25.01.2022 Earlier this year I was asked to present at the 2020 Building Physics Forum on issues with condensation & mould in roofs built to the Flame Zone detail in the Australian Bushfire Standard. Alas, my trip to Brisbane has morphed into an on-line event as has everything else in the world. The Building Physics Forum is the countries peak event at exploring the science that SHOULD guide the way we design & build in order to maximise comfort, health & efficiency. If you are in the ...building industry this is a great opportunity to learn or develop your knowledge about the hidden nuances of the trade we ply. I am really looking forward to presenting; but more so looking forward to learning from the other presenters & attendees questions. https://www.airah.org.au//BuildingPhys/2020_Speakers.aspx See more
23.01.2022 Castle of the keep goes 3D! Now we get to see some special Passive House stuff. To accommodate extra insulation and to prevent thermal bridging (heat flowing in and out through the structure of the building) we are using a double stud wall. In this case 2 x standard 75mm frames set 5mm apart has been the most effective and economical. #buildingdesign #architecture #buildingdesigner #sustainablehomes #sustainabledesign #solarpassivedesign #solarpassivehomes #solarpassivearchitecture #comfort #passivehouse #passivehousedesigner #certifiedpassivehousedesigner #healthyhomes

21.01.2022 Luckily we can now cook WITHOUT gas; using technology with the same benefits of instant high or low heat. And without the potential negative impacts on our health or the certain impacts on planetary health! https://theconversation.com/gas-cooking-is-associated-with-

19.01.2022 This is one of the strong reasons why reducing the use of energy is critical; smaller buildings with a focus on energy efficiency. If we continue to consume more, then with even 100% renewables we damage our planet and our own health. https://theconversation.com/renewable-energy-can-save-the-n
19.01.2022 Four days until I present at the Building Physics Forum! And as of last Friday I have a special announcement that will be good news for us all!

16.01.2022 Unfortunately this is as far as this project will get due to a change in my clients circumstances (good luck with the future folks). However it is an example of a Passive House project that was destined for Sydneys Inner West.
15.01.2022 Straw bale meets recycled timber meets air tight barrier. Where could it possibly fail!
15.01.2022 We have a winner! Castle of the Keep has met the Passive House standard for air tightness! At a mere 0.89 air changes per hour we have come in under the required 1 air change per hour for rebuilds. The average Australian home leaks to about 15 air changes per hour (that means you are heating or cooling the air inside 15 times every hour!). Photos show the red ‘blower door’ fan used to do the test, as well as the airtight layer being installed inside, and a progress shot outs...ide. Full credit goes to Beck & Andrew Keep, the owner builders that spent many hours installing & taping up the air tight layer. To achieve the standard in a rebuild is REALLY hard compared to a new build. Shout out as well to Dave Tooher and his team of carpenters. Passive House is the only method of assessment that actually tests the building to ensure you achieve what you set out to do. The mandatory tools in Australia (NATHERS or BASIX) fall well short of their aim, largely because there is no quality control. Thankfully in NSW Passive House is now accepted instead, so we are heading in the right direction. #healthyhomes #buildingdesign #architecture #buildingdesigner #sustainablehomes #sustainabledesign #solar passive design #solarpassivehomes #solarpassivearchitecture #comfort #passivehouse #passivehousedesigner #certifiedpassivehousedesigner #healthyhomes
14.01.2022 Ten years ago my solar installer told me solar panel installation would become the next ‘pink batts’ tragedy. It appears he was right. Don’t go for cheap systems; may sure you get an installer who really knows their stuff. Even the big installers are a risk ... https://theconversation.com/solar-panel-fire-season-is-all-
14.01.2022 Sometimes you are the bride, sometimes the bridesmaid. Thanks to the Judges for selecting this project as a finalist. The winner was amazing and well deserved!
14.01.2022 I think the volume home builders ARE setting out to deliberately mislead. Not only that but a 6 star NATHERS rating is almost useless at actually achieving comfort, health and efficiency. Interesting about the legislation quoted also; it appears most things we are sold probably breaches it. So why does nothing get done about it? https://theconversation.com/spruiking-the-stars-some-home-b

13.01.2022 Passive House social housing, schools etc; what a great way to boost the economy, make sustainable building mainstream and introduce equality into our society ... (ok so the Passive House is my addiction to the article). https://theconversation.com/why-the-focus-of-stimulus-plans
13.01.2022 Castle of the Keep. Exciting day with the windows arriving on site. And this is how you get a 180kg triple glazed window up stairs (with your heart in your mouth!)

13.01.2022 I have read quite a bit lately that basically says the only sustainable timber we have in Australia is plantation pine (that doesnt involve deforestation of native forest). It seems it is time to stop specifying anything but pine or products like bamboo ... https://theconversation.com/the-leadbeaters-possum-finally-

08.01.2022 Last year I was asked to present to the Penrith Heat and Homes Summit. Following on from Dr Josh Byrne was quite nerve racking (as you will no doubt pick!). 01.01.2022 Today at the office; after coming down to the NSW South Coast for a project we decided to stay a bit and help the local economy recover from Bushfires and COVID 19.
