She's helped us come a long way from a migrant workers' roundtable event 2 years ago. ... What part of working with MELS do you find most fulfilling? Many of our clients tell us that they feel powerless, with their employers holding visa threats over their heads, and silencing their questions about underpayment. I find it very satisfying to get a result for these clients- not so much about the money, but the fairness of recovering what's theirs. How do you spend your time when you are not at work? I enjoy bike riding, and playing sea monsters and soccer with my kids. Reading books and drinking a lot of tea is easily my favourite thing to do.

What made you want to volunteer with MELS? MELS combines two of my favourite things- law and social justice. I was specifically interested in how it stands up for vulnerable people, especially in employment situations where there can be significant power imbalances. What do you do in your spare time? I am a law student, so I spend a lot of time doing readings. When I'm not doing that I like playing with my dogs, embroidery and reading books.

Make sure you have at least one point of contact for your employer e.g. full name, address, phone number or email. ... 2. Know how much and how you will be getting paid. Restaurant operators have been penalised for underpaying an employee on a temporary work visa more $150,000 through years of cash back arrangements, unpaid overtime, annual leave and minimum hourly rate.
