24.01.2022 CHAMPIONS OF MELS Introducing Sharmilla Sharmilla is a MELS steering committee member and an employment lawyer at Redfern Legal Centre. As part of the steering committee, she provides ongoing strategic guidance to try and help MELS operate efficiently in order to help end the exploitation of migrant workers. She's helped us come a long way from a migrant workers' roundtable event 2 years ago. ... What part of working with MELS do you find most fulfilling? Many of our clients tell us that they feel powerless, with their employers holding visa threats over their heads, and silencing their questions about underpayment. I find it very satisfying to get a result for these clients- not so much about the money, but the fairness of recovering what's theirs. How do you spend your time when you are not at work? I enjoy bike riding, and playing sea monsters and soccer with my kids. Reading books and drinking a lot of tea is easily my favourite thing to do.
