21.01.2022 Proposed Demolition of two Federation Homes at 690 and 692 Beaufort Street Mt Lawley. The Mount Lawley Society and our local community oppose the demolition of 690 and 692 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley. These heritage properties are in excellent condition and have been part of our streetscape and character of Beaufort Street since 1903, when it was built for the Schruth family. No 692 was built in 1915 for the Cohen family.... Both families are part of Perth and Mt Lawley history and both homes are excellent examples of the Federation style. Even though No 692 has been ‘updated’ at some stage, the Federation bones are still very much intact. The properties are in a Heritage Protection Area in Mount Lawley and the Beaufort Street Plan which aims to protect and conserve quality heritage and character properties. This includes commercial properties which fall under the Beaufort Street Local Development Plan a statutory document for the local area. The Heritage Protection Design Guidelines Policy 3.1 calls for protection and retention of quality significant character heritage homes in the area dating back pre 1950s. The proposed applications do not meet the LDP objectives or the Heritage Protection Guidelines. Please go to https://www.stirling.wa.gov.au//request-to-save-heritage-h to stop this destruction of our history. Also, contact your Lawley Ward Councillors and voice your concerns: [email protected], [email protected]

19.01.2022 Anzac Day 2021 Third Avenue Mt Lawley residents gather for Driveway Dawn Service Once again, because of a local lockdown, people who live in the regions of Perth and Peel were able to take part in their own Driveway Anzac Dawn remembrance, which was so well received in 2020.... Families who live around 98 Third Avenue Mount Lawley went a little further and organised their own community-run ‘service’. At 6.00am on Anzac Day, about 15 socially distancing Third Avenue residents gathered near Mount Lawley Primary School. A wreath that was donated by the Mount Lawley Society was on display, and was later laid at the Mt Lawley War Memorial in Queens Crescent. Hazel Butorac read the Recessional Ode, Kim Shackles read The Guns Were Silent, Barrie Baker played the Reveille, the recessional music For Those in Peril on the Sea, The Last Post and Finlandia all on the alto recorder. Just to top off the moment, a kookaburra sang immediately after the last note was played.

19.01.2022 Have your say in the proposed Inglewood Character Protection Guidelines The City of Stirling has commenced advertising for community responses to proposed changes to planning controls in the Inglewood Heritage Protection Area. The community is encouraged to consider the documents in this link and submit your feedback to Council. The advertised changes will have an impact on the Inglewood Character Retention Guidelines.... Key changes in the Guidelines include: defining ‘Character Street’ identifies parts of the suburb where different controls will apply introducing different levels of control for different parts of a lot in order to allow design flexibility while preserving the character of the area, different controls are recommended for different parts of a lot development facing laneways design flexibility is recommended for these lots, but development will still have to reference the character of the area solar panels it is recommended these be allowed facing the street, without the need for approval. You are able to provide comment on the Guidelines from Monday 7 June 2021 until Monday 28 June 2021. A community drop-in session will also be held at the Inglewood Community Centre on Saturday 12 June 2021 9.30am12.30pm. This session will give members of the community the opportunity to ask the City questions about the policy. For more information and to view the draft policy or to make a submission, please visit the City’s YOUR SAY page. https://www.stirling.wa.gov.au//inglewood-character-retent The closing date for submissions by our community is 28 June 2021.

19.01.2022 ENCOURAGE CITY OF VINCENT TO SAVE A SMALL PIECE OF GREENERY AND UPGRADE IT TO A WELL-USED POCKET PARK There is a small piece of greenery at No 10 Monmouth Street Mt Lawley, which the City of Vincent is thinking about selling. We disagree and do not support this thinking.... The City states that it is 'vacant'. It isn't. It is designated as 'recreational' and 'public open space'. As a community group, we suggest the Council put the community first and upgrade this space to become a ‘pocket park’, similar to the well-used pocket park in Forrest Street Mount Lawley. (see image) In support of the retention of this land as public open space, we point out the following: This land was purchased by the City of Perth (now City of Vincent) in the 1960s for recreational purposes this should still be a priority. According to the Vincent Greening Plan, three of the objectives are: o Increasing Tree Canopy o Enhancing habitat and Promoting Biodiversity o Greening Enlarging and Enhancing Public Open Spaces By replacing the trees that were removed by Council or damaged by storm (see photos), the City would be helping to meet these objectives. The City of Vincent has been at the forefront of providing the community with much needed small fun, green and relaxing spaces, encouraging residents to be a part of that community. Examples are the Mary Street Piazza, Hyde Street Park in Forrest Street Mt Lawley and the Oxford Street Reserve in Leederville (see photos). We therefore strongly urge the City of Vincent to retain the reserve in Monmouth Street and, furthermore, ask that it be upgraded to the standard of some of the City’s other ‘pocket parks’ which add to the friendly and welcoming vibe in this inner city suburb.

10.01.2022 The City of Stirling has a planning meeting this Tuesday 18 May (tomorrow), where they will be voting to put the Inglewood Design Guidelines’ new framework out for advertising to the public. Click on link below to download the Agenda for 18 May meeting: https://www.stirling.wa.gov.au//counci/minutes-and-agendas ... It is important that we ensure all members, not just Inglewood members, are aware of this upcoming community engagement and can comment. Of note is that the guidelines will be distinct for Inglewood. The benefit is that new guidelines can address the development and community concerns of the Inglewood residents’ suburb. Ideally, it would be great to see Lawley Ward Councillors commence this work for Mount Lawley and Menora too as the Department of Planning currently looks upon the Heritage Guidelines as dated and possibly not relevant. I encourage all members to review the information and provide comment to Council. Please also feel free to share your views on our Facebook page and by emailing our Committee at [email protected]

08.01.2022 Huge Community Support to save these two heritage homes in Beaufort Street We have been overwhelmed, but not surprised, by the great support we have had from the local community - in Mount Lawley and from people in other areas who visit. We also acknowledge Councillor Migdale for her support on this important issue.... The online petition has now closed. Article in the recent Eastern Reporter. https://www.perthnow.com.au//heritage-group-petitions-to-s

08.01.2022 We as a community group are doing everything we can to save these two 100+-year-old iconic heritage homes in Mt Lawley. Please read our Media Statement on our website: http://www.mountlawleysociety.org.au/news

07.01.2022 POSSIBLE CHANGES TO HERITAGE PROTECTION IN INGLEWOOD In the City of Stirling's own Heritage Management Strategy it says "Heritage plays a pivotal role in understanding where we have come from, the way we live and the traditions we hold dear. Heritage is a finite resource; once lost it is gone forever."... The suburbs of Mt Lawley, Inglewood and Menora are heritage protected because of a lot of hard work by the community and the City of Stirling in the development of the Heritage Protection Area Guidelines. This could now change. Inglewood residents need to have a say before 9 November. The MLS is interested to hear from our members and the residents of Inglewood. Do you want these heritage guidelines altered? We are not against appropriate development but we DO definitely support heritage protection, our beautiful streetscapes, and importantly, maintaining our tree canopy. Many streets in Inglewood are far more intact than Mt Lawley think Sexton Road, Normanby Road, Crawford Road and all the Avenues. The City of Stirling is wanting to establish community attitudes on revisiting the planning controls that apply to the area and which are outlined in the Inglewood Character Retention Guidelines. This is where you can have your say about what happens in your community. 05.01.2022 DO YOU WANT THE CHARACTER PROTECTION GUIDELINES CHANGED FOR INGLEWOOD The Mount Lawley Society would be interested in your thoughts on this initiative. The City of Stirling is wanting to establish community attitudes on revisiting the planning controls that apply to the area and which are outlined in the Inglewood Character Retention Guidel...ines. 03.01.2022 MLS Sundowner and AGM 2020 Finally, after nine months of no events or catching up with our members, the MLS was able to hold our annual Sundowner followed by the 2020 AGM. This year, just for a change, we met at the Mt Lawley Golf Club, which was lovely.... After a lot of catchup chatter and a few drinks and nibbles, we settled down to listen to Simon Millman MLS, Member for Mt Lawley, who told us a bit of the story of ECU moving to the CBD, but mainly enlightened us with what is happening to Mt Lawley Senior High School and how it will affect future students and the surrounding neighbourhood. Now that the decision for ECU to leave Mt Lawley is a definite, we hope that the students and the neighbourhood can still benefit from what they might leave behind. The MLS supports the desire to invest in local arts and culture in our community. Thank you, Simon, for sharing your thoughts. Next, was Gerard Foley who is the Senior Archivist at WA State Records, who told us (with some really interesting drawings) of the new RetroMaps which we can all access to find out what our property looked like (or didn’t look like) historically. It was wonderful to hone down on properties and see where their horse stables and windmills were back in the early 1900s. If you haven’t found this wonderful site, here it is. Go search https://mapping.sro.wa.gov.au/#/ The AGM followed and even though we still haven’t filled the Secretary’s position, we thank some of the current committee for re-nominating and welcome two new committee members: Our office bearers and committee are: President: Tracey King Vice President: Mark Hodge Secretary: yet to be filled Treasurer: Pina Caffarelli Committee: Rita Tognini, Christina Gustavson and our two new committee members, Julie Harrison and Fiona Henfrey Patron: Barrie Baker
