23.01.2022 Throwback- a year ago today MATAVAI NZ CULTURAL EXCURSION We learnt about the Waitangi treaty in Waitangi, and Maori navigation, we experienced Nga Puhi (tribe) pride, stood on the grounds the treaty was signed, entered and watched a show in the whare tupuna at Waitangi, we were taught about the intricate carvings and the meaning behind the structure of the Whare. We gratefully learned how to navigate a waka, grateful because traditionally women are not supposed to row the ...waka, and according to protocol men do the talking during the welcoming powhiri ceremony however our co- director Maryjane was asked to say a few words addressing the chiefs and kuia of Oromahoe marae, we gifted the marae with a fine mat from Samoa and our chief Tuiloma thanked the marae and also spoke at Waitangi. We stayed at three different marae from northern Aoteroa, Mitimiti, Oromahoe, and Rotorua Whakarewarewa #pacifichistory #aotearoa #maoriculture #matavaipacificculturalarts #decolonise #teachingourkids #pacificpride See more

22.01.2022 Don’t confuse gracefulness for weakness. There was a time when the ideal Samoan (Polynesian) woman (featured in many legends and history) was a freedom fighter, army general, deity, warrior, merciful, tactical strategists and leader of liberations. *In Siva Samoa the fa’ataupati (clapping of hands together or onto the body) is a technique used to express strength, happiness, pride, skill, struggles..juxtaposed with graceful movements reenforces and highlights the many complexities and strengths of our women. #termfour #decolonise #pacificbrilliance #pacificculture #samoa #tonga #fiji #hawaii#png #tahiti #cookislands #pacificdance #identity

The research is funded by a COMPACT grant from Multicultural NSW and will investigate the way in which the Positive Peace Framework is implemented by five communities across Greater Western Sydney, and will contribute to understanding the processes by which social cohesion, cultural wellbeing and positive peace can be fostered in a multicultural society in a diverse, peaceful country like Australia, particularly through the agency of young people.
