14.01.2022 Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club HMAS Sydney Memorial Service (22 November 2020). The Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club has a special affinity with the HMAS Sydne...y which was sunk during World War II off the WA Coast with the loss of all lives. The members of Sydney used the surf club as part of its recreational facilities whilst it was in port and even built and presented a traditional reel which was used by the life saving fraternity for many years in their important work saving lives at the beaches. The club traditionally holds a memorial service for HMAS Sydney on or around the anniversary of the Ships’ sinking and again this year it engaged the services of the Drums and Pipes to add to the occasion. Piper Eamon Wilkinson is a member of both the Surf Club and the Drums and Pipes and the club was pleased to have the Drums and Pipes to support its service. The traditional wreath laying takes a slightly different approach than normal in that the wreath is handed to the Boat Captain and the boat crew heads away off the shore and the wreath is laid upon the waters, the resting place of HMAS Sydney.
