22.01.2022 South Australia has become the first state to ban single-use plastics including straws, stirrers and cutlery! This is good news for our oceans and wildlife. I wonder how long it will take for other states and territories to follow - will it be like plastic bags that took years to take hold and only became everyday practice when the big supermarkets made the choice to charge for them. Who will lead this change?

21.01.2022 Are the cicadas loud at your place? Are you seeing shells everywhere? We're in peak cicada season and Double Drummers are one of the NOISIEST... The incredible ...hatching you see here has been years in the making. The nymph spends many years underground sucking sap from the roots of plants. When conditions are right the cicada tunnels to the surface and walks to a nearby tree. Some cicadas climb fairly high, while others will start shedding almost as soon as they're vertical. They're particularly vulnerable during their hatching cycle and are tasty treats for birds, lizards and meat ants etc. Once they're out of their shell the remaining four to six weeks of the Double Drummer's life is spent producing deafening sounds, drinking sugar and having sex. Eggs are then laid in branches from which nymphs will hatch and fall to the ground to burrow. Wow, what a life cycle! We hope you enjoy this amazing time-lapse video captured, and shared with us, by Shawn Bourke. Thank you Shawn!

07.01.2022 Advice from Australian Seabird Rescue Central Coast, "If you're using disposable masks, please cut the straps off before placing them in the bin. Any looped fab...ric or elastic should be cut off and into smaller pieces. This also includes rubber bands, hair ties etc as they entangle birds feet and cause injury, pain, suffering and death for wildlife. Even better, wear appropriately made reusable masks, made from cotton fabric. They can then eventually be home composted or put in a worm farm." Illustration by Swon Studios and photos by RSPCA.
