18.01.2022 Thank you so much to everyone who was able to add their voice to the amazing swell of opposition to the phone ban bill this week! You may have heard that the Senate vote on the bill has been postponed, and will now not be looked at again until at least the next sitting in October. This is great news, because it means all of our voices made enough difference that the government didn't secure Lambie's vote (if it had, it would have rushed the bill through this week). Now it's j...ust a matter of keeping the pressure up, and Lambie has created the perfect way for us to do this! She's just released this survey, asking people for their opinions on how she should vote: https://www.senatorlambie.com.au/advise_jacqui It will be a huge influence on which way she decides to vote, so it's important that we flood it with calls for her to vote 'no - for the bill not to become law'. Anyone can fill it out, but of course the most powerful voices will be those of Tasmanians. Could you take a minute to make a huge difference by filling this out, and sharing with your (particularly Tasmanian!) networks? #NoPhonesNoLife #LoveMakesAWay

18.01.2022 It was a quiet morning at Kangaroo Point, after the high drama of the previous couple of days with Serco attempting to move some refugees to even worse circumstances. Supporters of the Medevac refugees have established a 24hr vigil to protect them from removal.

15.01.2022 In light of the news that the proposed Bill to allow the banning of phones will be voted on this week, this event could not be better timed! Join organiser Moz (incredible musician, locked up in the Mantra) tomorrow and call Alan Tudge to share your thoughts on this! "Can you imagine living in lockdown without access to your friends and family via the internet on your phone or computer? The refugees detained in the Mantra and Kangaroo Point hotel prisons will be facing living... in solitary confinement with no outside contact if Alan Tudge gets his way. On 1 September we are hosting a calling party and encourage you to contact Alan Tudge's office to let him know that Australians will not stand for the removal of phones from refugees in detention. ------------------------------- Call Alan Tudge's office: (02) 6277 7790. 14.01.2022 Love Makes A Way members will be joining this calling party organised by Moz (an incredible musician who is imprisoned in the Mantra Hotel) - join us to call for freedom and access to the lifeline of phones <3 Message from Moz: "People of Australia, we need your help!...Continue reading

13.01.2022 CHURCHES TASKFORCE SEEKS ASSURANCES TO REDUCE DETENTION HEALTH RISKS In an urgent letter to the Acting Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly and the Minister for Health, Mr Greg Hunt, the Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce of the National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA) has sought urgent assurances from the responsible government public health authorities that the people at detention centres in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney have safe accommodation during the ...continuing pandemic as social distancing is not possible in the common areas of current facilities and where bathrooms and bedrooms are shared. The Churches Taskforce appeals for guaranteed access to COVID-19 testing when any symptoms are present in immigration detention centres and an assurance that people moving in and out of these locations in a staff role are both trained and monitored with regard to the highest standards of infection control and prevention. Mr Rob Floyd, Chair of the Australian Churches’ Taskforce said that With the recent infections of staff assigned to the Mantra Hotel at Preston in Melbourne’s COVID 19 lockdown area, and Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney, we believe that the public health risks mean that those moving freely in and out of these centres pose the highest public health risk at this time. In seeking these assurances, we must reiterate that our preferred position is that refugees and asylum seekers in crowded immigration detention locations in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney are safely transferred into community housing as a public health benefit for all. We are some of the groups that have offered to help with housing Mr Floyd said. Our church members, chaplains and ministers, including religious sisters and brothers, who have previously undertaken visits and maintain life-giving and at times life-saving relationships with immigration detainees in Australia, have conveyed to us their utmost concern about the public health risks associated with the living conditions of refugees and asylum seekers in hotels and detention centres during the COVID 19 pandemic specifically at Preston VIC, Kangaroo Point QLD and Villawood NSW said Ms Liz Stone, General Secretary of the NCCA, in the urgent letter. Last week workers assigned to working with people detained at the Mantra Hotel at Preston and at Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney have tested positive for COVID-19. This was a scenario feared by one thousand medical professionals in April, who asked the Government to release refugees and people seeking asylum from detention into safe housing, as part of a responsible public health approach to this pandemic.

12.01.2022 Deteriorating mental health is an issue for many of these men. You can’t treat and improve someone’s mental health while they remain in the environment causing that condition. Understanding this, the Federal Government has already released most of the people it brought to Australia prior to the medevac legislation, at least into community detention.... But we understand not one of the 200 evacuated under medevac has been released into community detention.

11.01.2022 May freedom come for refugees and people seeking asylum at Kangaroo Point #BrisbaneAPOD

10.01.2022 June 14-20 is Refugee Week. In line with the theme for this year: Celebrating The Year Of Welcome, we'd like to thank The Very Rev'd Peter Catt (St John's Cathedral), The Rev'd Canon Gary Harch (St Mary's Anglican Kangaroo Point), Father Denis Scanlan (Stafford Catholic Parish), and Rev David Busch (Uniting Church Qld South Moreton Presbytery Minister) for joining other faith leaders at a sunset vigil for refugees at Kangaroo Point, just across the river from Brisbane CBD las...t Friday. We've heard confirmed accounts of how bad things really are for the mental and physical health of refugees and people seeking asylum at Kangaroo Point APOD (Alternative Place of Detention) 115 people are detained there under prison-like conditions. There has been reported self-harm, at least one attempted suicide, and multiple hunger strikes. Daily protests by detainees are escalating. Apart from prolonged detention (most of these men have been detained for 7 years or more), the mental health of these men has also been gravely impacted further by COVID-19 related restrictions and stress (visiting has not been allowed for months and not even being allowed access to go for walks outside the compound). People in the community are concerned that keeping these men detained in the current arrangements will result in serious adverse events. Attempts to remove them to an even more locked-down facility will only create more harm. Some ideas have been suggested to reduce the mental health risk, and to create welcome for people seeking safety: - Allowing community detention for those with families in community detention, or community sponsors who have pledged support - Turn this APOD into a Reception Centre as another community detention option that is more closely aligned with respect for human dignity and duty of care for human life. As the protest inside and outside the facility continue please pray and show your support. May freedom and safety come for refugees and people seeking asylum. -- First photo: "Saif Ali Saif on Kangaroo Point detention centre balcony speaks via phone and rally sound system to wife and son outside at rally for refugees on Saturday. 10.01.2022 Dedicated to our friends who have been released and who are still at Kangaroo Point and BITA. From all of us in Brisbane who dare to believe that Love Has The Final Word. To the Friends who are still locked up, we haven't forgotten you. God is here in your suffering. We will not rest until Freedom comes for ALL refugees and people seeking asylum. #OneOutAllOut Words & Music by Andrew Foley from Christ Collective. Performed by Peter Branjerdporn from West End Uniting Church.

09.01.2022 UPDATE: We understand that the amendment to the Migration Amendment (Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention Facilities Bill 2020), will be voted on today (W...ed 2 Sept) by the House of Representatives, and if passed there (almost certain to pass) it is listed to be voted by the Senate tomorrow or Friday. It has been delayed due to lot of advocacy work in the last week. UPDATE: Senator Rex Patrick has said publicly he will now oppose the bill! So now it's down to Lambie. After wider discussions, we're asking individuals from outside of the independent senators' states NOT to call her office. This can be counter productive as it can overwhelm and annoy already very busy independents' offices. However, for those in Tasmania, you can contact Senator Jacqui Lambie, probably best by email as my understanding is many are lined up to call from inside Tasmania - [email protected]. For asylum seekers in detention, mobile phones are a lifeline. They enable access to families, loved ones, legal representation, health support and the outside world and make it possible for people to shine a light on what's really going on inside immigration detention centres. The government hasn’t made a reasonable case for this grab-bag of powers, when police can already investigate and act around any allegations of illegality. URGENT ACTIONS: Signing and sharing relevant petitions (see below) and sharing positive stories and videos of the importance of refugees in detention are two important actions. As mentioned above, please don't call Senator Lambie's office if you don't live in Tasmania. Some important points reasons this bill needs to be rejected: Police already have powers to remove illegal substances and items Immigration detention centres are not prisons and detainees should not be treated as prisoners Refugees and people seeking asylum are in administrative detention because the government has not resolved their visa status. These people do not pose a security or criminal risk. The intention to remove mobile phones must be seen as an attempt to silence those held in detention, and to prevent public scrutiny and access to advocates and other support people. Mobile phones can enable detainees to hold staff accountable for their actions and place some constraint on excessive use of force detention staff. Most refugees and asylum seekers have been held in detention for very long periods, and their mobile phones are their lifeline and link to the outside world, including maintaining contact with family members here and overseas, and legal and other support contacts. Being able to maintain some connection to the world outside is essential maintaining mental health NOTES 1. 09.01.2022 Melbourne.. here’s an invite from Phil Hudson: ‘Singing last Tuesday outside the Park 'Hotel' Prison for the 60 guys inside who have been detained in detention centres for alomost 8 years. Singing songs of freedom again today at 5pm, 701 Swanston St, Carton, so join us if you can!’

08.01.2022 "One doesn’t have to be involved in prayer vigils for long to experience being yelled at for standing up for fairness and people’s right to live in peace and safety. These loudly expressed criticisms include Get a job!, Go home, do-gooders! and my favourite, You won’t make any difference! However, my experience shows me that the collective efforts of individuals can make a difference. Every action, big or small, absolutely makes a difference! Last week, 50 men who spent... nearly seven years trapped in immigration detention on Manus and Nauru plus up to two years locked up in a Kangaroo Point hotel were released with a Bridging Visa into our community with no logical explanation from the department... When we stand in solidarity with, and advocate for compassion for, people seeking safety we are embodying the Spirit of Christ. The Christ whose life, death and resurrection enable us to live the way God intended, where the end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the beloved community (The Rev’d Dr Martin Luther King Jr)." https://anglicanfocus.org.au//embodying-the-spirit-of-chr/

07.01.2022 Pray for these amazing brothers and sisters raising their voices in the pouring rain today

07.01.2022 ‘We want to know what is planned for those left behind’ LMAW Warrnambool asked their local representative Dan Tehan MP earlier today about refugees and people seeking asylum indefinitely incarcerated by our government. We continue to act and pray for the freedom of every single person seeking asylum. #7yearstoolong indeed. Lord have mercy.

06.01.2022 Love Makes A Way will be taking part in this action on Sunday - please join us, and encourage your faith communities to do the same <3 "We invite you to show your support and solidarity with all the refugees who are detained by the Australian government and for those who have lost in their lives while in detention. Very simply light a candle and take 7 minutes of silence, at 7pm (AEST)in your own home or backyard. We encourage you to go live as you do this, have an accompany...ing sign or message and then share your photograph/video after... Please use the hashtags #freetherefugees #7yearstoolong #GameOver This is a small act of hope, and of compassion. We would love you to join us."

05.01.2022 Simple powerful actions you can take TODAY to help ensure people in detention keep their phones #NoPhonesNoLife #LoveMakesAWay If you're in Tasmania: Email and call Tas Senator Jacqui Lambie and ask her to oppose the bill - along with Senator Patrick, her vote will decide its outcome. Encourage your friends, families, and Christian communities to do the same.... (08) 8232 1144 [email protected] If you're anywhere else: Sign this petition and call/write to your state Senators asking them to say NO to this bill https://www.change.org/p/dial-it-down-dutton-do/u/27629935

05.01.2022 BREAKING: Jacqui Lambie will vote against the mobile phone bill Thank you to everyone (tens of thousands of you!) who voiced your concerns to Senator Lambie. We want to thank her, and the other politicians who have committed to vote against this bill, for recognising that phones are a lifeline for people in detention. #NoPhoneNoLife #NoPhonesNoLife

05.01.2022 Be like Elise. ‘Elise Ganley entered the hospital emergency department to visit Farhad Rahmati from Iran, who she calls a "friend" but was later told she needed Australian Border Force approval and was asked to leave. I refused to move from where he was because it felt deeply against our Christian faith to leave him alone, the 27-year-old community worker said.’

04.01.2022 Attention lovely Tasmanians! <3 As constituents, your voices mean a lot to Jacqui Lambie, and will have a strong influence on how she will vote on the 'phone ban bill' (that could cut refugees and people seeking asylum off from their loved ones and the outside world). Join your voice with other Tasmanian Christians to ask Senator Lambie to vote against the bill, in this letter organised by Common Grace Add your signature by this Sunday 4th October <3 #NoPhonesNoLife #LoveMakesAWay

03.01.2022 As Senator Lambie will be making an announcement regarding this bill tomorrow, today is the perfect day for Tasmanian Christians to sign this letter and have your voice heard! #NoPhonesNoLife #LoveMakesAWay

02.01.2022 St Mary’s Anglican Church, Kangaroo Point parish priest The Rev’d Canon Gary Harch, who attended the vigil last month, has called upon Federal Government repres...entatives to ensure fairness and transparency and release the men into community detention. The Federal Government’s current policy prevents refugees from Manus or Nauru from rebuilding their lives in our communities despite the fact that seeking asylum is legal, Canon Harch said. The great majority of the men from Manus and Nauru in the Kangaroo Point hotel have been found to be refugees, so as leaders we have to ask, ‘Why are these men being detained indefinitely?’

01.01.2022 The faith community in Brisbane spent yesterday evening praying prayers of lament, singing songs and holding candles in silence for the refugees and men seeking asylum locked up in Kangaroo Point hotel who should be living in our community while their claims get processed. We plan to continue showing solidarity with these fathers, brothers and sons while it is safe and possible to do so, in a peaceful way. We pray because we believe only Love can make a way out of a seemingly hopeless situation.
