25.01.2022 Put down the device and walk in nature. Heres why.

24.01.2022 For most of us living busy lives, many small steps repeated often is a good way to embed mindfulness.

24.01.2022 Nature can be a great support the cultivation of inner qualities. The last couple of months have had many days where the weather has been still and bright. Tuning in to the external presence of those qualities can support a connection with the internal presence of those qualities.

24.01.2022 Humans are capable from very young ages of putting the interests of others ahead of themselves. It is a quality that Australians have shown in responding to the COVID-19 situation.

23.01.2022 The thing about racism, sexism, etc is that it can feel invisible if you sit in the group that has historically benefited from the discriminatory beliefs, practices and structures. The reflection in this article encourages us to recognise the unacknowledged benefits that come from belonging to the dominant group. Not always easy when you arent feeling particularly powerful - but there nonetheless.

23.01.2022 This article contains an interesting way to explore the mindfulness principle of "acceptance" - not always easy to get a handle on.

23.01.2022 Useful to keep in mind that how mindfulness is operationalised will change the experience of it.

22.01.2022 Not an app user myself, but know that they can be a real support for mindfulness.

22.01.2022 This documentary by an Australian journalist includes interviews with some of the leading researchers into mindfulness. It is interesting to see what is possible on a low budget. Free to view as part of the virtual launch before 3 June.

21.01.2022 It's been a while since I've pushed back at the way that "mindfulness" has been appropriated by all sorts of people, peddling all sorts of things with no idea what mindfulness is. Mindfulness isn't about feeling comfortable and safe (like when you snuggle under the blankets on a cold day). Mindfulness is the capacity to know what you are experiencing in the present moment and relate to it with care and interest and without reactivity. While it is easy to relate to feeling com...fortable and safe without reactivity, you might find that you get hijacked by the flip side - attachment and wanting. Can you be with your experience - good, bad or indifferent - without aversion or craving? Mindfulness involves clear recognition of one's experience - without aversion and craving. This is what enables us to make choices that are free from emotional reactivity. See more

21.01.2022 Letting in the care of others can be so much more challenging than offering it to others. It is a valuable practice to cultivate this capacity - notice all the obstacles and blocks to receiving care and investigate. Experiment with carefully opening to and being appreciative of the care available.

20.01.2022 From the article: "meta-analysis confirmed that mindfulness training was associated with increases in prosocial outcomes, especially increases in compassionate behavior and reductions in behaviors related to prejudice or retaliation." YAY! What a great secondary impact.

20.01.2022 We are all more than the most recent (or worst) stupid, thoughtless, mean thing we have done. Pause - Recognise that it was stupid, thoughtless, mean - Work out how to make a different choice next time - Make amends - Get on with living.

20.01.2022 Put down the device and walk in nature. Here's why.

19.01.2022 Some simple ideas that have been around for generations but are worth spreading.

18.01.2022 Mindfulness was traditionally always coupled with ethical living. Remembering our interconnection with the other inhabitants of the planet and the planet itself helps to ensure that mindfulness doesn't get co-opted by consumer capitalism. From the article - important reminders... "Mindfulness practices that reinforce a notion of self as separate from the rest of nature and society can risk missing many benefits of traditional mindfulness practice. Similarly, by focusing exclusively on developing a heightened awareness of self, mindfulness practitioners can fail to see the consequences of their behaviours."

16.01.2022 NOTE: This isnt a Mind and Movement event however, Kathryn Choules is one of the facilitators. Our first experiment in offering the Work That Reconnects in an online format seemed to work well so were running another program. Interested in a program that supports you to engage emotionally, conceptually and actively in the challenges of our times? And best of all we join with others also interested in trying to make sense of how to meet these challenges.

15.01.2022 Mindfulness is now a big part of AFL.

14.01.2022 Unpleasant emotions tend to take us over and so naturally we don't want them. It is not easy to acknowledge unpleasant emotions as part of the stuff of life and to observe them with interest and care. AND it is incredibly valuable to learn to do so, gently turning towards what we desperately want to resist. Here are some guided practices to build up the muscle of "turning towards" the unwanted.

14.01.2022 Fascinating research discussed here. Such good evidence that focusing beyond ourselves and appreciating the gifts we receive has many benefits beyond our own well-being. (As always - it is not ultimately helpful to use gratitude as a method to bypass/avoid challenging emotions. Gratitude can support us to work with them.)

14.01.2022 What could be more important than having police officers able to remain aware and non-reactive in the various situations they encounter? The reduction in unconscious bias that is associated with mindfulness is so important. And not just for police officers. For all of us. We have all been conditioned within a racist culture and it takes intention and effort and perseverance to start undoing the harmful effects from unquestioned assumptions and automatic behaviours.

13.01.2022 An interesting story... physical isolation leading to greater connection than ever.

12.01.2022 The pause of the shutdown provided an opportunity, like the pause of meditation, of reconnected with what is important. The challenge is to remember!

11.01.2022 This program for refugees in Israel is reported on in the documentary My Year of Living Mindfully. It is a good example of how mindfulness can support those who have been traumatised by systemic oppression cope with the daily consequences of trauma more effectively.

11.01.2022 T'would be a grand outcome if we learn these lessons.

10.01.2022 Worth reminding ourselves about...

09.01.2022 Lots to consider here. The difference between having goals and being attached to achieving the goals is a good place to start. Having goals can motivate. But if we are postponing contentment until the goals are reached, then we could spend a lot of life being discontent.

08.01.2022 I still remember my first experience of mindful walking in the rice fields of Thailand 15 years ago. Id been a meditator for many years but had never engaged in mindful walking. The experience blew my mind. Walking with my attention on one sense at a time taught me a lot about the mind and attention, focus and field of awareness

08.01.2022 Our women's retreat is on this weekend. It was booked out in September but today we've had someone cancel for health reasons. So, if you know that you need a nourishing break this might be your opportunity... (Because it is such late notice - we are offering the early bird rate.)

07.01.2022 A new page of mindfulness activities and information for children.

06.01.2022 This is a long article but fascinating.

05.01.2022 If you like the science of mindfulness, here is an interesting study. It indicates that people who have greater acceptance of the present moment, have less reactivity and lower brain activity - they dont get caught by the emotions but are able to stay present and ready for what comes next. Thats a useful capacity.

04.01.2022 Taking time away from technology from 7 July til 16 August... off on a meditation retreat.

04.01.2022 There is a little quiz in this article that was interesting to review. The questions/answers gave me food for thought. What are the obstacles to me doing a little more yoga during the week? What are the conditions that help it to eventuate?

03.01.2022 This reminds me of a practice that I had some years ago of looking for opportunities to apologise. Apologising was something that I avoided as it was too unpleasant to sit with the mini (or larger) bursts of shame that accompanied acknowledging when I had behaved badly, thoughtlessly, recklessly etc. Although I still dont relish acknowledging my various foibles, there have been benefits from turning apologising into practice. There is additional freedom and ease in facing the times I behave unskilfully rather than trying to hide from it (or trying to hide it). Uncoupling the behaviour from the person (me!) supports me to take responsibility for my actions. Without a doubt, still a work in progress.

03.01.2022 Implicit bias is what fuels racism, sexism, age-ism, ablism, religious hatred etc etc. How good that practising mindfulness has this side effect! YAY!

02.01.2022 A neat initiative for supporting kids to gain some self-awareness and mastery.

02.01.2022 The first half of the article discusses circadian rhythms and research into sleep. The second half looks at how mindfulness can be harnessed to support better sleep.

01.01.2022 Twould be a grand outcome if we learn these lessons.
