25.01.2022 #Scienceweek part 2 - Meet Mark Lindsay from The University of Western Australia whose research interests include complexities of uncertainty and ambiguity in 3D geological and mineral exploration modelling, and the process and psychology of data interpretation Watch how he does it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1qgYRP57VE

25.01.2022 Powering the next generation of Australian research with HPE - The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre has selected Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to deliver its new #supercomputer, which will power future high-impact Australian #research projects by delivering 30 times more compute power than predecessor systems Magnus and Galaxy. Pawsey’s new system will be built using the HPE Cray EX supercomputer, with expanded data storage capabilities through the Cray #ClusterStor E1000 sy...stem, significantly increased compute power and more emphasis on accelerators with future-generation AMD EPYC CPUs and AMD Instinct #GPUs. 24.01.2022 A new graphics processing unit (GPU) cluster supporting one of Australias Square Kilometre Array (SKA) precursor telescopes is fully operational at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre enabling researchers to accelerate their data processing and deliver new insights about our Universe. The $2 million cluster, procured from HPE in early 2020, is now available to researchers using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescope. The upgrade is one part of a $70 million Pawsey... capital refresh project funded by the Australian Government. #Garrawarla provides users with enhanced #GPU capabilities to power #AI, computational work, #MachineLearning workflows and data analytics. At the same time, Pawsey has awarded a $1 million procurement to HPE for new ingest nodes to support researchers using CSIROs Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The ASKAP ingest nodes are one of the most critical components of the pipeline between ASKAP and the Pawsey data store, which houses the telescopes final data products. 24.01.2022 The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre for Extreme scale Readiness (PACER) program is coming soon to advance Australian computational researchers and prepare them for the next era of supercomputing, in time for Pawseys new supercomputing system. In our upcoming #AskMeAnything (#AMA) event on Monday 17th August, join our experts and ask them anything about #PACER. Register here for event details, or even submit your question in advance: https://pawsey.org.au/event/pawsey-hour-ask-m...e-anything-16/ In 2018 the Australian Government awarded $70 million to upgrade Pawseys supercomputing infrastructure, on top of the $80 million granted in 2009 to establish a petascale supercomputing facility. The Pawsey upgrade, as a major part of the national High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, is ensuring Australia continues to enable computationally and data-intensive research. PACER will involve the application adaptation and optimisation of selected, significant challenges of science on an extreme scale. PACER will prepare researchers code optimisation, application and workflow readiness by running a Grand Challenge Problem; for projects running on a previously unavailable scale on the next-generation supercomputer. Register here for event details, or even submit your question in advance: https://pawsey.org.au/event/pawsey-hour-ask-me-anything-16/

14.01.2022 Happy #scienceweek - Prof. Linqing Wen from The University of Western Australia is one of Australias top #astrophysicists. She builds and tests software to detect the tiny cosmic ripples generated by gravitational waves The beginning of her career ran parallel to the construction and opening of the Laser Interferometer #Gravitational-Wave Observatory (#LIGO), which would come to be the most important tool for the modern renaissance of gravitational physics. Two LIGO detectors would go on to detect the first gravitational wave caused by the merger of two black holes, each roughly 30 times the mass of our sun. 12.01.2022 Dr Chenoa Tremblay, Postdoctoral Fellow in Dark Magnetism at CSIRO, is using Pawsey’s existing supercomputing systems to analyse extremely sensitive radio telescope signals that could give us our first potential evidence of life outside our solar system. Her team’s work requires scanning more than ten million stars and analysing hundreds of terabytes of data, a herculean task that will be accelerated with the new supercomputer. Doing this on my laptop would take 25 years, Dr Tremblay said. Pawsey’s supercomputing systems have brought some of our research timelines from years down to days, giving us the power we need to analyse hundreds of thousands of images quickly. With the signals being very weak, finding new ones will require even more data to crunch.

07.01.2022 Happy #scienceweek! Watch our space as we highlight our incredible researchers who accelerate and drive Australian scientific impact every day. First up, we have Raffaella Demichelis, a #computationalchemist solving the world's #energy problems Demichelis goal is contributing to solve critical problems that society faces today and in the future a key problem being the production and consumption of energy. Her work aims to provide evidence that computational methods (o...r virtual experiments) are able to successfully address complex problems within the chemical sciences. I believe this point is very important given the growing computing capabilities now available in Australia and in the world, she said. In other words, she is using her deep understanding of chemistry to explore how to mimic what happens in nature (geomimetic chemistry) and to eventually apply it to address environmental and energy problems in the real world. Essentially developing a new chemical pathway to produce clean energy Read her full case study here: https://pawsey.org.au/researchers/dr-raffaella-demichelis/
