25.01.2022 Nutrition science is confusing. One study says coffee is good for us, another says it's no good for us. I'm sure you're thinking... "why so much conflicting info?" just tell me what to do" "please make it clear and simple?... There's lots of competing theories and sometimes the same study is interpreted in different ways. Then there's the funding of studies by 'interested parties'. Bottom line, nutrition science is in its infancy. All scientific disciplines begin with confusion and backflips. We'll get better and better at performing nutrition studies and the science will become clearer. We're yet to see the best studies being published. In 2013, the Australian Dietary Guidelines were released. Some 55,000 journal articles were reviewed and synthesised by an independent working group. Since then the science has moved along. The Australian Government has announced another review of the evidence which is awesome! Can't wait to see what they come up with. No doubt the review will be bigger and better! https://www.health.gov.au//review-of-the-australian-dietar

25.01.2022 Iso street farmers market #contacts . . Fresh homegrown fruit and veggies. Supporting local farmers, catching up with the neighbours, staying 1.5m apart of course. Batch cooking planned for the arvo. .... . COVID Everybody seems to be posting their iso workouts. What about cooking shots? So many of my patients don’t cook because they’re time poor. Great opportunity to get in the kitchen. Get the kids involved too #entertainingathome @ Fremantle, Western Australia See more

25.01.2022 Does your food talk to you? .

18.01.2022 Thank you @citystirlingwa for inviting me in to talk to staff across two locations about cardiovascular disease prevention and management. Good to see some familiar faces from previous talks, to hear about the dietary changes they have made and the results they’re getting. . . Some key presentation points: Most Australians know that improving their diet, exercise or weight helps prevent cardiovascular disease, however, many struggle to implement these lifestyle changes.... We’re learning more and more about non-cholesterol risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as insufficient vitamin D, high blood glucose, low vitamin K, stress, low omega 3, excess oestrogen and low free testosterone to name a couple. Stick to no more than 350g of red meat per week and choose fish, legumes, eggs and lean chicken in preference to unprocessed red Not enough evidence to recommend full fat over reduced fat products, or reduced fat over full fat products for the general population. . . Some feedback from one participant: . . I find your sessions particularly engaging, not just from the point of view of delivering some important and life-changing information, but also in your delivery, which I find is put together in a way that conveys importance and urgency but doesn’t send the attendees running for cover and heading for the door. Well done. See more

09.01.2022 Great post by @garyvee, easily translatable to diet. . So many of my patients are always trying to be PERFECT...until they’re not perfect, for whatever reason, then they sometimes throw in the healthy eating towel for the day/week/month. . No no no. Don’t give up just because you had a cheese toastie or a burger! Doesn’t mean the day is ruined. ... . Instead of feeling all down on yourself, guilty or whatever else, switch your mindset to one of curiosity. Treat the meal as an opportunity to learn and grow instead. Why did you eat that burger? Did it taste nice? How did it make you feel afterwards? Did you feel energized? Do you want to feel energized? Did you order it without chips this time because you’re trying to make small improvements? When was the last time you enjoyed a burger guilt-free? Reflect instead of negative self talk. . Has anyone tried this? It’s liberating!!! See more

08.01.2022 Had a chat with @louisemomber on @9newsperth about a new observational study conducted by Edith Cowan Uni on veggie consumption and heart health. . . The authors found that consumption of just 45g or 1/4- 1/2 cup of cruciferous veggies (eg broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts) per day reduced build up of fatty calcium deposits on the subjects aorta by 46% compared to those who ate little or no cruciferous veggies! .... . Calcification, or build-up of fatty calcium deposits on our arteries and veins is a major risk factor for Australia biggest killer...cardiovascular disease. When only 7% of Aussies eat our recommended serves of veggies, I think it’s time to up all veggies...and make sure you include some cruciferous one too. Well done to the 684 ladies that participated in the study. See more
