19.01.2022 WHAT'S A FOGO BIN? Everything you need to know about the future of Sunshine Coast waste Thank you to everyone who has already had their say on the proposal f...or a third bin, known as a FOGO bin. To make sure your feedback is captured as part of the official consultation fill in the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/H8PBD6G WHAT IS A FOGO BIN? It’s a food organics and garden organics collection bin which allows you to put all your food scraps and garden waste into the one green bin. WHAT’S THE COST? No additional cost to those households that currently have a garden waste bin. An additional amount similar to the current garden waste bin cost, which is $62.10 per annum, to households that do not currently have a garden waste bin. ALREADY GOT A THIRD BIN? Great That’s all you need. There is NO fourth bin. If the proposed FOGO bin goes ahead, your garden waste bin would transition to a FOGO bin so then it would be able to take your garden waste AND your food and organic waste. ..BUT YOU’VE GOT A COMPOST BIN. Awesome! So, a FOGO bin complements your compost system because you can use your kerbside organics bin for things you would avoid putting in your compost or worm farm, like dairy, meat, bones, bread, grains, citrus, and kitchen oils. EVEN dog and cat poo and waste. WHAT ABOUT THE SMELL? If it went ahead, the FOGO bin would be collected weekly and we think it’s unlikely that simply sorting waste differently, for example by placing food scraps into the organics bin instead of the landfill bin, will create additional odours. HOW OFTEN WOULD THE FOGO BIN BE COLLECTED? To be determined based on community feedback, if a change in bin service goes ahead, the proposal is to change the frequency: FOGO (green lid) bins collected weekly General waste (garbage) bins collected fortnightly Recycling (yellow lid) bins continue to be collected fortnightly. Here's the survey, tell us what you think: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/H8PBD6G

12.01.2022 2021 we are here and it starts with creative collaboration. This morning we visited the regen site we have worked on with @sunshinecoastcouncil at Edith Place ...Park in Coolum alongside Cynthia Croft. Cynthia is one of our Water Monitoring volunteers and also part of @coolumcoastcare and their VIP weeding groups working to protect the local Dunes and was very proactive in getting this area sorted. In amongst the rubbish and weeds there are some beautiful trees. The frogs and birds are singing sweetly and the local artist lent us his paint to touch up the vandalised sign. 2021 - Create, Collaborate, Community!

09.01.2022 Looking after the .03%. That is how little of the world's water is found in waterways, rivers and wetlands! This little boat is fitted with a scoop to have maximum impact in tight spaces. #catchmentcare #onwaterforwater #waterways

02.01.2022 Have you seen this small, white, airborne substance recently? These were dropped into our office by a concerned community member wanting to know what they are. ...They are actually LERPS! Lerps are sweet, waxy covers that plant lice larvae create from plant sap to protect themselves. Their gummy properties made them highly prized in the industrial sector prior to the modern age of plastics. Lerps were used in medicines, cosmetics, glue, paint, varnish, rubber, chewing gum, gramophones and golf balls. The tree most commonly affected are of course ..."gum" trees. Today lerps provide a food source for a variety of tree dwelling animals, including the Bell Miner which has an interesting way of "farming" lerps. The bird uses its tongue to lever the lerps off leaves without harming the bug underneath, which then goes on to secrete another starchy cover that the birds can eat later. But because Bell Miners are so effective at repelling other birds (which might eat the bugs as well as the lerp) the plant lice population can get out of hand in some areas and cause trees to sicken and die. Bell Miner populations tend to be higher in disturbed areas, so it's a good reminder of how modifying a habitat has flow on effects on the wider ecosystem. https://www.birdlife.org.au/australian-//exuding-abundance
