22.01.2022 Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) are compulsory in many NT commercial fisheries. VMS is a satellite-linked monitoring system that regularly provides authorities with commercial fishing boat location, course and speed. In this instance VMS allowed authorities to identify a nearby commercial fishing operation to the recreational vessel in distress. Contact was made with the commercial fishing operation who then provided immediate assistance to the stranded boat, helping it and the four occupants to shore. We applaud the great work done by all over the weekend. 21.01.2022 Today is National Sorry Day, a day that remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people forcibly removed from their families and communities throughout Australia’s history. These people are known as ‘The Stolen Generations’. Sadly, there are many in this country who don’t believe that it is necessary or important that days like today exist, but National Sorry Day has always been a part of the reconciliation process for Indigenous A...ustralians, initially focused on having the Australian Government formally recognise the forced removal policies and the enormous damage that resulted. National Sorry Day asks all Australians to never forget the Stolen Generations, and to understand that historical injustice remains a source of intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal people that in many cases cannot be pushed aside or easily overcome. 06.01.2022 On this day in 1967, Australia came together to answer a simple question, and in doing so changed history. The symbolic significance of the referendum, in which more than 90% of Australia’s population voted to count Aboriginal people as part of our population, cannot be understated. Essentially, it signalled a shift in the way future Australian governments approached Indigenous policies and issues, moving towards a focus on self-determination, reconciliation, and (eventually) closing the gap. 02.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE The Northern Territory Seafood Council are elated to be one of three fishing communities around the nation given the opportunity to participate in the Mental Health pilot program recently launched by Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), supported by Women in Seafood Australasia (WISA). There are no dedicated, on-the-ground mental health supports that specifically target NT commercial fishers, processors and farmers, said Northern Territory Seafood Council, Chief ...Executive Office, Mrs Katherine Winchester. Talking about mental health is not always the easiest conversation to have, but now more than ever it is the most important conversation to have. We need to raise awareness and start building a network of support, because the unique challenges are not well understood by those outside the industry.

01.01.2022 Mabo Day recognises that on June 3rd in 1992, the High Court of Australia threw out the principle of ‘terra nullius’ (nobody’s land), which is what allowed the British to claim Australia when they first arrived here. It was the Mabo decision that began the process which ended in Native Title legislation, so it is a significant one. Eddie Mabo, the man behind that particular case, fought for 10 years to have the Queensland Supreme Court and eventually the High Court acknowledge that just because Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples didn’t use the land in ways that Europeans constituted legal possession, that didn’t mean the land wasn’t theirs. Mabo was an significant historical figure. You can learn more about his life https://bit.ly/3wTvKec
