19.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE Friday, 3 April 2020 Maroondah Community Assist responding to community need in time of coronavirus... Local community information and support agencies are responding to calls for help from people who are suddenly without jobs and income due to the coronavirus. According to the Executive Officer of peak body Community Information & Support Victoria (CISVic), Kate Wheller: We are the entry point for a lot of people who are new to welfare and just dont know where to get assistance. CISVic member agencies assist people experiencing personal and financial difficulties by providing information, referral, advocacy and support. Emergency relief can include things like food, transport or chemist vouchers, food parcels, and referrals to other local services. Because our agencies are smaller and nimbler, they have been very quick to work out ways to safely deliver a local service that protects everyone, said Kate Wheller. Maroondah Community Assist has changed from a face-to-face service to over the phone. Assistance includes support and a listening ear, information about what local help is available, and material help with things like food, prescriptions, and phone cards. Vulnerable people who have self-isolated, can ring MCA and arrange for a carer or family member to pick up food parcels, etc on their behalf. Rhonda Dingley, President of Maroondah Community Assist said: Anyone experiencing difficult times should ring us and well talk through how we can help them. MCAs opening hours are 9:30am to 1pm on from Monday to Friday. People needing support or assistance can ring: 9725 7920. According to Kate Wheller: CISVic welcomes the announcement on Sunday of an additional $200 million for Financial Wellbeing & Capability programs, and is grateful for the very positive moves the government is making to ease financial hardship for all Australians during these unprecedented times. She said: Each year we have contact with around half a million Victorians. Maroondah Community Assist already supports around 2,000 individuals and families each year with emergency relief alone, and expect numbers to increase significantly in coming months. We hope to be able to increase our operating hours to accommodate this but are waiting for confirmation from federal government of emergency relief funding levels. For more information or for media comment please contact Kate Wheller, Executive Officer, Community Information & Support Victoria (CISVic) at [email protected], or phone 9672 2000 0407 670 125.
