19.01.2022 Phil and Deb's Garden Care Plus are still here to tend to your lawns, gardens and any outdoor handyman jobs. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury to stay home and self isolate but we are very careful about how we are going about things (my son and I are vulnerable). Phil will not greet you at your door but if you could explain what jobs need doing over the phone and if needed show Phil on the day while sticking to the social distancing rules. Please keep supporting us while you can. I know this pandemic will eventually have a trickle down effect to us when the unemployment levels keep rising but we are battling on for now. Call Phil and Deb's Garden Care Plus today on 0429012990.

17.01.2022 I haven't been happy with the commercial seed raising mixes I have been buying (not achieving the results) so I searched the internet for recipes. Below are recipes for different situations. I am trying them now so stay tuned for results in a couple of months. Seed Raising Mix 2 parts compost 2 parts coir peat... 1 part sand Striking Cuttings Equal parts: compost coir peat sand perlite Transplant Seedlings 7.5 litres coir peat 7.5 litres vermiculite 4 litres compost, sieved 2 tablespoons organic fertiliser Flowers, Vegetables and Tropicals 23 litres coir peat 17 litres perlite 23 litres compost 1 1/2 cups granular complete fertiliser Succulents and Cacti 11.5 litres coir peat 4 litres perlite 4 litres vermiculite 7.5 litres course sand *NOTE: Some of these recipes make a lot so divide each by 2 or 4 if you require much less. Measurements do not have to be that precise. I rounded up or down and used a 2 litre ice cream bucket for measuring.

16.01.2022 A tip from Phil and Deb's Garden Care Plus for improving sleep with plants:

15.01.2022 COMFREY FERTILISER Comfrey leaves stimulate healthy tissue formation so it makes a great natural fertiliser. You will need: comfrey leaves enamel bucket... heavy stone water funnel bottle 1. Collect enough leaves to layer nearly to the top of an enamel bucket and place a heavy stone on top of them. 2. Add 450ml of water and leave to rot in a warm place for about a month. 3. Drain hte liquid from the bucket and store in a clean, labeled bottle. 4. To use, make a solution of one part comfrey liquid to four parts water and feed it to growing plants of all kinds.

09.01.2022 WHY I HATE WEED MAT by Deb de Koning Time and time again I see landscape gardeners planting new gardens and using weed mat. As a horticulturist I have to say I think weed mat is the worst product you can buy, not to mention waste your money on. There is not one good reason I can think of why landscape gardeners would use weed mat except purely for profit. For one thing it does not prevent weeds at all. Think about it. You lay down weed mat, cut out holes for your plants, pop ...the plants in and then usually bark is put on top of the plastic. In about 3-5 years the bark layer usually needs to be topped up. Ten years down the road your lovely garden is no longer weed free because the bark layer has broken down into compost and you have a lovely fertile layer of soil for the weeds to grow in. The weed mat is also not good for the health of the plants because it does not allow enough water to penetrate the weed mat effectively and therefore the soil layer beneath the mat becomes extremely compacted. I don't imagine many worms would like the environment under the weed mat and worms are necessary for nice fertile soil. The only place I would ever use weed mat would be under gravel and I wouldn't put plants in gravel because inorganic mulches don't add any nutrients to your garden to feed the plants. See more

08.01.2022 Plants for under trees/dappled shade: Cliveas Hellebores Cyclamens Arthropodium cirratum... Bergenia x schmidtii Acanthus mollis (can be weedy so don't plant it if you ever want to get rid of it but a beautiful plant with nice flowers and tough as old boots) The challenges in planting under trees are the lack of water because the tree steals it all and the roots of the tree. Jane Edmanson from Gardening Australia recommends building the soil level up a bit but others advice against it because it may kill the tree. These plants are shallow rooted so you can build soil up a little and add some cow manure and compost but don't go overboard for the health of your tree. Try not to disturb tree roots. The other consideration is the tree's canopy. Plants will not do well under trees with heavy canopies that don't allow any light in so best to open up the canopy a bit by some pruning or only plant under trees which let some light through because no plant will survive in deep shade.

08.01.2022 A tip from Phil and Deb's Garden Care Plus for Pome fruit: Prune your apple, pear, nashi and quince trees in winter once they drop their leaves. The purpose of ...pruning your pome fruit is to keep the tree at a manageable height so you can easily access the fruit, make it easier to net and also to produce larger fruit. Prune out any dead or diseased branches and low hanging branches. Prune out any inward facing branches and also any crossing over branches. Prune back the new growth to about 3-4 nodes above last season's scar (so leaving about 4 nodes of new growth on the bush.

05.01.2022 So I did get some compost out of this finally but it took way longer than it should have. The bays aren't big enough to get a hot compost heap which composts faster and kills all the weed seeds. In 12 months it was almost completely composted but still have a few leaves not quite broken down properly.

03.01.2022 Well I decided to try the rose cutting in the potato trick to see if this propagation method is fact or fiction. So I cut my favourite red rose just below a bud..., dipped it in honey, cut a cross section in a potato and popped the rose cutting in. I then planted the potato just under the soil and we will see if this works and how long it will take. See more
