24.01.2022 Do you make additional superannuation contributions? Hurry to make your contributions in time to claim for 2020! The monies need to be received by your fund by 30 June. So for most people that would mean being paid by you by 26 June! You can’t claim contributions paid by your employer directly to your super fund from your before-tax income.(i.e salary sacrifice). You may however be able to claim a tax deduction for personal super contributions that you made to your super fu...nd from your after-tax income, for example, from your bank account directly to your superfund, up to $25,000. Before you can claim a deduction for your personal super contributions, you must have given your super fund a Notice of intent to claim a deduction for personal super contributions form and received an acknowledgement from your fund.

21.01.2022 Got a student loan? Remember to tell your employer whenever you start a new job! Just tick the relevant box when completing your tax file number declaration form. This will ensure your employer withholds enough tax to cover any compulsory repayments!

20.01.2022 If you have sold an asset during the 2020 year at a profit, you may have capital gains tax to pay. Review all your paperwork to ensure you have all purchase and sale information to best calculate the profit made. It’s important to note that the contract date is the crucial date when it comes to capital gains tax purposes, not the settlement date. Also, review your investments to see if you have any assets that could be carrying losses that you may be able to dispose of now, to help offset against any gains you have made.

20.01.2022 While we can lodge your 2020 tax return from 1 July 2020, the ATO will not begin processing them until 5 July and refunds will start issuing from 16 July 2020. Ensure all of your information is Tax Ready before preparing your return, and that you have included all relevant information. This will ensure there are no processing delays with the ATO.

12.01.2022 Still haven’t lodged your 2019 return? Keep in mind that if you or your spouse have not lodged your 2019 Income tax returns by 30 June 2020, and you were receiving Family Tax Benefit payments during the year, the FAO can actually reverse your entitlement to those payments and raise a debt for what you have been paid! Likewise, if you normally receive your FTB entitlements as a lump sum upon lodging your return, if not lodged by 30 June you will lose any entitlement to the lump sum payment. The FAO are very strict with these cut offs. Lodge today to ensure you keep and/or receive your payments!

09.01.2022 If you worked from home due to COVID-19 restrictions, be aware that the ATO are watching this year to make sure people are not still claiming work related expenses during this time. Examples are laundry, uniform, travel, etc. The ATO are expecting claims for these items to drop considerably as people were forced to work from home or not work at all.

07.01.2022 If you’ve received a government stimulus payment this financial year, do you know whether you need to include it in your tax return? Different payment types are... reported differently: JobKeeper payments if you’re an employee these will be included on your income statement as salary and wages or an allowance. JobSeeker payments need to be included in your tax return and will also be included on your Centrelink payment summary. Accessed super you don’t need to pay tax on COVID-19 early release of super amounts, so you don’t need to include this in your tax return. No need to manually fill this out, most info will be automatically included in your tax return by late July. The ATO are cracking down on such schemes and threatening fines and jail time! The early release of super was not introduced for this purpose and the ATO are aware of these double-dipping ploys!
