13.01.2022 Bushfire and emergency planning, preparation, responses and recovery has always, and will continue to be, one of my strengths. Working with Ken Lay.

09.01.2022 My candidate statement: Mark Reeves has the knowledge, skills and experience as a two term councillor, mayor and deputy mayor. He has been an educator for 35 years and is the founding principal of The Alpine School. His vision is for East Gippsland is a thriving, safe and secure place to live, invest, raise a family, access ... education, retire and recreate. It will be a region that is economically strong, socially connected, environmentally sustainable and celebrates our indigenous culture. Mark, will ensure council is inclusive, responsive and financially responsible. He will provide stability and continuity to council to enable it to build on the successes of the past four years and grow the shire into the future. Mark believes that government should be almost invisible, that it’s working at its best when you hardly know it’s there. Services and facilities should function, be renewed, be reliable and be accessible. When we get it wrong, council will respond quickly and fix the mistake. Mark has a strong sense of social justice, the need to look after the most vulnerable people, kids, aged, disabled, and disadvantaged. Drought, fires and covid have pushed us to our limits. The shire will continue to offer relief and support. Mark will ensure rates are kept at or below CPI in the current rate-capped model. Green waste will remain free, and a kitchen-compost program will be introduced. Mark has proven ability to work with state and federal governments to secure grant funding for disaster recovery, roads and bridge construction and to ensure our essential assets are maintained. This includes sea walls, airports, boat ramps, libraries, roads and bridges and more. He will advocate to continue bushfire recovery hubs as emergency and disaster recovery centres for the future. Mark will ensure our shire thrives. See more

02.01.2022 Why are you standing for council? I have a vision that our Shire is the best place to live, work, invest, recreate, retire or raise a family. I will continue to ensure our places are safe and well planned for a challenging future. The past term has seen significant highlights in the council with record capital works spending meaning many old projects have finally been completed. This financial good work of the last council should not lose momentum and the improvements conti...nue. I have been an active advocate with state and federal governments to seek support for drought-affected East Gippsland and in the bushfire recovery period. Record grants have been received and will be put to excellent work. This will continue. In the Black Summer Fires I was not just a first responder in my local area of Orbost and Marlo, but advocated directly to state for all affected shire areas to receive immediate and emergency help. I have been an active voice to State government for the implementation of and support for Community Recovery Committees in the most impacted areas. I will continue to ensure Bushfire Recovery Victoria has a permanent role in fragile, volatile fire-affected shires like ours. As cities become less attractive places for many, shires like ours will have increased pressures to cater for Covid, drought or climate refugees. This will create many issues and opportunities for us in future. We need to be ready and willing to embrace the future. I will be there with the community facing this future. See more
