21.01.2022 SES VOLUNTEERS HONOUR BOURKE LEGEND In 1962, Gundabooka man Percy Hobson was the first Indigenous athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth games. At on...ly 20 years old, and against all odds, this local high jumper broke the record when he leapt over a 6’11 high bar, in Perth’s Perry Lakes stadium. A feat which forever establishing Percy as one of Australia’s most iconic sportsmen. To pay tribute, his hometown of Bourke, NSW has celebrated Percy’s achievement by dedicating the Bourke Water Tower as a canvas for a large mural of Percy; a recreation of the iconic photo of Hobson bounding into the air; the moment he earned his first gold medal. Last week, NSW SES volunteers in Bourke joined community members to finish the mural with hand-prints at the base of the mural. Our volunteers came from NSW SES Bungendore, NSW SES - Cessnock City Unit, NSW SES Dungog Unit, NSW SES - Gosford Unit, NSW SES - Hunters Hill Unit, NSW SES Maitland Unit, NSW SES - Port Stephens Unit and NSW SES Sutherland Shire to assist the local community and the local unit during the current flooding event. 21.01.2022 Possible Heavy Rain and Storms on the Way for Hunter Area The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is encouraging residents to use the weekend to prepare for p...ossible thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain that are predicted to develop early Sunday and into early next week. At this stage there is potential for a low pressure system to form somewhere between the NSW Mid North Coast and South Coast that may result in periods of heavy rain, strong winds and hazardous surf conditions. NSW SES Northern Zone Deputy Commander Tony Day said "Currently there is some uncertainty about the location of the system however it is likely to bring the possibility of riverine and localised flash flooding as we move into next week." NSW SES is encouraging residents to clean roofs, gutters and downpipes, trim trees branches away from property and secure down outdoor items and furniture as a way of preparing their property for severe weather. Mr. Day continued, "The current COVID-19 environment presents additional considerations for emergency services in responding to severe weather events. So the most practical way the community can help should the heavy rain eventuate is to avoid all not essential travel and to never drive, ride or walk through floodwaters." The SES recommends people monitor the NSW Bureau of Meteorology for any severe weather warnings for heavy rain or riverine flood warnings. 08.01.2022 STRONG WINDS AND BIG SURF EXPECTED ON THE COAST Residents in the Mid North Coast and Hunter regions are warned of potential severe weather during the coming wee...k. Communities between Port Macquarie and Gosford should prepare for heavy seas and strong winds, commencing Monday evening, and lasting up to 48 hours. Operations Commander for the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES), Tony Day, said residents should prepare for winds averaging up to 60 kilometres per hour, with gusts of up to 90kph, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Bureau of Meteorology has also forecast swells of up to five (5) metres along the coast, which may cause coastal erosion, especially on southerly-facing beaches, Mr Day warned. We can expect the seas to be at their worst on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr Day (pictured) urged residents to stay clear of areas impacted by damaging surf, erosion scarps and damaged buildings or structures and not to go sightseeing, as this may hinder recovery efforts and put community members and emergency responders at risk. The NSW SES is encouraging residents to clean roofs, gutters and downpipes, trim trees branches away from property and secure down outdoor items and furniture as a way of preparing their property for severe weather. Mr Day added the current COVID-19 environment presents additional considerations for emergency services in responding to severe weather events. The most practical way the community can help should the predicted weather eventuate is to avoid all not essential travel and to never drive, ride or walk through affected areas, he concluded. 01.01.2022 ...2007 East Coast Low... " A ship has beached at Nobbys..." Those words appeared in a weather forum, in the morning on June 8th, 2007.... This of course, was the Pasha bulker, and the system soon after dubbed "the Pasha bulker storm". This East Coast Low has become one of our most memorable, and was 13 years ago this weekend... > < On the morning of the 8th June, the Pasha bulker was struggling hugely with conditions - massive swell up to 17.9mtrs - which would ultimately see it stranded at Nobbys beach. This particular ECL was a relatively small-scale low, but still packed a mean punch. Rain and strong winds a typical feature and signature of an east coast low. Some of the more impressive figures : Rainfall... Cessnock 243.6mm Gosford 339.4mm Peats Ridge 366.2mm Nobbys recorded a maximum wind gust of 124km/h, while Norah Head recorded a peak gust of 135km/h. A not so well know feature, this system spawned a snowfall of ~6cm across Murrurundi/Tamworth/Northern Tablelands areas. The Barrington Tops also saw snow ~10-15cm & fell to ~500m ASL!! This system was obviously very significant for us here in the Hunter, but was just one of five ECLs that impacted the east coast in June of 2007. The flooding that resulted was the largest scale since 1971 for Maitland and Singleton. These images are just a very small selection of charts/maps from this event, plus the now iconic Pasha bulk carrier.
