18.01.2022 This is our WA COVID-19 update for Sunday, 28 June 2020. ---- - Current cases -... One new active case of COVID-19 has been detected in Western Australia overnight. The States total cases is now 609, with five active cases. All five active cases involve returned travellers, and all five remain in hotel quarantine. To date, 595 people have recovered from the virus in WA. To date there have been 174,330 COVID-19 tests performed in WA. Of those tested, 30,698 were from regional WA. Note: an updated breakdown of cumulative COVID-19 tests performed in WA will be released on Monday. ---- - Phase 4 and the updated WA roadmap to easing restrictions - Phase 4 of eased restrictions is now in effect. Phase 4 is another giant step out of COVID-19 restrictions, with Western Australia miles ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to relaxing rules and restrictions. In line with expert health advice, the following changes are now in place: - All existing gathering limits, and the 100/300 rule, have been removed. Gathering limits are now determined by WAs reduced 2sqm capacity rule; - The 2sqm rule includes staff only at venues that hold more than 500 patrons; - Removal of seated service requirements at food businesses and licensed premises; - Alcohol can be served as part of unseated service arrangements; - No requirement to maintain patron register at food businesses and licensed premises; - All events are permitted except for large scale, multi-stage music festivals; - Unseated performances are permitted at venues such as concert halls, live music venues, bars and pubs; - Gyms can operate without staff present, but regular cleaning must be maintained; - The casino gaming floor has reopened under agreed temporary restrictions; and - Optus Stadium, HBF Park and RAC Arena can operate at 50 per cent temporary capacity. Under Phase 4 the temporary capacity of Optus Stadium is 30,633 for sport events (35,000 for concerts), HBF Park is 10,150 (16,500 for concerts), and RAC Arena is 7,150 (8,250 for concerts). Our phased approach has allowed us to get more Western Australians back to work and into more social and recreational activities, as together we continue to kick-start WAs economy. Western Australias COVID-19 restrictions will be relaxed even further as WAs roadmap is updated with Phases 5 and 6 to complete the removal of all restrictions. Depending on infection rates locally, Phase 5 is planned to be introduced on Saturday, July 18 and will result in the removal of the 2sqm rule. It is also expected to see the removal of all gathering restrictions, other COVID-related rules introduced by the State Government and the 50 per cent capacity limit for major venues. Phase 6 will include the removal of WAs hard border with the rest of the country and travel restrictions currently in place for remote Aboriginal communities. When an indicative date for Phase 6 is set in the future, it will be contingent on locally acquired infection rates in the Eastern States. To find out more, and to view WAs roadmap, please visit www.wa.gov.au/covid19roadmap ---- - Testing - Anyone in WA will now be assessed for a COVID-19 test if they present with ANY of the following: - a fever of 37.5C or above - a documented history of a fever in the last few days OR - an acute respiratory infection (e.g. shortness of breath, cough, sore throat) If you have these symptoms, please get tested, and help us identify every case of COVID-19 in WA as early as possible. - COVID clinics - Nine COVID clinics are now operational visit https://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/COVID-clinics to find your local COVID clinic. The clinics now open are at: - Royal Perth Hospital (Ground Floor, Ainslie House, 48 Murray Street) - Fiona Stanley Hospital (Allied Health 2, Gymnasiums, East End, Bedbrook Row) - Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (C Block, Hospital Avenue) - Armadale Health Service (Ground Floor, 3056 Albany Highway, Mount Nasura) - Rockingham General Hospital (Elanora Drive, Cooloongup) - Midland COVID Clinic: Front of St John of God Midland Hospital (access only via Yelverton Drive) - Joondalup COVID Clinic: Ground floor Joondalup Hospital (Car park P4, Regents Park Road - Enter via outside walkway between Specialist Medical West and Physiotherapy Department) - Bunbury Health Campus (Corner Bussell Highway and Robertson Drive, Bunbury) - Broome Hospital (Robinson Street, Broome) In other regional areas, people should go to a public hospital, health service or remote health clinic. Please call ahead if you are concerned that you have contracted COVID-19. Patients will be assessed and where appropriate tested, provided with appropriate information and referred for further medical treatment if necessary. Those individuals who are tested and well enough, will be asked to self-isolate while they await test results. Anyone who is confirmed to have COVID-19, who does not require hospitalisation will be required to stay in self-isolation as instructed by the public health team. It is also extremely important that people who are unwell and are concerned they have COVID-19 should immediately self-isolate and then seek further medical advice. - Respiratory clinics - Respiratory clinics are now open in Western Australia. Operating out of an existing GP clinic, the clinic will assess people who have mild to moderate symptoms and is part of the Federal Governments roll out of dedicated respiratory clinics being set up across Australia. More information and locations can be found here: https://www.health.gov.au//coronavirus-covid-19-gp-respira - Additional testing locations - Patients with a GP referral can also be tested at 11 private pathology collection centres across the metropolitan area. Clinipath, Western Diagnostics and Australian Clinical Labs have dedicated these collection centres for COVID-19 testing. People in regional and remote areas can continue to present to more than 100 public hospitals, health services or remote area health clinics for testing. The collection centres are: - Western Diagnostic Pathology - Duncraig, Myaree, Rockingham - Australian Clinical Labs - Booragoon, Mandurah, Ocean Reef, Subiaco - Clinipath - Cloverdale, Fremantle, Joondalup, West Leederville ---- - Closure of the WA border - Western Australias borders are closed to travel from interstate. An exempt traveller, who will be allowed into our State, must perform one of the following functions: - Health services - Emergency services - Transport, freight and logistics - Specialists skills, not available in WA, for industry or business continuity; - National or State security and governance; and - Courts and judicial services. There are also exemptions for FIFO workers and their families, however strict 14-day quarantine measures will need to be followed, when they first enter the State. Further exemptions will also apply on compassionate grounds. More information and a list of exemptions can be found at www.wa.gov.au/covid19www.wa.gov.au/covid19 If you are aware of someone breaching a requirement to self-isolate - please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or WA Police on 131 444. ---- While we are taking action to ease restrictions in Western Australia in line with expert health advice, we are also continuing to ensure that our State is ready for any future outbreaks of COVID-19 in Western Australia. The Western Australian health system and our hospitals are very well prepared to manage infectious disease situations and have well established systems and processes in place. The State Government is taking this very seriously and we need to remain prepared for a pandemic. Every action we take and decision we make is to protect Western Australians. It is important that we all continue to remain calm, vigilant and use common sense. The best thing we can do to protect ourselves is quality personal hygiene and exercise physical distancing by avoiding unnecessary personal contact. That includes covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands often with soap or sanitiser, staying home from work or school if unwell, avoiding shaking hands or hugging, and maintaining physical distance from others in public. Please also continue to follow the advice of authorities and doctors - anyone who is instructed to self-isolate must take the order seriously, stay home and not put others at risk. ---- Official information regarding COVID-19 in Western Australia - www.wa.gov.au/covid19 WA Department of Health information www.healthywa.wa.gov.au National Coronavirus Helpline 1800 020 080 WA COVID-19 health and information and advice - 13 COVID (13 26843) Smartraveller information regarding travel advice for Australians - www.smartraveller.gov.au

16.01.2022 Health care is an ever-evolving landscape, where by technologies and science are constantly improving the care we can offer our consumers. Nurses and midwives are at the forefront of discovering, managing or implementing the changes that can result from these improvements. Here at the CNMO we are strong advocates for lifelong learning, research and innovation. It is with delight that we share the news that one of our own Senior Nursing Officers, Lisa, has chosen to commence ...further study to broaden her understanding and application of health leadership. Lisa has chosen to study The Masters of Healthcare Leadership course at Southern Cross University and we are so proud that she was awarded The Bonnie Boezeman scholarship ahead of 80 other applicants across Australia. This scholarship was launched last year by Chief Executive Women in honour of one of their founding members, Bonnie Boezeman AO to help female nurses to develop their leadership skills and grow the nursing sector. We know there are more of you out there who aspire to further your knowledge and abilities, understanding that this will lead to stronger professions and better consumer outcomes. To support you the CNMO offers a number of scholarships - which are open now. Please follow the link below and consider an option that best suits your needs. https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au//Scholarships-an/Scholarships

15.01.2022 Today, as part of outlining our roadmap for the further easing of restrictions in WA, we had planned to announce a tentative date for the removal of WAs hard b...order. However, with the situation evolving in Victoria based on our health advice, we have decided to put that on hold. WA is already the most economically free and active State in Australia due to our relaxed restrictions, and with the Phase 4 and 5 changes weve just announced, that is set to continue. Our States handling and response to COVID-19 has been world-leading and soon, we will be able to enjoy the benefits of that response even more. But its important to acknowledge that our hard border has been an essential component for how quickly and significantly weve been able to make these changes. The current situation in Victoria is dire. Its extremely concerning. The spike in cases there is being closely monitored here. This is why a decision on our hard border will only ever be based on expert health advice. If Victoria has taught us anything in the last few days, its that the worst thing that could occur right now is the reintroduction of harsh restrictions in our community. It would devastate our local economy - more jobs would be lost, it would hurt small businesses and be very difficult for many of us to handle. Our hard border has been in place unashamedly to protect the health and well-being of Western Australians. It has allowed us to confidently ease restrictions more than any other State and open up our local economy. Throughout this crisis, I have communicated clearly and openly with the public of WA. I can tell you that the tentative date for the removal of the hard border was going to be the 8th of August. But right now, it would be irresponsible of me to earmark that date as our potential opening with the rest of the country. I wish I could give an indicative date today, but if I did, it would be against our health advice and quite frankly, it probably wouldnt hold. An indicative date will be set in the future, when its safe to do so. That date will take into account locally acquired infection rates in the eastern states. To be clear - the WA hard border will only be removed when the WA Chief Health Officer is confident the spread of infection is controlled in the eastern states. Our position is crystal clear on this. I know some businesses in the tourism and aviation industries are hurting I wish this wasnt the case. I can only urge every Western Australian, if they are in the position to travel and holiday in WA to support local tourism businesses do it. Think of it as your civic duty for your State. I know for some businesses, this is still not enough, but we will work with you and do what we can to help everyone get to the other side. Given the situation over east, I just cannot risk allowing the infection to return to WA and cause havoc. As we have all seen with COVID, it will devastate businesses and life as we know it. I will not risk the health of Western Australians and the potential damage to our economy, which is rebuilding now after the height of the pandemic. WA is moving ahead along our roadmap in a more progressive manner, both economically and socially. The Chief Health Officer is confident Western Australia can continue to move ahead of the national position because of our border controls and success to date. Our phased approach has allowed us to kick-start WAs economy. It has allowed us to progress even further. But we all need to be aware that the virus has not been eradicated, so we all have a personal responsibility to keep the community safe.

12.01.2022 *Recognising nurses lost to COVID-19* Led by Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer, Dr Robina Redknap, the CNMO team each lit a candle and observed a minutes sile...nce this week in recognition of the 194 nurses and midwives to date who have lost their lives during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Just as they have throughout history, nurses have been at the coalface during this pandemic. The success of our efforts to minimise infection here in Australia has meant we have been spared the experience of many countries in battling an onslaught of infection. But even here nurses have provided expert care and comfort to those suffering from the disease. Melbourne disability nurse, 55 year-old Sumith Premachandra, died from COVID-19 last month, and we mourn his loss as we mourn the loss of nurses across the globe who have died from the insidious infection. In honour of their lives and those in the nursing profession more broadly, we have listed the names of those lost below. 04.01.2022 Mens Health Week A note from the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer; Dr Robina Redknap In WA we know that male suicide is four times higher than females, and men are over-represented in the incidence of cancer, type-two diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and stroke.... We also understand, male nurses and midwives are so important to service delivery and consumer outcomes. Male health is improved by male-friendly health services that meet the needs of boys and men, and by encouraging engagement with those services. We thank each and every Western Australian male nurse and midwife for their valuable contributions. Unfortunately, male nurses and midwives continue to be under-represented, and we encourage men of all ages, whether they are recent graduates or mature age people investigating a career change, to think of nursing. https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au///mens-health-infographic.pdf

04.01.2022 Support nurses and midwives. 7 April 2020 is the day to celebrate the work of nurses and midwives and remind world leaders of the critical role they play in keeping the world healthy. Nurses and other health workers are at the forefront of COVID-19 response - providing high quality, respectful treatment and care, leading community dialogue to address fears and questions and, in some instances, collecting data for clinical studies. Quite simply, without nurses, there would be... no response. In this International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, World Health Day will highlight the current status of nursing and around the world. WHO and its partners will make a series of recommendations to strengthen of the nursing and midwifery workforce. This will be vital if we are to achieve national and global targets related to universal health coverage, maternal and child health, infectious and non-communicable diseases including mental health, emergency preparedness and response, patient safety and the delivery of integrated, people-centered care, amongst others. We are calling for your support on World Health Day to ensure that the nursing and midwifery workforces are strong enough to ensure that everyone, everywhere gets the healthcare they need. https://www.who.int//world-health-day/world-health-day-2020

02.01.2022 As part of the recovery planning from the COVID-19 pandemic, your ideas are sought, big and small, on how to get our State back on its feet. The Government has already put in place many initiatives, programs and stimulus measures in response to the pandemic and for early recovery. Now is your opportunity to let us know what you think are the key impacts, and have your say on the actions and priorities for recovery through the partnership of government, business, industry, tra...de unions, not for profits, local governments, the public sector and individuals in our community. We encourage you to take a look at the challenges listed below and submit your ideas to support Western Australias recovery: - Health - Economic infrastructure - Social - Industry - Regions - Public Sector. Challenges will be open from Thursday 28 May 2020 and will close on Friday 26 June 2020.

02.01.2022 State of the Worlds Nursing Report Launch - 07 April 2020 Nurses are critical to deliver on the promise of leaving no one behind and the global effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They make a central contribution to national and global targets related to universal health coverage, noncommunicable diseases, including mental health, emergency preparedness and response, patient safety, and the delivery of integrated, people-centred care, amongst others.... This State of the worlds nursing report, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with the International Council of Nurses and the global Nursing Now campaign provides a compelling case on the value of the nursing workforce globally. https://www.nursingnow.org/state-of-the-worlds-nursing/ https://apps.who.int//h/10665/331673/9789240003293-eng.pdf

02.01.2022 International Year of the Nurse and Midwife message from Dr Robina Redknap Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer Dr Robina Redknap extends her thanks and Christmas wishes to the nurses and midwives of Western Australia.

01.01.2022 Happy International Day of the Midwife WA midwife, Sara David, recognised on International Day of the Midwife, 2020 Today, Tuesday 5 May, midwives around the world will celebrate International Day of the Midwife. On this day of celebration it is with pride we showcase WA midwife, Sara David. ... Sara was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) this year for her service to international humanitarian programs a mission to which she has and will continue to dedicate her life. Sara is passionate about global midwifery. She has volunteered her time to set up networks in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and deliver better outcomes to women and babies in some of the most remote communities in the world. PNG is our nearest neighbour, yet expectant mothers living there are up to 35 times more likely to die during pregnancy than pregnant women in Australia. It is common for women in PNG to have multiple pregnancies many give birth to more than nine babies in their life time. This doesnt give their bodies time to recover and increases their risk of death. Sara is closely aligned with Global Health Alliance Western Australia (GHAWA) a program run through the Department of Healths Chief Nurse and Midwifery Office, which delivers professional development to midwives in developing countries. Sara wrote the GHAWA Maternal and Newborn Care training packages used to train midwives in Tanzania and has been pivotal in forging a partnership between GHAWA, East Sepik Province of PNG and Living Child Inc, which enabled the recent launch of the program in PNG. Sara remains humble. She says she would like to use the International Year of the Midwife and her recent honour to promote the need for more midwives in PNG, the work of Living Child Inc, and to educate the community both in Australia and in PNG about the important role midwives play in community development. She reminds us all that midwives are pivotal to educating communities about family planning, reproductive health counselling, preconception care, care during pregnancy, birth and postpartum, breastfeeding and transition to motherhood.
