19.01.2022 At Yoorami Vacation Care and OSH the young people have been engaging in loose parts play in the outdoor environment. With a range of donated equipment such as crates, wooden boxes, wood, tarps, materials, seats, tyres, witches hats and pallets, the young people build, design and redesign their play spaces daily. The young people build forts, bases and other constructions. Loose parts play is a type of play that supports invention, divergent thinking, problem solving and offers a sense of wonder to children. In 1972, architect Simon Nicholson developed the Theory of Loose Parts; the idea that loose parts, materials which can be moved around, designed and redesigned, and tinkered with; create infinitely more opportunities for creative engagement than static materials and environments.

14.01.2022 Throughout the month of August in the lead up to Fathers Day, our services are exploring the importance of males in the lives of children and young people. Glenmore Park Child & Family Centre asked the children about males that are important to them, and drew pictures of themselves with that person and what activities they love doing together. This sparked meaningful conversations around who they have in their lives and how they play their special role.

14.01.2022 On 24 August 2020 the children in the Kookaburra room at Glenmore Park Child and Family Centre created a special book that included all the things that the important males in their lives do with them. Each child drew a picture, expressed who their drawing was about and what they do together. Once all of the drawings were finished, the educators turned them into a book and read this with the children at group time. The children were very excited to see their work in a book! Throughout the month of August our centres are celebrating the importance of males in children and young peoples lives.

11.01.2022 Over the past month the young people at Emu Village have enjoyed a new search and find game which is a twist of the classic, Where's Wally books. The first day involved hiding a mixture of the young peoples’ photos around the room environment and asking the young people to find these pictures. This activity was an instant hit and it wasn't too long before the pictures were repositioned and new games commenced. The young people enjoyed it so much that they asked to have it aga...in the next day and before we knew it a new and different version of ‘Where's Wally’ occurred on a daily basis. The young people continued with searching for their peers’ pictures, and eventually the search evolved. Some of the hunts included looking for different cartoon characters from throughout the years, with some modern, some retro, different gaming and superheroes, a Halloween search, State of Origin and NAIDOC inspired searches which included looking for different symbols around the environment. The experience was further enhanced by a small quiz which was added to help identify who we were looking for and expand their general knowledge on each topic. This added to the young peoples’ interest and enthusiasm. The activity was most definitely enjoyed by all with many young people requesting this daily. During one of our young peoples’ meetings it was decided that this will continue on a weekly basis until the end of the year where it would then be reviewed. The young people were able to draw on a lot of different skills to participate in the experience including social skills, negotiation, recognition and cognitive skills as well as some leadership and group skills that allowed them to assist each other fairly. The skills used within the experience are very reminiscent of what occurs within Aboriginal communities. Deep thinking occurs through exploring information that creates understanding from symbols and images. Within the young peoples’ ‘Where's Wally’ exploration they were able to consistently use symbols and images to enhance their learning and knowledge.

01.01.2022 At Rainbow Cottage Childrens Centre, we understand the importance of good sustainability practices and work on teaching the children on how to implement it in their daily routines. The children at Rainbow Cottage cared for and harvested lettuce in the veggie patch in the garden. They took such good care of their plants that the produce thrived and was more than ready to be eaten. We collected all the leaves and put them in a basket and if any of the parents wished to take some home with some children even encouraged their parents to do so. The children learnt the importance of healthy eating through growing their own produce, and that being outdoors near the plants can be very enjoyable and satisfying.
