25.01.2022 Last week I visited the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology with Ali King - Labor for Pumicestone to check out how theyve adapted their business during COVID-1...9. Its great to see this iconic local business use the Palaszczuk Governments Small Business COVID-19 Adaption Grant to help Edith and the team transition their shop online! We know businesses have been doing it tough lately, thats why its important to continue to #supportsmall.

12.01.2022 Like many great things, mead takes time. Just after the festival in 2019, a new process began and is now ready. With the fate of this years festival, we bottled these very limited batches of both Traditional and Spiced flavours, and they are now available for purchase at our new online store (see link below). Each bottle is signed and numbered by the mead makers, Andy Coates and Nicola Jayne Cleaver, and they taste fantastic! Theres no better time to enjoy this mead. The nostalgic memories of festival weekend is here, the air is crisp, and the afternoon light is golden. *Bottles are available for purchase now but will be dispatched from the Abbey Museum on one day only...Monday, 17th August! 11.01.2022 How would it feel to piece together incredible fragments of medieval stained glass for the first time since they were smashed out by the Puritans 450 years ago?... In honour of National Archaeology Week, we sat with archaeologist and senior curator Michael Strong for an intriguing discussion about one of the Abbey Museums latest feats. Alongside the near completion of a fascinating book on the Abbey Museums stained glass collection entitled Glorious Glass, is an ongoing stained glass conservation effort. During this research, which includes discovering the stories of more than 400 fragments, Michael and his team have rare moments like the one he discusses in this video. Hear the story and see the pieces join together! Please share and enjoy! #2020NAW

10.01.2022 New home with a view for rainbow lorikeets! We have transformed four dead eucalypt trees into habitats hubs for wildlife at the Redcliffe Botanic Gardens. ...In fact, many native animals need hollow-bearing trees for survival, which can take up to 100 years to form in nature. When these trees naturally died, instead of cutting them down because of safety risks, we removed the unsafe branches and carved the trunks with nesting and breeding hollows. Its a win-win outcome of both a new natural habitat and a safe site! #WildlifeWednesday

01.01.2022 While the Abbey Medieval Festival holds appeal for the larger tournaments and amazing encamptments, its some of the smaller details of historical reenactment t...hat can capture your attention. Last year the Champion of the Ladies for the 14th century foot tournament recieved these crowns of woven red and yellow flowers for himself and his chosen Lady. "The ladies champion, as we choose it, is the combatant who has performed the most chivalric on the field, as well as excellent fighting skills. "Its not just the combat we look for. "If a combatant bows out of a fight because their opponent has faulty gear and doesnt take advantage of it to win, that is a chivalric act that can win favour with the ladies." The use of a chaplet of flowers as a prize is documented back at least to the 13th Century, and would be worn by some noble knights and their ladies festive occasions at European royal court. : Christine Morgan (Adamare Creations). Information from Lady Alice Wright from Companie Draco Routiers and Damien Fegan (Museum History Guy) from Historia.
