25.01.2022 The long-awaited accommodation support strategy has been released: A Safe Place, A Western Australian strategy to provide safe and stable accommodation, and sup...port to people experiencing mental health, alcohol and other drug issues 2020-2025. Mental wellbeing and having a safe place to call home are intrinsically connected. The release of the strategy is welcomed by WAAMH but we now need to see implementation of the plan and investment in a range of supported accommodation options to meet the diverse needs of individuals across the state. We hope to see these investments detailed in this years Budget, due in October. #Homeiswherethehealthis #MentalHealthstartshere Read more here: https://waamh.org.au//a-safe-place-mental-health-accommoda

First open meeting of the Lived Experience Co-design Community of Practice Tuesday 11th May 10am - 11.30am Increasingly, consumers, families and supporters are invited to be part of co-design processes with organisations and funders. But how do you know when it’s authentic co-design or simply friendlier consultation? In this first open session of the new Lived Experience Co-design Community of Practice, we’ll be having a look at what co-design is and what it’s not. ... Come along, learn, share, contribute and be part of this new community. The Lived Experience Co-design Community of Practice is a space where individuals, family members and supporters with experiences of mental health, alcohol and other drug use can come together in authentic, safe, equal and respectful relationship to learn, share, discover and grow for the purpose of strengthening and safeguarding the integrity of co-design processes and for the positive benefit of all concerned. The Lived Experience Co-design Community of Practice was the brainchild of participants in a series of Co-design Cafes which were held in Perth in July 2020. The WA Association for Mental Health, Well Rounded and Mental Health Matters 2 partnered to deliver the cafes and are involved in supporting the Community of Practice, which of course has been co-designed! 16.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS to Virginia Catterall - Winner of the 2020 Mental Illness Fellowship of WA Lived Experience Impact and Inspiration Award. (Photos to follow!) Virginia is a long-term member of the MHM2 Steering Group. We continue to appreciate Virginia for her willingness to candidly speak through her own lived experiences with mental distress, alcohol and other drug use and criminal justice involvement in order to create better outcomes for others navigating similar situati...ons and do so in a highly respectful and inclusive way. Also Virginia has project management skills par excellence which she volunteers to keep our range of projects on track and is very gracious in how she herds cats. (Speaking of cats, Virginia is a cat-lover - so a shout-out to Charlie here). Virginia is also a volunteer at our Families 4 Families WA groups and often provides a thought-provoking personal consumer perspective to the family-supporter discussions. Congratulations also to the other worthy Winners and Finalists of the Awards. More details can be found on WAAMH's Facebook page.

16.01.2022 Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. A time to remember loved ones lost to overdose & reduce stigma. And we'd like to shine a light on opioid overdose.... As many as three people a day die from opioid overdose in Australia, and while many people believe heroin is the main cause of opioid overdose, prescription opioids such as oxycontin and fentanyl contribute to around 70% of opioid overdose deaths in Australia. Naloxone is a life-saving medicine that reverses opioid overdose quickly. Free Naloxone is now available to anyone who is at risk of opioid overdose, as well as people who are likely to witness an opioid overdose. 275 lives were saved by Naloxone at WA non-medical community-based sites alone between 1 Dec 2019 and 30 June 2020. Visit mhc.wa.gov.au/naloxone for details of the Take-Home Naloxone Pilot and a list of places where free Naloxone is available without a prescription.

14.01.2022 Western Australias first Common Ground has found a home. Today I was joined by The University of Western Australia's Paul Flatau and Perth MP John Carey to ...announce that we have secured a site at the corner of Hill and Wellington streets, in central Perth. The Common Ground model offers safe, affordable and permanent housing to people who are experiencing chronic homelessness, sleeping rough or at risk of becoming homeless. But it is not just a building - a range of supports will be built in to the facility, to give residents the best possible chance of maintaining their tenancy and getting their lives back on track. These supports are the cornerstone of the McGowan Governments shift towards a Housing First approach to addressing homelessness in the community. Services will be located on site for people who may need employment assistance, have mental health issues or require medical referrals and expertise. By supporting residents to build independence and improve their lives, this project will go a long way to breaking the cycle of homelessness in the CBD. The evidence from Common Grounds in other cities tells us that it will also significantly reduce the amount of services required, delivering savings to taxpayers. This State Government is investing $35 million in two Common Grounds. We are doing what previous governments did not - record new investment in housing and homelessness services, and committing to doing things differently to get people off the streets for good.

14.01.2022 Tonight we helped a out 65 people with beanies, jackets and sleeping bags. It felt really busy tonight and everyone was in good spirits and wanting to chat mor...e than anything. We want to thank Homelessness; We Care - Perth Western Australia for allowing us to slot in next to them on Tuesday evenings and for feeding us some yummy food tonight. Those experiencing homelessness also had access to the shower bus, street doctor and orange sky laundry. It was raining when we where driving over there and stopped long enough to allow all the service providers tonight to be able to help those experiencing homelessness. Big thank you to everyone who knits the beanies for us, they have been a massive hit.

14.01.2022 What a great conversation tonight. Large group on F4FWA talking about what keeps us STRONG even in difficult times. Some contributors to staying strong include: non-judgmental, empathic people; peer support and learning from others' wisdom and experiences; safe, supportive, affordable housing; learning about mental distress outside of a bio-medical explanation; collective wisdom; understanding more about trauma and how it informs alcohol and other drug use and mental health challenges. Great convo - thanks peeps :0

08.01.2022 Creating more beds without appropriately planned and funded pathways to and from those beds is not a good use of taxpayer money, nor will it solve the current problems in the mental health system. We need a choice of services in place in the community to support people so that they don't have to become so unwell that they need a hospital bed. That way there will be sufficient beds available for those who need them and will help others to get the assistance they need earlier.

06.01.2022 How Do You Share A Lived Experience Story? Our journeys as individuals, family members or supporters in the mental health and/or alcohol and other drug areas are often painful and difficult. But they can also bring new learning and understanding. Sometimes it helps to share the experience or the learning with someone else (and sometimes we are required or invited to in formal appointments). That can involve some careful choices. ... How do we: - Choose when to share? - Decide who to share with? - Select what aspects of the experience to share? - Maintain boundaries for our own privacy and that of others? - Take our listener into account - are they a friend, a family member, a clinician or someone else? - Make sure we feel okay after sharing? Join us for a Families 4 Families Zoom discussion on July 14th (7pm - 8pm WA) about sharing lived experience with others. Please bring your learnings, your questions and your thoughts. RSVPs required by email to [email protected] or by text to 0413 861 049. Zoom login will be sent on rsvp.
