18.01.2022 Part 2 of 2 Elimination of the drone from the hive.

17.01.2022 Come Autumn the worker bees start preparing for hive for winter. In order to do this they eliminate any non essentials in the hive. Unfortunately for the drones they provide no value to the hive during winter. In actual fact they are a burden that will deplete honey supplies and are there for eliminated. We were able to capture the elimination in progress see part 1 of 2 Be sure to watch part 2, as you will see the tag teaming by the worker bees. It is fascinating watching them in action

09.01.2022 You may (or maybe not) be wondering why we have had so many swarms. Let me tell you why.... When we inspect our hives and see Queen cups /peanuts we have the option to eliminate the peanuts, bar one (incase the Queen is unwell) but we choose not to. Why? Well for a few reasons... ... 1 - we can split the hive into a Nucleus box (which we did) 2 - More bees in nature is always good thing for everyone 3 - If your hive is strong loosing some bees is not an issue. If a Queen lays brood in every cell on one langstrom full depth frame 7400 bees will emerge 6 weeks later. Although normally only 70% of the frame is filled so that would be approximately 5180 bees per frame. In the hive that has swarmed the most, we had 12 brood frames which equates to approximately to 62,180 new bees at 70% full or potentially 88,800 if all cells were full of brood being born every 6 weeks. If each swarm contained 5000 bees, we have only lost 35,000 bees. We personally don't like squishing Queen cells to stop a swarm, plus once the bees decide to swarm they will just create a new Queen to swarm with. Personally I prefer to split the hive, however, this can be tricky when 3 Queen cups / peanuts are on one frame very close together.
