24.01.2022 We are very grateful to have Orara Valley Honey products amongst the range of local food & craft at the Idle In Cafe Alison & Rod, the owners of this iconic cafe are community stalwarts & great supporters of other Orara Valley small businesses. So next time you are having coffee or a meal at the Idle Inn check out the shelves for our honey.

21.01.2022 Turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera) is flowering profusely in the Orara Valley at the moment. While not a great source of nectar or pollen it is adding to the good conditions we are seeing at the moment.

20.01.2022 We were pleased to host Paul from Sandy Beach at our one-day beekeeping workshop yesterday. Paul came to us with some experience in beekeeping. He has a Flow Hive and a couple of conventional hives however he felt that he lacked the skills to give them the best care possible. As usual, we spent the day focussing on the core skills of beekeeping including lighting a smoker properly and using a hive tool correctly. Spring is a great time to do a training course. Our spring... management work is in full swing and 2020 looks like it will be a good beekeeping season. Our workshops focus on "non adversarial" beekeeping skills which basically means the beekeeper working with the bees rather than against them. Participants are shown the skills and techniques to open large, strong hives without gloves and minimal PPE. Unlike courses with multiple participants, our students receive one on one mentoring all day and they open and inspect up to 20 hives. This ensures that they get to observe a wide range of hives including a couple of working Flowhives that are set up in our training apiary. Your trainer, Glenn Locke is an experienced full time beekeeper. He has completed formal training in pest and disease identification and he has a Certificate IV in Training & Assesssment. Our workshops receive consistently good feedback from students and you can take a look at our reviews on our Google my Business & Facebook sites. We can run a workshop on any day that you choose. Our weekend dates are filling fast and we are also taking bookings on weekdays. Need more information? Click on the link to our website in the comments section.

13.01.2022 I'm still getting calls for swarms in the Coffs Harbour area. This good-sized, shoulder height swarm was an easy catch. Swarming can be minimised or prevented by carrying out regular inspections and manipulating brood frames. We are taking bookings for our beginner's one-day workshops. 12.01.2022 We welcomed our latest one-day beekeeping workshop participant Dene, to Orara Valley Honey yesterday. Dene inherited a Flow Hive from a friend and he chose us to help him brush up on his beekeeping skills. Our bees are picking up nicely at the moment and it is very pleasing to see solid frames of brood like this after such a poor season in 2019. ... Our workshops focus on core skills including how to recognise healthy brood and identify every step in the life cycle of honeybees. Disease identification and management is a critical part of being a good beekeeper. Our trainer Glenn Locke has a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment and has also completed formal training in honeybee pests & diseases. American Foulbrood is endemic & common on the Mid North Coast. Would you be able to recognise the signs of AFB in your hives? Weekend spots for our one-day workshops are filling fast. We are also available to run workshops midweek. For more information click on the link in the comments.

11.01.2022 It was a pleasure to welcome Michelle & Jake to Nana Glen for our one-day beekeeping workshop. The Sydney based couple stayed in Coffs for a long weekend holiday/beekeeping adventure and had a well-earned break from the big smoke. Conditions were ideal for beekeeping. Spring is a busy time for beekeepers & we were able to take Michelle & Jake through a range of spring management techniques that we are implementing at the moment. We are having a great season and Michelle & J...ake were able to participate in hiving a couple of swarms as an added bonus to the day. As usual, we focussed on the core skills of beekeeping including lighting a smoker, how to open & close a hive, how to use a hive tool correctly, and the life cycle of bees with an emphasis on how to recognise healthy brood. We specialise in teaching non-adversarial beekeeping which means that we work with the bees and concentrate on not crushing or killing bees in the inspection process. That means fewer stings and less reliance on PPE. Mt. Coramba Apiculture provides all required PPE and we are fully insured. Your trainer Glenn Locke has a current, qualified first aider & he has a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment. Our weekend spots are filling fast and spring is a great time to learn about beekeeping. For more information click on the link in the comments.

10.01.2022 This old busted smoker makes a great pot for mint. Our garden looks great but we could use some rain.

09.01.2022 In case you missed it I was interviewed by Craig Quartermaine last night on ABC Radio. The interview starts at the 1 hr 10-minute mark and goes for about 15 minutes.

08.01.2022 Spring has arrived on the Mid North Coast and our beekeeping workshops are in full swing. We are grateful to Joelle, Andrew & Sam for choosing to participate in our one-day beekeeping workshops over the weekend. Our workshops focus on the core skills of beekeeping. Our trainer, Glenn Locke practices non-adversarial beekeeping. We can give you the confidence to handle large beehives with minimal PPE just like the old-timers. We welcome new beekeepers with Flowhives and we can show you the tips and tricks for success. Click on the link in the comments for more information about our beekeeping workshops.

06.01.2022 It was great to host Don Bode today from Costa Berries. Don works for the international branch of the Costa Group & while he calls Tasmania home he spends the majority of his time in Xishuangbanna, China where he helps to manage Costa's blueberry ventures. Don & his team looked after me like royalty when I visited China in December 2019 to deliver some bee related training to the farm managers & other staff so it was my privilege to return the favour in a small way today. Bees have a huge input into the productivity of berry farming & the Costa Group are very keen to ensure the welfare of bees used for pollination here as well as in China. Don left with some beekeeping experience which included hiving a swarm of bees in Nana Glen as well as a Mt. Coramba Apiculture cap. Thanks Don.

05.01.2022 With rain looming we spent the morning in the extracting room preparing these sample pots of natural honeycomb for Mother’s Day hampers. We are very great-full for the chance to help out another local small business and to promote our tasty local honey. Idle In Cafe

05.01.2022 The ability to see and recognise eggs in brood frames is a critical skill in beekeeping. The presence of eggs indicates that a laying queen is in the hive (mostly). In photo 1 the eggs can clearly be seen at the bottom of the cells like tiny grains of rice. In photo 2 the eggs have hatched and the newly emerged larvae are sitting in a small pool of worker jelly. The identification of all stages of brood is easy once you are shown the basics. We have dates available now for our beekeeping workshop at our training apiary in Nana Glen. Click on the link in the comments for more information about our beekeeping workshops.

03.01.2022 Thanks to Dudley for taking a one day beekeeping workshop yesterday. The weather was against us a little however we had enough sunny breaks to get through the day. A lot of our participants arrive with an interest in Flowhives however Dudley was looking at setting up a specialty apiary and was keen to look at our small scale extraction process that we have on site. Apart from that, the day was spent focussing on core skills such as lighting a smoker, using a hive tool correctly and non adversarial beekeeping. Our spring management program is in full swing so it is a great time of the year to take one of our workshops. Mt. Coramba Apiculture is accepting bookings now and our weekends filling up fast. Need more information? Click on the link in the comments to go to our website or give Glenn Locke a call on 0459066297.
