24.01.2022 Wonderful () volunteer Team Leader, and all round great guy ‘Chris’, shared this fantastic insight of his time serving those less fortunate at Mama Lana’s. Be sure to have a listen, and learn a bit more about Chris, his passion for Mama Lana’s - and why he does what he does. Great work Chris.

24.01.2022 Some people naturally need more sensory stimulation, while others need less. I fall into the "less" category. That's because I feel things MORE than others. E.g.... I have a low threshold for auditory input, so I notice noise more than others (I struggle to concentrate in noisy cafes, and am frightened by unexpected loud noises) and I’m sensitive to visual input (I don’t like lights being too bright). The idea that people are more or less sensitive to visual, auditory, touch, smell, taste and movement input is part of SENSORY PROCESSING. People who are MORE sensitive, may take measures to AVOID sensory input. People who are LESS sensitive, may take measures to SEEK sensory input. This is easy for adults to do. E.g. if I'm struggling to concentrate in a noisy cafe, I put my headphones in to screen out the noise. If the sun is too bright, I put my sunglasses on. Adults also develop coping mechanisms for when they experience unwanted sensory input. E.g. when I get frightened by a loud noise, I've learned to take a few deep breaths. Imagine being a child with sensory under- or over-sensitivity, and not having developed the measures to cope, or simply not being able to use them, because you're in an adult-controlled environment. E.g. a child who is sensitive to noise can't do much about being in a noisy classroom. A child who is less sensitive to movement, so is constantly seeking it, may have trouble sitting still on the mat and be reprimanded for this. A child who is sensitive to proprioceptive input may have a meltdown because someone brushed past them, but that brush felt like a BUMP. Or a child who is sensitive to tactile input may not be able to concentrate on painting when there’s paint on his hand. And being in these states of dysregulation, of having too much or not enough of the sensory input their bodies need to function optimally, can be very uncomfortable. It's important to understand that we all have our preferences, and they don't necessarily need to be "fixed". However, for children especially, we need to help them, and the adults around them, understand their preferences and how best to work WITH them. This takes time and patience. See more

22.01.2022 ATTENTION: PARENTS If you have a child with a device with access to and is using social media (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat), we highly recommend you k...now what social media challenges are going around. What is a social media challenge? It is an action or behaviour with varying degrees of difficulty or risk involved, filmed and shared online. Some are harmless and fun and include dancing or jokes, but some are far more serious and harmful. Some social media challenges have resulted in severe illness, injury, and even death to the child and sometimes other involved parties. In recent talks with students, we asked about what social media challenges they had heard of lately, and we were surprised at some of the new ones going around. They mentioned the Vortex challenge (basically skulling a bottle or can of liquid that is usually water but can be coke, red bull, alcohol after spinning it and creating a vortex/whirlpool within the bottle), which has been around for about 6 -12 months. The Benadryl challenge involves skulling or drinking a bottle of Benadryl cough syrup (can cause serious illness or sickness) all at once. The students also mentioned a few new challenges which we had not heard of until last week. The detergent challenge involves eating or drinking washing powder, dishwashing liquid, or a dishwashing tablet and could potentially poison or make a young person very, very sick. One challenge which made us very worried to hear was the 'paperclip or coin' challenge which involves pulling or sliding a power chord plug partway out of the socket (with the prongs still inserted but a gap in between the plug and the wall) and sliding a coin or paperclip onto the plugs metal prongs. The result would potentially cause the plug to explode but also could electrocute or seriously harm the child. Most parents think my child knows better and would not do something that stupid. BUT. Let us tell you something about the genuine problems that our kids are facing with online and social media. - Be as involved in your child's online life as you are in their offline life...to a child, it is just life. s for some adults too), and sometimes they need to feel validated, accepted, and liked is stronger than the knowledge that something is risky or dangerous. Our advice around your kid's online lives and keeping them safe: - Be as involved in your child's online life as you are in their offline life...to a child it is just life. - Be interested and ask questions. - Get to know what your kids are into and what pages or genres pop up in their "for you" pages. - Sit with them and get them to show you who and what they follow. - Watch some of the videos with them and find out what they like about it. - Talk to them about the risks of social media challenges and maybe what their friends are doing? - Restrict and monitor how much time they spend online. - Be across what they are following and ask them how it makes them feel. - Depending on their age, work with them to regularly clean up their feeds and remove accounts that make them feel bad about themselves. - Engage and involve them in activities and hobbies that do not require a device or phone. - Start as young as possible and be open to discuss everything with them, not just challenges. If you have seen or heard of any recent social media challenges, please share them with us. For more information check out www.safeonsocialtoolkit.com

19.01.2022 Trials of a controversial cashless welfare program will be extended for another two years, after the Federal Government failed to win support to make the scheme permanent in some communities. The controversial program quarantines 80 per cent of an individual's welfare payments on a card that cannot be used to purchase alcohol or gambling products.

03.01.2022 Blue-tongue lizards are out and about at this time of year. They are commonly seen in suburban areas around pools and ponds or basking in patches of sunlight as... the warmth helps them digest their food. WIRES is often called to rescue and care for lizards that have been injured by lawnmowers or whipper snippers. Please remember to check the yard before you mow in case you have a resident lizard.

01.01.2022 The StaticWater Supply (SWS) program is aimed at identifying properties with sources of water supply such as dams, creeks or swimming pools that can be used for firefighting purposes. ln the event of a fire, the SWS sign and your water tank or backyard pool could save your home. The SWS program is used to identify the location of swimming pools and other water sources in areas of high bushfire risk. The backyard swimming pool provides an ideal emergency water supply for firef...ighters, using small portable pumps and hose lines, to protect your home and possessions. Your pool water will only be used as a last resort during major bushfires. The SWS sign is provided free. lf your house or property has a water source, such as a swimming pool, tank or dam, you can assist firefighters by prominently displaying a SWS plate at your property boundary so that it is readily visible from the road. Your voluntary inclusion in this program may assist the fire service to extinguish a fire should one occur in or near your home or a neighbour's home or property. To sign up to the SWS program, contact your local fire station. To find your nearest fire station enter your suburb or postcode on the find a fire station page. In the meantime, a makeshift sign will do the job - while waiting for the official one to arrive.
