23.01.2022 Working on some spiral bushings to fix the peg taper on an older pegbox.
22.01.2022 January is a time of new beginnings, but for a lot of people in Australia, those new beginnings come from a destruction of everything they knew before. Massive amounts of the country are on fire, more are at risk. I appreciate all of those people in my life who are contacting me, checking that were safe, and I find myself sitting comfortably in my safe home, feeling helpless. The fires are being fought largely by volunteers, three of whom have now been killed fighting the re...lentless fires. And the Rural Fire Service just isnt equipped to cope with fires of this magnitude. They dont have the resources. All of this is a long winded way of saying that Pacific Violins has decided to donate 20% of Januarys proceeds to the RFS, and hope that my friends who might have some spare will consider donating as well. https://quickweb.westpac.com.au/OnlinePaymentServlet (This is a photo of a friends dog, when they were evacuated to the beach yesterday)
21.01.2022 We seem to be settling into this new way of life, so Pacific Violins will be slowly reopening to the public! That said, there are a few steps we are taking to be as safe as possible during this uncertain time. We have always been by-appointment-only, so that won't change. In addition, we will be doing a form of curbside drop-off, for the time being. Once instruments have come into the shop, they will be quarantined for a couple of days, before work begins. Our hope is that these steps will be sufficient to keep everyone safe and comfortable.
20.01.2022 It's a good day for a jig, so I would like to introduce you to my wing crack jig. I use a small wooden wedge to get the crack lined up, and a modified brass Japanese clamp to close it.
18.01.2022 Are you a violinist? A musician? A woodworker? A luthier? Someone whos interested in any of those things? If so, I would heartily recommend checking out Omo, a wonderful podcast about the Romance and Reality of Violin Makers. You can find it at www.omopod.com

12.01.2022 I thought the little bassbar wave needed a tiny canoe.

05.01.2022 The program for the Twilight Concert Series: Ecstatic Dances, on the 4th of July, looks fantastic. 04.01.2022 Its a good day for a jig, so I would like to introduce you to my wing crack jig. I use a small wooden wedge to get the crack lined up, and a modified brass Japanese clamp to close it.
04.01.2022 With the drop in humidity from 85% yesterday to 30% today, I wanted to reassure people that its not unusual for your pegs to let go or your bow hair to seem tighter than normal. But if your bridge has fallen or shifted, or you are worried about anything else, give us a call and we can sort it out.
03.01.2022 Pacific Violins will be closed from the 11th of June through the 17th of July. We will be available through email and Facebook to book appointments and make inquiries, but the telephone will not be functional at that time.
01.01.2022 Finally got the chance to play with my new black light flashlight! It really brings the varnish touch up into stark contrast.
01.01.2022 The world has changed a lot in a couple of weeks, and so I think the time has come to proactively shutter Pacific Violins for a while. Well be up and running as soon as it is safe to do so, but to protect the most vulnerable amongst us, I think the only thing to do is to slow down non-essential services. If you have an instrument-related problem, please get in touch and Ill see what I can do to help you through it, by phone, WhatsApp, text, email or Skype. If you would like to support us during this time, please consider purchasing a gift certificate for a bow rehair which can be redeemed when things have settled. Stay safe, and keep making music.
