25.01.2022 On 1 December, the Governor-General will present the insignia of the Victoria Cross for Australia to the family of Ordinary Seaman Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean. The hi...storic ceremony at Government House in Canberra will be streamed live on this page. In the lead up, we will be sharing content about Teddy’s story. In this piece, Dr Victor ‘Ray’ Leonard, the last surviving member of HMAS Armidale shares his recollections of his shipmate who he was, how he approached life on board Armidale and interacted with his shipmates. For a young man of 18, his voice was not soft and sweet it was firm and strong. He didn’t speak quietly he was not lacking in confidence he was a go getter, an outgoing person. 24.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1945, the Emperor of Japan announced Japans surrender to the Allies, ending the Second World War. The announcement was met with an outpouring of ...relief and celebrations across Australia and Allied nations, with the date becoming known as Victory in the Pacific Day. Today, we remember all the Australians who served during this time, and those who continued to serve until the final surrender of the Second World War in October 1945. #LestWeForget : Australian War Memorial

23.01.2022 #OTD: National Military Working Dog Day Today we pause to remember the life and service of our unsung four-legged heroes, the Military Working Dogs of the ADF.... The 7th of June every year is National Military Working Dog day, a day where we can reflect on the sacrifice of Australias Military Working Dogs (MWD). These brave canines have served faithfully alongside Australian personnel since 1943, and many of them paid the ultimate price to save their fellow Australians. Originally employed by the RAAF to provide security for airfields, use of MWD was expanded to the Army and Navy in 1977. However, units of the Australian Army were using MWD well before then during the Korean War as well as the Malayan Emergency and Borneo. Since then, MWD have been deployed on operations domestically and overseas. In addition to airfield defence, MWD are now primarily employed as explosive detection dogs (EDD) or with the special forces as special operations military working dogs (SOMWD). Unfortunately, I was unable to locate an exact number of MWD who were killed since 1943, however, since 2007 10 MWD have been killed on operations in Afghanistan. We remember today all MWD who served, and pay tribute to those who never returned. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you appreciate this content, please considering 'liking' the page and sharing this post so others can learn about Australia's fascinating military history! 19.01.2022 #BREAKING: Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced World War II hero Edward Teddy Sheean should be posthumously awarded the nations highest military hono...ur, the Victoria Cross. Wounded, his ship sinking beneath him, Sheean is recorded as returning to his anti-aircraft gun on the HMAS Armidale to fire at enemy aircraft that were strafing his shipmates as they floundered in the water, despite the order having been given to abandon ship. A survivor from the HMAS Armidale, Jack Duckworth, told ABC war correspondent Peter Hemery soon after they had returned from their ordeal, that he saw Teddy Sheean do the unthinkable. "As she went down, Ted Sheean kept one of his guns firing, and went down with the ship," Mr Duckworth said. "He got a row of machine-gun bullets right across the chest, but went back to his gun, strapped himself in and kept on firing as she went below the water." Another survivor, Leading Seaman Leigh Bool, said the hero of the battle was a young ordinary seaman, Edward Sheean, not long at sea, who refused to leave the ship. "Sheean had no chance of escape. Strapped to his anti-aircraft gun, he blazed away till the last. One of the Jap bombers, hit by his gun, staggered away trailing smoke, just skimming the surface until it crashed with a mighty splash about a quarter mile away." The news comes after years of failed attempts to have the Tasmanian Seaman awarded the honour for his heroic actions off the coast of what is now Timor Leste in 1942. Last year, Scott Morrison intervened and appointed an expert panel, led by former Defence Minister Brendan Nelson, to re-examine the case. Mr Nelson says that panel has found new evidence to support the awarding of a VC in this case.

18.01.2022 The RSL Claremont Sub-Branch is holding a Remembrance Day commemoration at the Claremont Showgrounds this Wednesday, 11 November, beginning at 10.30am for an 11...am service. As mentioned in the article in this week’s POST Newspapers, the Claremont Showgrounds is an iconic venue, used during WWI and WWII for the training and billeting of 10th Light Horse Regiment AIF soldiers, and others. The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia and the Federal Member for Curtin, Celia Hammond MP, have both kindly supported the event, and we are fortunate to have a young bugler from Churchlands Senior High School who will play the Last Post and Reveille. The Blacksmiths' Association of Western Australia will exhibit the 'Forged by Fire’ program, Military Art Program will have hand-painted farm gates on display, and there will also be a short presentation on 10 LHR by Group Captain/Dr G M 'Mike' Galvin RFD (retired). Bound to be very interesting! This will be followed by a community barbeque to which all are welcome! Please contact President David Thomas on 0418 448 933 or [email protected] if you would like to attend, and we'll see you there! #remembranceday2020 Town of Claremont #lestweforget2020 #lestweforget

12.01.2022 Namaste! Tune in on Monday evening for free yoga from the gallery #Repost Sorry Thanks I Love You The Ken Done Gallery... YOGA WITH KEN DONE As prolific as he is distinguished, Sydney-based artist Ken Done is nothing short of an Australian cultural icon. In 2019 he created a series of paintings inspired by both Australia's coral reefs and the summer's bushfires with the intention of eventually hanging them in his harbourside gallery in The Rocks in 2020. Following the outbreak of COVID-19 though, the gallery was promptly shut. This means all of Ken's newest work remains largely undiscovered by critics, fans and the world at large. Tomorrow, that will change. In the spirit of reconnecting Sydney-siders with the places they're missing the most, tomorrow we're hosting our free Monday yoga class on Instagram TV from inside the @kendonegallery. Join us on IGTV tomorrow Monday 11 May at 6pm for a free 45 minute class led by expert teacher @mischaism and soak up Ken Done's seascapes at the same time. Our yoga classes are designed especially to treat your cabin fever and improve your mental health, and are taught in such a way so that even absolute beginners and their labradors will understand what to do. So rustle up a yoga mat (or a towel will do), click through to follow us on Instagram, and set an alarm for 5.55pm tomorrow for a free injection of art and exercise-induced joy and smugness. Happy Mother's Day.

12.01.2022 2nd September 2008 will be a day forever etched in my mind as the day that I stood and fought side by side with some of the bravest and most selfless men that I... have ever known. For Australia, it is a day marked as the worst battle since Vietnam when it happened, and the day the actions of Mark Donaldson would earn him the Victorian Cross, the first awarded since Vietnam. In a combined US / Australian operation, we fought against an estimated 200 Taliban fighters intent on wiping us off the face of the earth when our patrol was ambushed as we made our way through a valley in Khaz Uruzgan. Shot in the hip with a ricochet and fragged by multiple RPGs, my wounds paled in comparison to the men who were laid out on stretchers and filling the available seats inside the HUMVEEs. It is also the day that my Explosive Detection Dog (EDD) Sarbi went missing for 14 months after frag from one of the RPGs severed the lead attaching her to my body armour. During the battle, SFC Gregory Rodriguez (Rod), a father of three, a husband and a fellow Dog Handler was shot and killed. Rod is missed by all that knew him, RIP mate. Thinking of all the guys that were with me on the ground that day and the medical staff that patched us up when we got back to base.

09.01.2022 BREAKING: The PM has backflipped Teddy is getting the VC he deserves. Huge, huge victory for the thousands of people who've refused to let this go. This is th...e right result, and it's only happened because you guys made it happen. Somewhere, Teddy's looking down at the ways you guys fought for him and smiling. I reckon he'd be recognising a little of himself in you too. This is a victory for everyone who's got a little bit they owe to this 18-year-old kid from Tassie. A kid who gave his life for his country, and had to wait 78 years for his country to give him a proper thanks.

04.01.2022 Smoky was found in a foxhole in New Guinea in Feb 1944. The American thought she must have been a Japanese soldier's dog, but when he took her to a POW camp, th...ey found out she didn't understand commands in Japanese of English. The soldier sold Smoky to Cpl. William Wynne of Cleveland OH for 2 dollars Australian. Over the next two years Wynne carried Smoky in his backpack, fought in the jungles of Rock Island and New Guinea, flew 12 air/sea rescue, She survived 150 air raids on New Guinea and made it through a typhoon at Okinawa, made a combat jump in Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, in a parachute made for her. She would warn G.I's of incoming artillery and was dubbed the "angel from a foxhole." Early in retaking the Philippines combat engineers were setting up a telegraph line to an airfield. The joints collapsed filling them in with sand. Cpl. Wynne knew that Smoky could climb through the pipe with a new line and that is what she did. Smoky's work saved approximately 250 ground crewmen from having to move around and keep operational 40 fighters and reconnaissance planes, while a construction detail dug up the taxiway, placing the men and the planes in danger from enemy bombings. What would have been a dangerous three-day digging task to place the wire was instead completed in minutes. In her down time she preformed tricks with the Special Services to improve the moral of the troops and visited hospitals in Australia and Korea. Visiting with the sick and wounded, she became the first recorded "therapy dog". After the war she became a sensation back int the states, had a live TV show, and often visited Veterans hospitals. Smoky's work as a therapy dog continued for 12 years. Wynne had Smokey 14 years before she passed away. He buried her in a 30 caliber ammo box in Rocky River Reservation, Ohio. Smoky, the smallest war hero weighing in at 4 lbs even and standing 7 inches tall. Pictures copyrighted by William A. Wynne (1996) and used by permission. 02.01.2022 Today is Vietnam Veterans Day, a day to remember and honour the almost 60,000 Australians who served during the Vietnam War. The day marks the anniversary of t...he Battle of Long Tan in 1966 when 17 Australians were killed in action and another 25 were wounded when facing a force of some 2000 enemy troops. It is an opportunity to reflect on our service men and womens sacrifice both during the Vietnam War and in the years following. We remember and honour the memory of those no longer with us and are forever grateful for the service of all. Lest we Forget.

02.01.2022 Today was an amazing day full of emotion as we joined the commemorative service for the Blackhawk Accident - 20 year anniversary at Swanbourne Barracks. Over th...e past few months MAPA has been busy with the commissioning of an artwork to mark the event. The artwork painted by our own program artist (and aviation specialist artist) Noel Barnes - Aviation & Military Artist, reflects on the 15 from SAS and 3 from 5th Aviation Regiment that lost their lives but also remembers those who survived this accident. The painting was unveiled today after the service and was extremely well received by family members of the fallen and the survivors, in attendance at the service today. It will later be presented to SASR but until then it will be exhibited at the SAS Assocation House WA. This beautiful work is framed in Jarrah from an old window sill from the SAS Sergeant's mess, making the reflective work much more significant. In the frame on the left are etched the names of all those who lost their lives and on the right are etched the names of all those who survived this accident. Today we were blessed and honoured to talk with 4 of the survivors from the Blackhawk Accident having them sign just 4 "SPECIAL" limited edition prints, one of which will be gifted to 5 Aviation Regiment. The Military Art Program has 100 limited edition unframed prints of this 20th anniversary commemorative work available for sale at $250.00 each plus $10 postage. Once they are gone there will be no reprints. The money raised from the sale of the prints will go equally to the SAS Association WA Branch and MAPA for further art classes for our veterans. If you would like a print please email us at [email protected] for a payment form. We are extremely proud of the work, to gift something back to both the SASR and 5th Aviation Regiment, to commemorate the fallen and remember the survivors, the frames for these works made by an SAS soldier using salvaged Jarrah, inlay etching by Jarrah Medal Box, input on the concept from SAS family and survivors and the stunning artwork concept and created by our own well known WA artist, Noel Barnes. Thank you to everyone involved in the project. RSL WA SAS Historical Foundation
