08.01.2022 Lack of proper maintenance makes boating expensive. The myths: BOAT stands for Bring On Another Thousand and You only have 2 happy days with your boat - when you buy it /when you sell it, are just happening because the boats are not looked after. Boaters that follow manufacturer schedule of maintenance are happy all the days in between! Be proactive an keep an eye on the condition of your engine. You must stay on top of corrosion and if you see any rust developing on your engine that must to be fixed. Images below are from a failed exhaust manifold from a Mercruiser sterndrive. Exhaust system on sterndrivies/inboard engines must be disassembled and inspected every 2 years in salt water use. In this case the engine was beyond repair.

06.01.2022 "... and, most important, you have to take the propeller off regularly to check if there is any fishing line on the prop-shaft. Because if you do get a fishing line on the prop-shaft it WILL damage the oil seal, the oil will get out and the water will get in. And we all know that water does not lubricate as good as oil. Just joking, water doesnt lubricate AT ALL!" I say this phrase at the end of every service I do on outboards and stern-drives. But in reality very few do take their prop out between the services to check for fishing lines. In the pictures below is pure salt water coming out a SEIZED gearbox. The fishing line you see attached on the prop-shaft did a "good" job!
