25.01.2022 I arrived at a clients home today to find this, and a little pail of dog treats!! BRILLIANT! #positivedogtrainingworks #trainwithbrains #cookietossersanonymous #aintmisbehavin'

24.01.2022 This past weekend I’ve been virtually attending IAABC’s and Fenzi Dog Sports Academy’s The Lemonade Conference. Although I’ve barely scratched the surface of a...ll the incredible presentations and knowledge offered, this quote from Bob Bailey’s The Principles & Practices of Operant Conditioning, or Animal Training lecture immediately made an impact. Bob Bailey (with over 70 years of training experience across countless species) reminds us that learning and changing our behavior is nothing to be afraid of. Realizing that there’s a better way to do something today than we did yesterday is not an indictment on who we are. It is not a failing. It is not a weakness. Learning to do better and then doing it is, in fact, brave. Nowhere is it more needed than in the world of dog training. Hanging on to outdated ideas or aversive and intrusive procedures because it’s what we know and how we’ve always done it is not a virtue or a strength. It doesn’t serve us or the living beings we put our hands on. What if when encountering the proposition that something can be done better, less aversively, and more humanely, instead of doubling down we opened our minds and asked how? How would this change us, and how would it ultimately change our world?

23.01.2022 Well here’s something I never thought I’d have to post. If any of you still like/follow the Best Friends Animal Society page please consider withdrawing your support. I’m so sad about this

19.01.2022 5 simple tips for improving the life of your reactive dog

18.01.2022 We will get through these difficult times, but we have to help each other and do our part. Be safe. Be well. xo

17.01.2022 Meme Saturday... EDITED: this can be a hard concept to wrap our minds around, so let me elaborate. Hugging is simply one example of human to human comfort. Not... all people find hugging positive, it depends on the subject. COMFORT is what is helpful to the individual dog... touch, praise, white noise, a favorite chew, a dark place to hide, etc... it will differ for each individual. By operational definition, negative emotions, like fear, cannot be positively reinforced. Ie: we cannot ADD (+) something the DOG finds rewarding (R) to make FEAR stronger. See more

16.01.2022 It has come to our attention that there is a backyard breeder forging vaccination certificates with our details. This is being investigated with the police, co...uncil and veterinary surgeons board. The label for this vaccine is missing the batch and expirery date, so unlikely that these dogs are covered, it is also missing the owner details, which is needed on the certificate. If you have a similar certificate , please get in contact with us.

09.01.2022 Traditional discipline methods only deal with the surface behaviour....this is why popular ‘quick fix’ parenting techniques involving punishments, praise, ignor...ing behaviour and rewards/bribes are so ineffective! (And potentially damaging). To change the behaviour you must work with the root cause....and the only way to do that is to work collaboratively with the child, to identify and solve problems together. This is why I always focus on the causes of the behaviour, not just reacting to the behaviour itself. Read more here: https://sarahockwell-smith.com//the-two-most-important-st/ @tinybuddha

07.01.2022 DOG OWNER WARNING: Poison dog bait has been found at River Torrens Linear Park this morning at Dernancourt. Be cautious if walking dogs in the area. SA Police has been contacted.

05.01.2022 Making sure your dog is never alone for longer than he can handle is crucial for the desensitization process. There are many creative ways to make sure someone ...is with your pup when you cannot be. It really does take a village. You can learn more about this (and much more!) through our online course: https://malenademartini.com//separation-anxiety-in-dogs-m/

04.01.2022 Aggression ladder. Often when people say a dog "bite out of the blue" they actually missed the warning signs the dog provides. Dogs do not always display every ring of this ladder, but they will show at least a few signs.

01.01.2022 Fear is easy to put in. Sometimes all it takes is one negative experience for a being to become permanently scared of something, because the association made is... so strong. Fear is difficult to take out. Once an animal has become afraid of something, it can take very careful work: first to undo the negative association and then to build a new, positive one. Dogs can become afraid of all sorts of things and this isn't always the result of faulty genetics or abuse. A baby gate that comes crashing to the ground, a negative experience with another dog, a scary experience while alone (think fireworks or thunderstorm) can do the job in an adult dog. Neophobia (fear of new or unfamiliar things) can be hard to treat, but a qualified trainer may be the right place to start.
