23.01.2022 Strangely, I'm more excited by beeswax than by honey ... well perhaps its a tie. In any case, I'm becoming addicted to candle making (a relief from my sock knitting fetish which continues at a slower pace).

23.01.2022 H. and I very excited to see this clip of our new Warre hive filling with bees under the watchful eye of our mentor Ronnie from Natural Beekeeping Tasmania. They come to Mapali Farm along with our foundationless Langstroth hive this coming Monday. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HiW7XEnMAIA

15.01.2022 A selection of produce grown in our beautiful Lorinna valley

14.01.2022 We've had good rains and now a fine spring day with six new ducklings to splash in the puddles <3

14.01.2022 And then ... two weeks later came twin ram lambs, making a flock of five. The mother seemed unsettled after the double birth, the second born was small and weak and the placenta had not yet come. We waited a few hours, saw the mother accept and feed the first and leave the second alone in the paddock. By now, it was barely visible in the long grass and too weak to move beyond feebly lifting its head. Without its mother or some cow's colostrum within 12 hours, it would die. Wi...th it, we'd be bottle feeding for three months. What to do? Breaking the 'rules' but following instinct, we fed a 'dose' of about 100mls of cow's colostrum by bottle and watched it halfheartedly accept the teat, then actually swallow, then gulp. Eyes brightened, energy lifted and after a short rest, it struggled to its feet. He then wobbled over to the mother who seemed to register an intent to live and turned herself open for a feed. The dopey little one took about an hour to work out how to actually feed from the mother but finally we had success! Placenta delivered some 12 hours later and day two showed great improvement in all three. See more

12.01.2022 So the half dozen woody little raspberry cuttings given by a neighbour three years ago, transplanted with runners the next year by our wonderful WWOOFER Adele, producing about one punnet over last summer, have this year turned into a raspberry forest, producing a twice daily feast plus more for the freezer. Meanwhile we welcome a few blueberries ...

09.01.2022 So here is Fluffball at birth, then being greeted by goats Thistle and Lina, and a few weeks later having truly earned her name.

07.01.2022 The nectar flow has been so strong and the bees so busy that we were able to harvest our first frames of honey a year ahead of expected. The honey combs are lightly pressed and currently sit in a stainless steel strainer before being tapped off into glass jars. No heating and no spinning, just honey as the bees made it.

04.01.2022 So our bees have been with us for 3 weeks now and yesterday we opened the foundation-less Langstroth for the first time. It was dreamily good. They were so calm. We had added the second box when they were installed and it is now almost full of new wax and lots of new brood and uncapped honey. Feeling amazed ...

02.01.2022 Our first crop of certified organic and bio dynamic garlic stands tall and green in the field. It's starting to feel real.

02.01.2022 Our tiny flock of two (lawn-mowing) sheep has this month grown to three, with the birth of an auspicious ewe lamb, our first birth on farm, signalling (we hope) great fertility. Along with the curious goats, we watched the birth from under the shade of the oak and then, during the licking and cleaning process, the goats moved right in close to meet the newest farm member.
