17.01.2022 All of us experience emotion: sadness, joy, fear, disgust, anger, shame, and many more. But the ways that we relate to and regulate our emotions vary from perso...n to person. Our underlying beliefs about emotions, and the strategies we use to regulate our emotions, influence whether our emotions escalate, get stuck, or are free to come and go. Our relationship with our emotions as adults is strongly influenced by the way that our caregivers related to our emotions when we were younger. For example, those whose caregivers dismissed, mocked, or rejected their emotions are likely to inhibit their emotions in adulthood, have difficulty regulating strong emotion, and downplay the importance of emotional intimacy in relationships, while those whose caregivers were sensitively responsive and accepting of a wide range of emotional expressions in childhood are more likely to be comfortable expressing a wide range of emotions in relationships and have effective strategies for regulating emotion in adulthood. Learning to tolerate and regulate emotion effectively is essential for emotional wellbeing and healthy adult relationships. While our early attachment relationships shape our development, including our ability to regulate our emotions, later experiences can reshape and redirect our ongoing development across the lifespan. In other words, our attachment history is not destiny. As adults, we can bring awareness to our relationship with emotions in order to identify both the healthy and unhealthy ways we respond to our feelings, and where it’s needed, learn to develop more effective ways of regulating our emotion.
