21.01.2022 Wed just like to give a huge shoutout to this fellow! The climbing stoke is high with him!! If you dont know Angus Taylor , hes had quite the crazy story over the last few years. While on a climbing trip through the US about two and a half years ago he had a climbing accident shattering his lower leg. What followed was two and a half years of surgeries and extended hospital stays. I lost count how many times he told me that the doctors have said that theyll most likel...y have to amputate my leg. It seemed every few months something would take a turn for the worse and the threat of losing his leg was brought up, but somehow he got through it with it still attached! A long period in the external scaffolding frame which had its challenges and humours all at the same time. Then the rehab. Then finally last week he posted this selfie. What a bloody awesome photo and caption that was to see. Returning to climbing. Starting from scratch. But with so much stoke. Like a kid in a candy store. Good on you Gus! #Repost @applep1e Returning to climbing in somewhat of a normal capacity has been challenging, with the constant and unavoidable comparison to a past self, there has been some moments where it was hard to escape being self critical. But the genuine reconnection with community, the small moments of fight followed by bouts of laughter, getting lost in movement, and lung fulls of cool air has brought back a feeling that has well and truly conquered the former. While fitness is creeping back, I find that less than fitness its ones want, and how bad that want is that ultimately pushes us through the burn, the head game, the doubt, and through our own walls. The want was hard to find after all this time... but its there now, the joy, the music, the try hard, the meaning in the arbitrary. 19.01.2022 No discussion, no consultation. Today the Victorian Government continued on their single focused, own agenda and closed arguably one of the best climbing crags in the world. Some round table discussion would have been the least they could do. But the outdoor and climbing world has to just take whats given apparently. This is a huge loss to Australias climbing culture. It seems like the Vic Gov has no regard to the way how some people find their higher experience in this... world. For many of us, word of a group called Grampians Wimmera Reconciliation Network (GWRN) being involved in climbing access in the Grampians National Park came as a bit of a surprise. 11.01.2022 Vale Jurgen Zingler It is with much sadness that we report the passing of Jurgen Zingler, outdoor enthusiast, businessman, visionary, animal lover, and gentleman. Born in Berlin in 1936, Jurgen developed a great love for the outdoors and climbing which he pursued in Germany, Austria and the European Alps. He was encouraged by his father to study business and commerce and he focused on learning to speak English and exporting. Through this he initially came to Australia on a... ten pound immigration ticket. He returned to Germany after two years but obviously something about the place caught his imagination because he returned here for good not long after. Jurgen was the founding manager of Mountain Equipment in 1968 when they opened a their first store in Falcon Street in Crows Nest, Sydney, and soon after bought the business. He went on to own and run Mountain Equipment through the 70s, 80s and early 90s and, as a founder of Intertrek, was instrumental in importing technical outdoor gear hitherto unavailable. He was a man who got involved in the outdoor industry just at the birth of technical gear. Climbing wasnt just done in hiking boots and with a hemp rope anymore. Specialist gear was popping up in Europe, the UK and the USA and Jurgen worked hard to get it to the Australian market. Brands such as La Sportiva were imported and distributed from his home in western Sydney. He was also known as a mentor to many others in the industry and played a valuable role in making the industry what it is here today. Literally, we at Mountain Equipment and many of the brands we carry are here because of Jurgen. Mountain Equipment would like to offer its most sincere condolences to Jurgens wife Barbara and their family. Our company and indeed the technical outdoor industry in Australia owe a lot to him.
