25.01.2022 Fantastic opportunities for Pasifika women here.

25.01.2022 We were in awe of the beautiful Pasifika Talanoa communities conference on Saturday. Thanks to all who planned and attended and made this event so special. We were taken aback by the wisdom of those that attended. We loved seeing how connections were being made and that actions and solutions were being crafted on the spot. While hard challenging issues were being discussed, a spirit of mana and strength was immense. Next Steps - We are taken aback by the potential moving for...ward and the ideas that arose and that can arise after the conference. We are fleshing these out and still continuing the Talanoa process with communities near and far, across thr country. Leading to early 2020, we will focus on continuing the Talanoa with all peoples who will invite us and will share information to Pasfika communities. In the new year, we will have an idea of where our efforts should focus on. In this reflective process, we will be engaging with those on our contact list and seeking that it be led by community led as much as possible - including those that attended the conference and those that didn't. If you didn't attend, but would like to be kept in the loop or be involved where you can and as much as you can, please email us to express your interest in joining the list on [email protected]. We are looking to send out monthly newsletters. We want to continue the Talanoa dialogue with you and insist on authentically acting upon it. A big thank you to the incredibly insightful and enthralling workshops led by Andrew Fa'avale, Jioji Ravulo and Denisse Sandoval. Thanks for the photo Phil Start Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY)

21.01.2022 French Polynesia has announced the first case of Covid-19 in Tahiti, the first confirmed case of the coronavirus across the Pacific Islands. French Polynesia has announced the first case of Covid-19 in Tahiti, the first confirmed case of the coronavirus across the Pacific Islands. President Edouard Fritch, said that French Polynesian politician Maina Sage had been confirmed with the virus after returning from Paris on 7 March. Sage is resting at home in self-isolation in Pape...ete. French Polynesia, which comprises more than 100 islands, the largest of which is Tahiti, is a French overseas collectivity. Sage is French Polynesias representative in the French National Assembly. Announcing the first confirmed case of the coronavirus in Tahiti, President Fritch reassured people about government plans for monitoring, testing and isolation. He stated, however: I invite the population to avoid travel outside the country. Last month, French president Emmanuel Macron postponed a long-scheduled visit to French Polynesia because of the international health crisis. Macron was due to visit between 16-18 April for a summit with Pacific Island leaders, but his trip has been delayed until later this year. Regional organisations and Pacific governments are preparing for more cases of Covid-19 in the islands region, as the World Health Organisation declares a global pandemic. But many citizens in small island developing states are fearful of the potential stress on medical services. An epidemic of measles across the Pacific last year highlighted the potential for adding to existing burdens on public health systems from non-communicable diseases. The international spread of the virus is starting to affect tourism in the islands a vital source of revenue and employment. Many island nations have restricted visits by cruise ships and changed air schedules for their national airlines: Air Calédonie International has announced it will reduce the number of scheduled flights to Melbourne and Osaka from May, while Air Tahiti Nui has reduced flights to Japan. In an unprecedented step, the Republic of the Marshall Islands restricted all airline travel into the country for two weeks, until 22 March. President Edouard Fritch, said that French Polynesian politician Maina Sage had been confirmed with the virus after returning from Paris on 7 March. Sage is resting at home in self-isolation in Papeete. French Polynesia, which comprises more than 100 islands, the largest of which is Tahiti, is a French overseas collectivity. Sage is French Polynesias representative in the French National Assembly.

20.01.2022 Pacific island story telling competition, Take a look at the information below. Support and encourage your youth!

20.01.2022 In Gangsters in Paradise - Deportees of Tonga, VICE embeds with four Tongan nationals who have been sent back to the tiny island nation where they were born after serving prison time in New Zealand and the United States. Former gang members, they often struggle to reconnect with the culture, the language, and the people. They are haunted by the stigma of their criminal pasts, which casts a pall over their employment prospects and puts a barrier between them and their compatriots. Government support for returnees is non-existent, wages are low, and with Tonga in the midst of a methamphetamine crisis, the temptations to revert to the lives of crime they hoped to leave behind when they left prison are high.

20.01.2022 The Pacific Islands are drowning under rising sea levels. These stunning photos show their precarious way of life.

19.01.2022 A short video on last month's Pasifika Talanoa Conference in Melbourne. A conference for Talanoa, for culturally safe dialogue, on tough and important issues but using a strengths based framework. Pasifika and non-Pasifika came together to honestly and generously share stories and views as well as innovative, collaborative and strengths-based ideas and solutions. Thanks to Andrew, Jioji and Denisse for their fantastic workshops. Thanks to Semisi, April and Marie for their o...rganising the day and for all those who attended, supported the conference and made it such a tremoundous community led and community building event. We are so very excited by what the conference set in motion. We know that we are committed to holding spaces for Talanoa will be held in Victoria and in other states. We have ideas of other follow up work as well. We emphasise that we want to do everything alongside Pasifika peoples, those who work with them and those who are interested. Please feel free to contact us via Facebook messenger or email [email protected] NOTE: We are on holidays, but we will be back mid January 2020. We wish you a very blessed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

18.01.2022 On Thursday, Australia broke Wednesdays record for hottest ever. The effects have been terrifying. Australias federal politicians largely acknowledge that climate change has a role to play in the bushfires. (The main points of difference are the extent of that role and the response needed in light of that). This Christmas, we should support our volunteer firefighters and those in need with the gift of a much needed generous donation. ... As the Maori proverb goes, the most important thing in the world is the people. #bushfires #climatechange #donate #Christmas #Australia #solidarity #community

15.01.2022 Cyclone Harold to go through Tonga. Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in the Kingdom that they be safe and well.

15.01.2022 "When you think you can't go any further, lean on someone else". The food has been amazing, but nothing has topped the people and the stories that we've heard today.

13.01.2022 Getting ready for the Pasifika Communities Conference tomorrow. We will be hearing and learning from many people, including Jioji Ravulo, Andrew Fa'avale and Denisse Sandoval. Thank you to the very talented Isaiah Strickland, whose artistic skills produced the beautiful turtle you see.

12.01.2022 An outstanding workshop delivered by Andrew Faavale from MANA Pasifika. Our participants, community and stakeholders, have provided overwhelmingly positive feedback. We appreciate the expertise of MANA Pasifika in what they do and look forward to working alongside them in the future.

09.01.2022 For the NZ Citizens living in Australia... Visa cancellations and deportation is a topic that creates fear and anxiety for people with criminal convictions. M...y view is this, there is hope You cant change the past (convictions) but there are things you can do to protect your future in Australia. Its all about being informed and being prepared. What we know... It doesnt matter if youve lived here for 1 year or 30 years, if youre on temporary visa or permanent visa, there is a risk of your visa being cancelled if youve been in trouble with the law. People can go through the criminal justice system and it may not be for another 1, 2, 3+ years later when a letter arrives in the mail called a notice of intention to consider cancelling visa (NOICC). Travelling may trigger the department to consider cancelling your visa. Heres a few things you can do.... Keep all your papers from your criminal law case, charges, summary of facts, pre-sentence reports, even character references that are handed up to the court. Hold on to all your certificates of any courses youve done like drug and alcohol counselling, anger management, relationship counselling. Stay connected with support services, community groups, counselling, all the positive things in your life to keep you reoffending. These are called protective factors and when we prepare these submissions we look to these people/services to prepare letters of support. Its helps demonstrate a person is not likely to reoffend. If youve got kids in Australia and there are family court orders in place, keep copies. Keep all paperwork from family violence proceeding, the court orders (AVO/IVO/DVO/FVRO), even the applications that are served on you at the beginning, and any applications to vary the order. Take a photocopy/scan of your passport (photo page). Scan all of this material and email it to yourself. If you receive a NOICC you receive very little time to respond. This will save so much time and stress and you can then focus on putting your best case forward. If you are travelling, get these things in place before you leave. Consider getting confidential legal advice from about your individual circumstances. Finally, once you get prepared... KEEP LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE... connected to family, community, employment, support services and social groups. We cant know if or when you may get a notice about a visa cancellation, but what we do know is those who are prepared for the worst and living their best life, give themselves the best chance to remain in Australia. #hope #beprepared #visacancellations

06.01.2022 INVASION DAY How can we celebrate Australia on January 26, a day that commemorates the day the British stole the country from our Indigenous peoples? It boggles the mind. Can we be patriotic and support a change of date? On this day people will sing the national anthem that claims Australia is young and free. Australia is not young, people were here for 65,000 years plus. Hard to say Australia is free when indigenous peoples were put in chains from the beginning, as they are... still the most incarcerated indigenous population of any country in the world. January 26 1788 signifies destruction, massacre and oppression for Aboriginal peoples and its insensitive to celebrate Australia on this day. None can get close to understanding the struggles of our Aboriginal brothers and sisters today without understanding the impact of that terrible day and the events of colonisation that followed. #noprideingenocide #changethedate #alwaysalwayswillbeaboriginalland

05.01.2022 Congratulations to the team behind the Pasifika Festival VIC on their annual celebration of vibrant Pasifika cultures and talents that our peoples are blessed with and known for. We were made aware of the clash after invitations had gone out and would have chosen a different date for our Pasifika Conference if time permitted. Unfortunately, there is no statewide calendar that documents our work and this clash was an unfortunate mistake. Luckily, in this instance, both events... were an outstanding success because they attracted different audiences, were held in different locations and were centred around different purposes. For all events led by Pasifika Talanoa we have and will always look to avoid clashes where possible through consultation with community. We want to work with all our Pasifika peoples through a spirit of unity and respect to utilise the power each of us possess to a point where our collective Mana cannot be ignored. We emphasise that we seek to support and complement all work that benefits our Pasifika peoples - in whatever form it takes. We will inhabit de-colonial ways of working alongside our Pasifika brothers and sisters and all stakeholders (including non-Pasifika) who are in this space (or wish to be invited to enter it). We have exciting ideas that require allies, flowing on from Pasifika Conference and we invite ALL peoples to be in touch with us for these discussions. There is no space owned by anyone. The potential is huge. Please jump on our contact list to be kept in the know or be actively involved - [email protected]
