24.01.2022 Tooth Coloured Restorations Tooth Coloured Restoration White Fillings Most people will require a filling at some point in their lives even with a good oral hygiene routine. Thanks to advances in modern dental materials and techniques, dentists have more ways to create pleasing, natural-looking smiles. Dentists and patients today have several choices when it comes to selecting materials to repair missing, worn, damaged or decayed teeth. White fillings, also known as compos...ite restorations, have revolutionised restorative dentistry by providing a treatment option that can be colour-matched to your teeth. This provides a natural looking, more aesthetically pleasing restoration. Another key benefit of white fillings is that they are easy to mould. This allow us to customise your fillings to match your tooth colour, anatomy, and adjust it to feel comfortable in your bite. Over time silver amalgam fillings can contract and expand with changes in temperature, causing your teeth to fracture. We can now easily replace your defective silver amalgam fillings with white fillings or a custom inlay. Also, unlike silver amalgam fillings, white fillings contain no mercury. Doctor Lisa Chong is highly experienced to help you choose the safest and most suitable tooth colour restoration for the brilliant smile you have always wanted. 19.01.2022 Symptoms of TMJ If you’re experiencing any of the following, you may be dealing with a temporomandibular joint disorder: Pain or tenderness in your jaw joint Pain in your neck or shoulders Tired feeling or pain in your face... Swelling on the side of your face Pain in or around your ear Pain while chewing or an uncomfortable bite Toothaches Headaches Dizziness Hearing problems or ringing in the ears (tinnitus) Locked jaw, which makes it difficult to open or close your mouth Clicking or grating sensation when opening and closing your mouth Risk factors and causes While it’s usually easy to recognize the symptoms of temporomandibular joint and nerve pain, it’s more difficult to determine what’s causing your pain. Your doctor or dentist may not be able to tell you what’s causing your TMJ pain. However, a TMJ disorder can occur under the following situations: Arthritis damage in joint cartilage Disc erosion in the jaw A jaw injury like whiplash or a heavy blow Grinding or clenching teeth (chronic) Stress or anxiety that causes you to tighten facial and jaw muscles Poor posture Orthodontic braces Excessive use of chewing gum Connective tissue diseases that affect your temporomandibular joint Diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorder One of the first people to notice or diagnose a TMJ disorder is usually your dentist. However, your family physician, an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, or an oral surgeon can also diagnose and treat your TMJ. Typically, your doctor will check your jaw joints for pain and tenderness. They’ll also listen for any clicking or grating sounds when you move your jaw and check your jaw’s movement and facial muscles. X-rays or further testing like a CAT scan or MRI can also help your doctor rule out other issues and give a full picture of what’s happening in your face. Medical treatment See your doctor if the pain and tenderness in your jaw is persistent, or if you can’t open and close your mouth. A doctor may recommend the following types of treatment: Medications such as pain relievers, muscle relaxers, or anti-inflammatory drugs. Oral splints or mouth guards. These oral devices can be soft or hard and usually slip over your teeth to help keep your jaw in place. 16.01.2022 Temporomandibular joint disorder The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. There is one on each side of your face, in front of each ear. These joints allow the movements needed for speaking, eating and facial expression. Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can cause pain, abnormal jaw movements and joint noises. They are quite common. TMD symptoms... If you have TMD, you may have: discomfort or pain in the jaw, especially when eating an aching pain in front of your ear, which may spread to your face ‘locking’ of the jaw, making it difficult to open or close your mouth a clicking or grating noise when you open your mouth or chew an uncomfortable or uneven bite What causes TMD? TMD can be caused by a number of different things, including: dental (tooth) issues for example, if you have new fillings or dentures causing an uneven bite wear and tear of the joint, usually caused by osteoarthritis an injury jaw clenching and teeth grinding, which may be linked to stress other diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia or gout Sometimes, people have TMD without any obvious cause. When to seek treatment? If you think you might have TMD and it’s bothering you, see your doctor or dentist. They will do a physical examination. You might be asked to have an x-ray, CT or MRI scan. TMD treatment TMJ pain may go away without any treatment. In the meantime, there is plenty you can do to relieve the symptoms of TMD: eat soft food avoid chewing gum cut all food into small pieces avoid clenching your jaw avoid opening your mouth wide wear a mouthguard while you sleep to prevent jaw clenching or teeth grinding You can also try relaxation techniques to relieve stress. Gentle jaw-strengthening exercises might also help. It is not known which medications are effective for TMD. However, medications that may be tried include painkillers, medications that treat inflammation and muscle relaxants. In most cases, TMD improves over time. Very few people need surgery. 12.01.2022 Veneers Are you suffering from stained, discoloured teeth, chipping, cracks, worn teeth or gaps? If YES, then you might need dental veneers, also known as porcelain veneers, to improve your appearance by covering the front surface of your teeth with a thin layer of porcelain or a composite resin material. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of... less of the tooth surface before placement. You will need to discuss the best choice of veneer material for you with your dentist. Why Veneers? Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten your front teeth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look whole again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth, with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) is not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or teeth that are chipped or worn may consider veneers. Generally, veneers will last for many years, and the technique has shown remarkable longevity when properly performed. A veneer takes at least two visits. The first is to prepare the tooth and match the shade, and the second is to fit it. Before bonding it in place, your dentist will show you the veneer on your tooth to make sure you are happy with it. Bonding a veneer in place is done with a special adhesive, which holds it firmly on the tooth. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth and would like to explore how veneers can assist in improving your appearance veneers may be the solution for you. Expertly matched veneers can give your smile the proportions and evenness you have always wanted. 11.01.2022 Sleep Apnea And Dental Health Over 18 million adults in the US alone, as well as up to 20 percent of habitually snoring children, have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that results in brief but repeated interruptions to normal breathing during sleep. Not only is this a potentially life-threatening disorder, it also has a significant impact on oral health. What Does Sleep Apnea Have To Do With Teeth? In addition to leaving you with all the usual symptoms of sleep d...eprivation, such as exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, and morning headaches, sleep apnea has a number of effects on oral health. There is a significant association between OSA and moderate to severe periodontitis (gum disease), but the most common dental health complications are temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ or TMD). Studies have shown that the jaw reflexively clenches to prevent the airway from becoming blocked when the throat relaxes during a sleep apnea episode. TMD leads to other problems like worn, cracked, or broken teeth, pain when chewing, chronic headaches, and neck and shoulder pain. How The Dentist Can Help The dental effects of sleep apnea are so common that your dentist might be the first one to spot the signs and diagnose the disorder. This is just one way your regular dental appointments will benefit your overall health. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, common treatment options include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines and nighttime dental devices that push the tongue or the lower jaw forward. Healthier Sleep For Healthier Smiles If you’ve been experiencing any of the symptoms described above, there’s no reason to continue living with interrupted sleep and the health problems that come with sleep apnea. Give us a call or drop by our practice today to schedule an appointment so that we can see if sleep apnea is the cause and get you on the path to more restful sleep and better oral health. 07.01.2022 What are wisdom teeth? Wisdom teeth are the teeth at the back of your mouth (the third molar teeth). They tend to come through (erupt) in the late teens or twenties. Some wisdom teeth do not come through fully (partly erupt) and get stuck (or impacted) against nearby teeth or bone. This often leaves a flap of gum over your tooth. Others grow too long (over erupt). A wisdom tooth may need to be removed for one or more of the following reasons. repeated or serious infection o...f the gum tooth decay a wisdom tooth can grow out too far and damage the cheek or gum you may need an operation to move your jaw forwards or backwards your tooth may be in a position that makes it difficult to clean properly an orthodontist may need to make space to move other teeth backwards you may have a cyst near or around your tooth, or other jaw problems your tooth may be in the line of a jaw fracture Are there any alternatives to removing a wisdom tooth? Simple painkillers such as paracetamol can help control mild pain caused by wisdom teeth. Antibiotics and rinsing with hot, salty water or chlorhexidine mouthwash can help when the area around the wisdom tooth is infected. Removing the gum lying over your tooth (operculectomy) may be possible in certain cases if a wisdom tooth has partly erupted. If the root of your tooth lies close to the nerve that supplies feeling to your lower lip, it is possible to remove just the crown of your tooth (coronectomy). What does the procedure involve? Most upper wisdom teeth can be removed easily under a local anaesthetic. Lower wisdom teeth can be more difficult to remove. The procedure usually takes 10 minutes to an hour, depending on how many wisdom teeth need to be removed and how difficult they are to remove. Removing a wisdom tooth can involve cutting the gum to uncover your tooth, removing bone around your tooth and dividing your tooth with a drill. What complications can happen? pain bleeding swelling and bruising infection dry socket, where the socket does not heal well retained roots, where it is not possible to remove the whole tooth damage to nearby teeth sinus problems broken jaw not being able to open your mouth fully (trismus) and jaw stiffness damage to nerves osteonecrosis, a rare condition where tissue in your jawbone starts to die Website: https://painfreedentistsydney.com.au/ Phone: (02) 9558 8988 Email: [email protected] Twitter: https://twitter.com/PFDentistSydney Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/painfreehurlstonepark #wisdomteeth #wisdomteethremoval #wisdomteethextraction #painfreedentistry

02.01.2022 Botox Treatments with Botulinum toxin (Botox) in Dentistry is part of the new concept of Complete Dento-Facial Aesthetics, as the work performed by the dentist inside the mouth is intimately related to the rest of the patient’s face (lips, muscles and joints). Until now, dentists were able to create works of art inside the mouth but have not been able to frame them properly, achieving limited results because of the worn and aged appearance of the rest of the face. Now, by us...ing simple, fast, minimally invasive techniques to improve the soft tissues around the mouth, Dentists can enhance the results by treating the patients more holistically. The ultimate goal of facial injectable aesthetic treatments is for the patient to look a fresher, more relaxed, healthier and revitalized version of themselves. How Botox Works Repeated contraction of the muscles of the face when we smile, talk, frown and chew result, with time, in lines, that end up marking the skin. By reducing the ability of the muscle to contract, these lines are no longer formed and will soften over time, as the overlying skin has time to recover. Anti-wrinkle injections are recommended when the lines remain visible when the muscles are not contracted, at rest. Botox injections are done in specific areas to minimize the action of specific muscles, reducing its contraction and therefore the wrinkles formed by it. The result takes 3-7 days to appear and usually lasts for 4-8 months, depending on the area treated. The most common uses for anti-wrinkle injections are for treatment and prevention of crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead lines and bunny lines (nose). Great results can also be achieved in the treatment of gummy smiles, reducing the activity of the muscles that pull the upper lip up when smiling. Botox can also be used to reduce the activity of overactive muscles in patients suffering from grinding and clenching, usually in conjunction with a night guard.
