24.01.2022 Welcome to Mental Health Week, I read in the paper last week that the Sydney Northern Beaches are reeling from a spate of 44 suicides and that crisis meetings are being held to help stop people from killing themselves. The area from Manly to Palm Beach has lost 44 people to suicide this year, 11 of whom were under the age of 18 and the balance were middle-aged men. The R U OK? programme has just launched with the aim to always ask someone if they are ok and do something about... it if you think someone is not OK. Much of my passion is around fertility and mental health. I have some theories, which I'd like to share with you today. I believe there are multiple factors affecting the higher suicide rates in people, but I believe one of them is the form of folate we are getting without even knowing it. I know this is controversial, so don't crucify me. I know there is NO research to support this, however with my involvement in fertility, I believe that the fortification of foods with folic acid is affecting our folate pathway. The objective of this pathway is to create active folate, but if you are getting high doses of folic acid, research does show that the enzyme that’s supposed to shunt our folate down the active pathway gets slowed or even inhibited. That can be the difference between us getting enough folate to support our mental health and not. I would love to present at schools to parents because I think we need to teach parents what they should be doing to help protect their kids. I also think we should be teaching adults how to also get the right amount of folate. So if you are reading this and want to know some easy steps to take to get the folate pathway unblocked, here they are: Avoid all sources of folic acid. This includes all breakfast cereals fortified with folic acid, all commercial bread (which by law has to be fortified with folic acid), and all packet foods that say folate. Introduce leafy green vegetables into the diet. These do not contain folic acid, but active folate. Make sure you are getting enough Vitamin B12. This means eating meat. Without B12, you cannot use your folate Avoid as many toxins in the environment as you can. Deal with anything that could be blocking your folate uptake ie: gut issues, infections, candida, heavy metals, mould exposure and the rest. We need to pass the word to as many people as possible. I will be presenting a webinar on Wednesday 15 October called 'Protection and Prevention of Mental Health Issues'. Sign up here to join. https://cledowsky.clickfunnels.com/webinar-registration1601 If you believe your school would benefit from this presentation, please email me at [email protected] and I would be happy to present this information. We have got to stop doing the same things and expect different outcomes. A sobering thought, I know, but let’s make a difference. 24.01.2022 Hi and welcome to Lupus and Autoimmune Disease Awareness! This week, we're highlighting Lupus Awareness Month an autoimmune disease. Lupus is an inflammatory disease caused when the body’s own immune system attacks its own tissues. ... This is typical of all autoimmune diseases. Interestingly there is an association between MTHFR polymorphisms and autoimmune disease. This connection is most probably due to the fact that methylfolate is required to make SAMe and without enough SAMe to control things, the immune system goes awry. There are many autoimmune diseases, of which Lupus is just one. By far and away the most commonly seen in our practice is autoimmune thyroiditis where the tissue being attacked is the thyroid gland. This causes a reduction of thyroid hormones and slowing of metabolic rate. In some of our patients, they achieve complete remission of autoimmune disease by addressing methylation disturbances. Another key factor in autoimmune disease is exposure to gluten. Dr Alessandro Fasano has shown in his research that gluten increases zonulin in the gut, causes leaky gut and helps the progression of autoimmune disease. Our gut function is key to a healthy immune system. We also know that dysbiotic bacteria like klebsiella can also predispose someone to autoimmune disease. The spotlight this month is on Lupus which is a complex and lifelong condition. While there is no cure for lupus, there are nutrients and lifestyle changes that can help manage flare-ups and side effects and if methylation is improved, we can also manage to put the autoimmune disease into ‘remission’. Lupus tends to be characterised by periods of exacerbated symptoms, balanced with periods of better health and low disease activity. Both lupus and MTHFR cause elevated homocysteine levels and studies have shown up to 25% of those with MTHFR TT and CC genotypes also have systemic lupus. Symptoms of lupus are varied and can include a variety of seemingly commonplace health changes such as: Hair loss Fatigue Fever Kidney problems Pulmonary (lung) issues Swollen joints Recurrent dry mouth and eyes Thyroid issues Changes in gastrointestinal habits and health If you are experiencing continued illness with any of the above symptoms and no clear diagnosis, speak with your practitioner to complete an autoimmune markup. This is particularly important if you have an MTHFR polymorphism. Have a great week, Carolyn #lupus #autoimmune #mthfr https://mthfrgenesupport.com/

19.01.2022 Speech Pathology Week Over the last few weeks, Ive seen quite a few children who have had stuttering issues. The stuttering often started when they were about 18 months to 2 years and often followed a vaccination or illness. Given this week is Speech Pathology week, its important that we recognise that stuttering may be related to biochemical imbalances and often its a high glutamate to GABA issue. ... Around 1 in every 100 Australians develop a #stammer or #stutter. Most commonly a stutter appears in children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. Often the cause may be an illness, anxiety, toxins and/or post vaccination. If you are navigating the challenges associated with a stutter in your child and looking for ways to best support them, understanding potential contributors may help. There are new studies indicating that glutamate excess and low GABA can cause stuttering in children. Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a naturally occurring amino acid found in your brain that works as a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger to the rest of your body. GABA is essential to# speech. It helps us create space between words, without it speech runs on and is slurred. Without it, we also struggle to comprehend language and conversation and feel sleepy all the time. For a child with an imbalance, speaking is like mentally wading through quicksand, unable to find the words or find a way to speak them clearly. There are numerous reasons that GABA and glutamate can become unbalanced and there are ways to investigate and counteract this imbalance. Ultimately, if you have concerns around your childs speech and are struggling to find answers. Speak to your practitioner about the possibility of #glutamate excess and low #GABA and they can support you in both testing and treatment as required. Always seek advice if you are concerned about your childs development. Have a great week Carolyn https://mthfrsupport.com.au/resources/ #speechpathology

15.01.2022 Teen Suicide Attempts are hard to Anticipate Many suicide factors are well known. Mental illnesses can increase risk, as can chronic illness and access to lethal means. The problem is that those risk factors capture huge numbers of people, few of whom are in imminent danger. A new US study, Mobile Assessment for the Prediction of Suicide (MAPS), is testing whether streams of information from mobile devices can help answer a question that has long confounded scientists and cl...inicians: How do you predict when someone is at imminent risk of attempting suicide? The 13- to 18-year-olds have agreed, with their parents' support, to something that would make many adolescents cringe: an around-the-clock recording of their digital lives. For 6 months, an app will capture every detail and nuance that a doctor's questionnaire cannot: their text messages and social media posts, their tone of voice in phone calls and facial expression in selfies, the music they stream, how much they move around, how much time they spend at home. Most of these young people have recently attempted suicide or are having suicidal thoughts. All have been diagnosed with a mental illness such as depression. 13.01.2022 Are You Oxygen Deficient? Theres nothing quite so calming or satisfying as a deep breath of fresh air. Oxygen plays a critical role in human survival and the health of our bodies - we cannot live without it. Oxygen fuels our cells and is a basic building block for survival. It contributes to new cell creation, supports healthy immune function and even eye health. So how do you know if you are oxygen deficient? There are some tell-tale symptoms that indicate your cells are no...t getting the oxygen saturation they need to function. These can include: - Muscle aches and pains - Headaches - An upset or acidic stomach - Poor digestion - Fatigue - Respiratory distress or bronchial issues - Repeat infections or unexplained illness can also be linked to oxygen deficiency. Oxygen supports our immune systems ability to kill bacteria and mount a response to viral infections. What Causes Oxygen Deficiency? There can be many reasons for oxygen deficiency also known as hypoxemia. Stress leading to short shallow breaths, anemia, heart conditions, lung conditions (including scarring), sleep apnoea and some pain medications. For those with MTHFR polymorphisms, oxygen deficiency is already a risk due to the prevalence of anemia as a component of MTHFR. This is due to anemia causing a lack of hemoglobin which is a carrier of oxygen to our cells. There are ways to improve your oxygenation. The following are some of the best and simplest techniques for getting oxygen into your cells. Controlled breathing or diaphragmatic breathing not only calms you down but encourages a full oxygen exchange. Pushing out carbon dioxide and allowing better absorption of oxygen. Mediation and yoga. These practices encourage slowed deeper breathing. Over time, you can even improve your lung capacity. Being more mindful of how we breathe can mean better oxygenation. Exercise. Staying fit and healthy through exercise is one of the best ways to improve oxygenation. Being out of shape causes poor oxygenation. Aim to exercise at least three times a week. Stay hydrated. Water contains oxygen and can improve the oxygen levels in your blood. Check your iron levels. When we have sufficient iron, our bodies are more effective at carrying oxygen. Oxygen binds to the iron in our blood so it is effectively carried to our cells and tissues. If you have concerns that you may be oxygen-deficient speak with your practitioner r. It is always best to ensure there is no underlying condition and to discuss treatment options. Have a great week. Carolyn https://mthfrgenesupport.com/ #oxygen #oxygendefecient #MTHFR

Studies suggest that they cut down the chances of both transmitting and catching the coronavirus, and might reduce the severity of an infection by lessening the dose of the virus. 05.01.2022 MTHFR and STROKE This weeks focus is on the relationship between MTHFR and stroke. Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase Deficiency (MTHFR) causes increased amino acids levels in the blood (homocysteine). Elevated homocysteine levels have been linked to a higher risk of ischemic stroke, thrombotic and cardiovascular diseases. ... For those with MTHFR, their bodies cannot regulate the levels of homocysteine placing them at increased risk. This is particularly relevant to those with MTHFR C677T homozygous. Independent studies have shown that the odds of those with MTHFR experiencing a stroke versus the control group was 22.29 higher (95% CI 4.8998.8).indicating that MTHFR (especially the C677T mutation) is strongly associated with arterial stroke. These studies also showed that this risk factor is influenced by other genetic and environmental factors such as race, gender and living conditions. Normally, homocysteine is recycled by our bodies, for the most efficient recycling the MTHFR enzyme is needed. Essential vitamins B12, B6, trimethylglycine and folate are also needed for this recycling to occur. If you have an MTHFR polymorphism, there are steps that can be taken to lower your homocysteine levels. Ensure that your cofactors to reduce homocysteine are at good levels ie: folate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 and trimethylglycine. A diet high in leafy greens, and legumes, as well as vitamin supplements can help. It is important to note that a lowering of these levels does not necessarily equate to a reduced risk of stroke or other complications. It is important for everyone with an MTHFR polymorphism to regularly check B Vitamins and homocysteine levels. If you are unsure and have not had a check for some time, speak to your practitioner. Have a great week, Carolyn #mthfr #vitaminB #genes #stroke

04.01.2022 FOCUS - SPEECH PATHOLOGY The aim of this study was to investigate the neuronal basis of stuttering, specifically looking at neurotransmitters N-acetyl Aspartate (NAA) and an excess of Glutamate and Glutamine. Findings confirm this close relationship and researchers believe that understanding changes in neurotransmitter levels may add useful information to the cause of stuttering, to monitor disease progression and patients response to the therapy in a more objective manner....
