19.01.2022 CHRISTMAS STAR VISIBLE TONIGHT Jupiter and Saturn will align on December 21 to create a once-in-a-lifetime 'Christmas star'. This event, known as a gre...at conjunction, happens about once every 20 years, but closeness of the two planets makes this a very rare conjunction. With only about a 10th of a degree separating the two planets that's a fifth of the width of the Moon this is the closest they will have appeared in the sky to each other in nearly 400 years. The last time it occurred was in 1623. Assuming the weather is clear, you'll be able to see the spectacle with the naked eye if you look west from 7:30pm. But be quick - it'll only be visible for just over an hour before disappearing into the horizon. For those south of the river, the Perth Observatory and Fremantle Sidewalk Astronomy will set up telescopes at the picnic area at Dogs Beach in North Coogee from 7:45pm. If you live north of the river, BinoCentral and the Astronomical Society of Western Australia will will be at Burns Beach from 7:30pm. The Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory will be at Scarborough Beach from 7pm to 8pm. Tell the kids and let us know if you see it!
