Project Sprouts aims to support parents, upskill teachers and identify children needing early intervention support. To read more about this project visit https://bit.ly/3m3J36a.

16.01.2022 The Art of Resilience Here are some of the winning entries - more to be posted soon! (Read the story in tomorrow's edition of The Parkes Phoenix!)... Winner Under 13: Poetry - Parkes Remember When? by Charlotte Baird Let us try to remember This time last September When all was quiet and calm. Then all of a sudden, the drought was upon us, The dry dust and sand Swept out through all the land. Soon the water ran out And nothing came out of the spout. Then came the disease Which no one was pleased, With such might It came to us overnight. As we had the man Without a plan While he sat And ate his bat. He got us into this mess Which has been our biggest test It started off really small, With no one worried at all, Because we had other things to dred. It was said to be the worst fires of all Nothing could stop it, Nobody could But nobody here was misunderstood. It was something that cost us tonnes, While Australia lost all its funds And even still today Some families have a price to pay, It was truly devastating in every way. Then the trumpet sounded, As no more fires were founded But call the paramedic Cause here comes the pandemic. As more people became sick This disease spread real quick. There was nothing we could do, Except wait the day through. Of what we once thought was our town We slowly descended into lockdown. While we were all longing for the past, Every day was worse than the last As our colony found a new way to bloom Soon everything was over ZOOM. Now ‘cause of COVID-19 We are now stuck in quarantine. Soon everyone started to stock up their food We were all in a panicked mood. All the toilet paper ran out on the shelves, While people only cared about themselves But alcohol and liquor Ran out even quicker. When our turn came, It caused everyone so much pain. We tried to push through it as best we could As together we stood. Nothing and no one will ever been the same As we continue to play this game. Soon one day it will just STOP... And just like that we’ll be back on top.

09.01.2022 Senior students from local schools have spent time learning about the effects of alcohol, drugs, and distractions on driving. Trundle and Tullamore central scho...ols and Parkes Christian school have been involved. They have participated in training on a driving simulator provided by the Rotary Club of Young in collaboration with Parkes Rotary and Neighbourhood Central. We take students in pairs and they experience two training modules on the simulator said Frank Lincoln of Young Rotary. With the ‘impaired driving’ module a participant first drives for about 5 minutes to experience normal driving conditions. Then they stop, the simulator screens blur a little, and delays are inserted into braking and steering responses. The participant drives again for about 5 minutes and the difference between normal and impaired driving is compared by means of a statistical report. The experience provides a powerful demonstration of the effects of drugs and alcohol on driving ability. It’s an experience you should never try to provide ‘for real’ with real drugs or real alcohol in a real vehicle on a real road. Distraction is demonstrated by asking candidates to read text messages and carry out simple mental tasks while driving. They experience how difficult it is to maintain control when distracted. said Frank Neighbourhood Central and the Rotary Club of Parkes have formed a partnership to pursue purchasing a simulator to be based in Parkes but available to schools within a radius of say 100km from here says the Secretary of the Rotary Club of Parkes, Ken Engsmyr. Trials at local schools with the Young simulator are helping us to determine the demand for a locally based simulator. There is little doubt about the need for simulator training to compliment other safe driving programs for learner and newly licenced drivers: road fatalities for young drivers make it clear that more stills needs to be done to improve their safety on our roads. A local simulator will also be available for programs like seniors driving tests and providing upgrade training for people that for some reason have been disqualified. Feedback about the impaired driving experience from a student: Driving under the influence is not only illegal, it’s very difficult. Point made!

05.01.2022 Originally known as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November and marks the signing of the peace agreement between Germany and the Allies that ended the Great War of 1914-1918. The Second World War began just 21 years later. Almost a million Australians served during that conflict lasted close to six years. Armistice Day was then renamed Remembrance Day. Now Remembrance Day is a day to remember and honour all Australians who have served.
