on the case for economic change for the future of Lithgow. The Transition Working Group came together following an expression of interest call by Council for community volunteer representatives to participate in examining the future industry base for the Lithgow Local Government Area. Their final report is now complete with Lithgow Councillor’s briefed by... the group. Lithgow Mayor Ray Thompson thanked the working group members Renzo Benedet, Rob Swinton, Rich Evans and Glenda Anthes for their diligence and hard work on the report and their far sighted recommendations. Lithgow has a long history as an industrial and coal mining area, which has been highly beneficial to Lithgow’s economy said Mayor Thompson. However, times are changing and Lithgow needs to prepare and plan for its future building upon the legacies of the past. The city is on Sydney’s doorstep and every effort should be made to seize on opportunities for greater integration and beneficial impact on our LGA. This report is timely and provides a roadmap to future industries for Lithgow covering advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, health, agricultural production, creative industries and entertainment, tourism and start-up ventures. Transition Working Group Chair, Renzo Benedet said Lithgow cannot rely upon coal and coal based power generation to play the role that it has in the past. We need to broaden our economy, and the jobs on offer. We need growth, not business as usual. The Lithgow region has many outstanding assets and it should be one of the prime locations in the State for new investment. The four key enablers identified by the working group, along with seven new industries, has the potential to create 4,000 new jobs over the next 20 years. This is a massive change for Lithgow and with the right mindset and governance the outcomes can be realised. The report makes 33 recommendations. Of key importance is the recommendation to create an independent Economic Development Board to oversee industry development and also the requirement for substantial Federal and State funding going towards the region’s economic transition. The report and its recommendations will be thoroughly considered by Council and is also available for view on Council’s website https://council.lithgow.com/case-for-economic-change-report/ where comments and suggestions can be made.

Indyreads also includes books from independent Australian and international publishers as well as the best examples of self-publishing, offering communities a greater diversity of stories," says Ross Balharrie, indyreads project coordinator at the State Library of NSW. With indyreads Library members can get a lot more variety with something for every reader from high quality self-published works by local writers to international award-winning authors, modern classics, and even books in languages other than English, says Mr Balharrie. 03.01.2022 Application made for timber bridge replacements in the Capertee Valley This month, Lithgow City Council has made application for funding under the NSW Government Fixing Country Bridges program for the replacement of three timber bridges on Glen Davis Road. Glen Davis Road, connecting the Castlereagh Highway to the villages of Glen Alice and Glen Davis, currently features three single lane timber bridges each of which were constructed in the early 1940s. Recent assessments pre...dict that maintenance requirements for this ageing infrastructure will increase in the coming years. With this information, Council engineers have seized the opportunity offered by the NSW Government to replace Coco Creek, Crown Creek and Airlie Creek bridges with modern, dual-lane, concrete structures, said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Ray Thompson. Should these bridges require a temporary closure for any reason, detours of over 100 kilometres would apply which is a concern to Council. I am very pleased that Council is acting proactively to seek the financial assistance required to upgrade these assets. Replacement of these timber bridges will come at a total cost of just over $5 million, noted Council’s Director Infrastructure Services, Jonathon Edgecombe. However, this significant cost is offset by meeting Lithgow City Council’s strategic objective of enhancing regional development by connecting people and places in growing regions. By delivering improved rural community access and safety, Council is expanding on its targeted approach to delivering regional value through improved transport services and infrastructure that cater for the needs of the future. By prioritizing this project, said Mayor Thompson, Council aims to reduce future maintenance obligations, improve service standards to the community and further promote all that Lithgow has to offer. I sincerely thank Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole for their continued dedication to transport outcomes in regional and rural areas. Combined with the $1.83 million of joint Commonwealth, state and local funding allocated to the sealing of Glen Alice Road and Glen Davis Road, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our Capertee Valley.
