25.01.2022 Sleep and migraine. One huge, but often forgotten factor, with managing migraine is to achieve regular sleep. Not too little and not too much. Discover how on the blog on the website https://www.migrainenaturopath.com.au/bl/sleep-and-migraine

22.01.2022 As a migraine sufferer, I find I can't really drink alcohol regularly, especially as I get older. But, sometimes - just sometimes, I would like to be able to enjoy a glass or two of wine without the accompanying anxiety that I may have a migraine tomorrow. These wine wands purify wine by removing histamines and sulfites - substances which may contribute to wine headaches (and that nasal congestion that you sometimes get after drinking red wine).... And they are kinda pretty too. Here is the link if anyone is interested in ordering one or finding out how they work: https://bit.ly/30ELjb2

21.01.2022 Anyone who experiences migraines (or is close to someone that does) knows that migraine is so much more than a headache. We all know about nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to light, noise and smell but there are many, many other migraine symptoms which are often overlooked. Migraine.com asked their Facebook community for their strangest migraine symptoms (read about it over on my blog at migrainenaturopath.com.au). What strange symptoms do you notice?... https://www.migrainenaturopath.com.au//weird-migraine-symp

20.01.2022 One of the first things we need to look at when conquering migraine long-term is rebound headache. Ironically, the medications used to treat migraine, while helpful at first, can make migraine attacks worse and more frequent in the long run. Some of the most commonly used acute migraine medications - such as painkillers and triptans - are often the culprits in causing rebound headaches. ... How do you know if you are experiencing rebound headaches? If you notice an increase in migraine attacks and use of medication over time, this could be a sign that you may be experiencing rebound headaches. The good news is that it is possible to reduce your reliance on these medications. As someone who has experience living with migraine, I've been there and bought the t-shirt! Reach out to me for a consultation if you need qualified support with natural medicine and nutrition to help reduce migraine attacks. www.migrainenaturopath.com.au Josie x

19.01.2022 Caffeine and migraine has a complicated relationship. Some migraineurs find it helps, others find it makes it worse. An approach I find works for many people is to avoid caffeine on most days. This stabilises your response to caffeine. If you feel a migraine coming on, then you can have one coffee to see if that will stop the migraine developing further.... The bottom line is that using caffeine to ward off a migraine generally works best if you don't have a lot of coffee or caffeine every day. #migrainerelief #migrainewarrior

17.01.2022 I used to think that suffering a migraine attack at work was the worst. Until I became a mum and realised that looking after a small child while under the influence of a bad migraine day made me wish I was back at work. Here are some ways towards more shush, and less noise, when you are caring for little ones while you have a migraine. Make being quiet a game.... Playing ninjas. Very quiet ninjas. Colouring in. Quiet caterpillars in the dark. Rub mum's head. Build a busy bag of quiet games, puzzles, colouring in and craft. Sorting beads and buttons. Talking book app. Play dough. See more

09.01.2022 Brain Fog: this is a common symptom for women and can indicate a number of hormonal imbalances, from thyroid issues, cortisol, blood sugar and perimenopause. For busy women with lots to juggle, it can feel so frustrating to feel slowed down by your own brain. Brain fog is also a major symptom for migraine...which in turn - in some cases - can be related to the above hormone imbalances.... I love to help my clients work out what is going on through taking a thorough case history and functional testing. And then, once we know a bit more about what is going on, together we take a look at strategies to help balance hormones through good nutrition, herbal medicine, supplements and lifestyle interventions.

05.01.2022 I have something a little controversial to say. Medication is not the only effective way to manage migraine. I get why some might think that medication is the only answer for migraine. Everyone and their mother will tell you about the newest migraine drug.... And many medications can make a positive difference to those who suffer migraine. But, you can manage migraine without relying on just medication. In fact, in some cases, the most used migraine drugs make migraine worse. Scratch beneath the surface and you will find migraineurs who manage their migraine with evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle approaches. Basically, by taking very good care of themselves. There is a catch though, everyone is different, and you need to take the time to find out what works for you. And sometimes, like any change, it isn't easy. You can't undo years of migraines or chronic migraine overnight. When it comes to migraine, there is simply no silver bullet or long term cure. But there is hope and you can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine. This is where I can support you. Through helping you understand more about your migraine story, and with the help of functional testing and evidence-based nutritional and supplement advice. Sometimes you still might need to take your migraine medications. And that is OK. But if we can reduce your reliance on drugs, then that is a good thing - right? And I know what is possible, because I have helped myself go from chronic (almost daily) migraine to the more occasional migraine. My role is not to cure or fix everything. What I can do though is empower clients with knowledge and guidance to manage their own health. The type of information I cover over several appointments is: An introduction to my migraine circle of self care How a migraine develops and strategies to manage migraines at each step Why your hormones play a role, and how to balance hormones Managing hydration and electrolytes for migraine prevention What to do when you feel a migraine coming on Environmental causes and triggers The importance of nutrition in preventing migraine, and a simple eating protocol to reduce your migraines Recipes and meal plans Natural pain management A guide to give to family and friends to help them support you when you have a migraine Supplements for migraines which have been clinically proven to help How movement and gentle exercise can help migraine How to build a team of health professionals for a holistic approach to migraine management where you are in control! As always, if migraines are a problem for you, and you would like help to create your own migraine prevention plan, do feel free to book in for your first appointment. Appointments are available online for residents of Australia and New Zealand. I’d love to help. Head over to the website to learn more: https://www.migrainenaturopath.com.au/ Josie Carin x

05.01.2022 I'm pretty much on top of my migraine attacks now, but yesterday, I overdid my morning exercise a little, strained my neck and a few hours later could feel a migraine coming on. So, I stirred half a teaspoon of powdered ginger in hot water, and sipped it slowly over the next hour or so. Halfway through the cup, I could feel my migraine attack start to ease, and 24 hours later - still no migraine. Yes! So, why might ginger work to stop a migraine? More research needs to be do...ne, but there is some clinical and other evidence to show that it can help in milder migraine attacks. The spice is a strong anti-inflammatory, and also an anti-histamine. Both inflammation and histamine are implicated in some migraine forms - so it makes sense that ginger, if taken early enough, can calm down a mild migraine attack. And of course, ginger is also well known for nausea - another common feature of migraine. The best thing is that ginger is inexpensive and safe. If you haven't already, keep ground ginger on hand and give it a try next time you feel a migraine attack coming on. I have a HUGE list of ways to help stop a migraine in the early stages, which I share with clients. Reach out if you would like naturopathic migraine support.
