19.01.2022 We still cant believe how quickly this year has gone! September is bushfire preparation month for us with many stations checking their personal equipment (PPE, PPC, changing out food and drink supplies etc) and adding to the appliance inventory (percolated hose, extra drinking water etc) This also involves things like checking hydrants where houses have a bush interface and generally having a look how things have changed in 12 months.... Fingers crossed for a quiet one this year - #frnsw #firerescue #PreparedForAnything #protectingtheirreplaceable #MoreThanFire #fire #rescue #hazmat #firefighter #firefighting #firefighterlife #emergencyservices - #australia #newsouthwales #oberon #centralwest #iphone11promaxphotography

19.01.2022 A reminder for those who need it: When you hear a siren or see the flashing blue or red lights of an approaching emergency vehicle: Give way to the emergency vehicle if you are stopped do not move until it is safe to proceed, even if the traffic light is green. If you are moving, you must slow down and stop if necessary to avoid a collision with the emergency vehicle.... Move out of the way as soon as you can safely do so Move over as much as you can to the left-hand side of the road or, if possible, move onto the road shoulder or breakdown lane. On multi-lane roads, try to move into the left lane to let the emergency vehicle pass Drivers on both sides of the road should be prepared to move out of the path of emergency vehicles Emergency vehicles with sirens sounding or lights flashing responding to urgent situations are not required to follow the rules, as long as it is safe for them to do so. Drivers should always be extra cautious when they see flashing lights or hear sirens. - #frnsw #firerescue #PreparedForAnything #protectingtheirreplaceable #MoreThanFire #fire #rescue #hazmat #firefighter #firefighting #firefighterlife #emergencyservices - #australia #newsouthwales #oberon #centralwest #iphone11promaxphotography

16.01.2022 Safety switches have a lifespan, just like smoke alarms. Check them twice a year to make sure they’re working properly.

15.01.2022 **VOLUME WARNING** A cool feature of the newly released iOS 14 is an accessibility feature for the hearing impaired called Sound Recognition which will bring up a notification on screen when your device hears a specific event. This is handy if the user has a Bluetooth hearing aid or similar alert device. To enable, go to: settings > accessibility > sound recognition > select on and what sounds you want alerts for (smoke alarms, fire alarms etc)... This feature is useless without a working smoke alarm. 13.01.2022 Bombala 230 girls in the big red house Fire + Rescue Bombala, Station 230 would like to shortly introduce you to our 5 Female Firefighters, Jade, Tammie, E...rin, Becky and Emily. Recently Station Commander Terry Lomas, alongside Firefighter Tammie Anderson made contact with Bombalas first Female FireFighter, Desirea Douch. Des has been a firefighter now with Fire + Rescue NSW for 17 years joining Bombala station in June 2003 then transferring over to Corowa in October 2011, where she was again the first and still only female FireFighter. Des explained, I am so proud and privileged to have 1st joined and trained in Bombala, to have learnt the skills from your current Captain Terry and previous captain Alan Toms and members who some have since retired. Alan Toms was the Captain of the Station when I first joined, and Terry was DC. To have been able to shadow the senior firefighters at that time, Neil Hennessey, Ozzie Benson, Steve Baldwin and Will Brown, and be trained and learn the skills from their years of experience and knowledge. Desirea Douch. Des mentioned her Dad was a Firefighter with the Bombala RFS at the time and heard they were looking for new recruits. Des mentioned, I first joined when I was 20 yrs old, I was working at Bombala Electrical and Hardware giving me the ability to respond for daytime availability. I have never been afraid to get my hands dirty or get in and prove I can do the job just as good the member next to me, which I believe is why I was accepted by the male members of the station at the time. This would have to be the biggest challenge/barrier in my career, the uncertainty of how I was going to be accepted. Obviously the station at the time was only setup for males, so a few changes needed to be implemented for me to fit in. This is something I have had to go through twice now, when I transferred over to Corowa I had to go through this situation again. Desirea Douch. Des spoke about why she started and the many different aspects to the job which includes wearing her uniform with pride and being prepared for anything. She simply loves helping people, giving back to the community and learning new skills, including firefighting, first aid, rescue, workplace safety, emergency management, and safe use of specialised tools such as chainsaws and rescue equipment. Des concluded, I am a mum with 2 kids, my 10 yr old daughter says she is going to become a firey with her mum when she is older, I can't wait for this day. I work fulltime and currently studying I am busy all the time and have so much on my plate, but I have so much more to give and I love getting out there and giving as much as I possibly can. As well as firefighting we do a lot of work within the community and I love visiting Preschools, Primary Schools and education centres and teaching the children about fire safety My advice is if you love being able to help people and make a difference, be part of a diverse team and learn so many life changing skills whilst still being able to maintain your current career then becoming a retained firefighter might be your next challenge. Desirea Douch. Dess proudest Fire and Rescue NSW achievements over the last 17 years was being presented the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and the National Medal alongside my brother who is also a Firefighter with Fire and Rescue NSW, Bombala 230 would like to thank Des for taking time to chat with us and most importantly inspire us girls. Tammie Anderson

11.01.2022 NSW Health is urging people to take precautions with heatwave conditions forecast for parts of the state this weekend. Simple ways to reduce the risk of heat-re...lated illness include: Avoid the heat of the day by staying indoors and keeping cool by using air-conditioning, fans and drawing blinds and curtains closed Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water Check on the welfare of vulnerable neighbours, friends and family Plan ahead for hot days. Signs of heat related illness include dizziness, tiredness, irritability, thirst, fainting, muscle pains or cramps, rapid pulse, shallow breathing, vomiting and confusion. People showing severe signs should seek urgent medical attention and, in an emergency situation, call Triple Zero (000). People should also continue to practise COVID-19 safe behaviour during the heatwave. If you are able to cool your home through a combination of fans, air-conditioning and closed blinds, please do so and stay at home. This is so physical distancing in other indoor spaces where people may seek relief from the heat, such as libraries or shopping centres, is not compromised. If you do leave your home to visit other indoor spaces, please physically distance and wear a face mask in places where you cannot maintain 1.5 metres distance from others. Keep in touch with relatives, neighbours and friends virtually through phone, social media or video call.
