16.01.2022 Too often patients present with a diagnosis determined purely by imaging results. This may be accompanied by negative perceptions around their injury due to misinformation from others and/or Dr. Google. As a result, many patients internalise these explanations of why they have pain and in turn reach the conclusion that they can no longer be the sporting athlete, function in the same capacity at their job or interact in certain recreational activities. Imaging provides a piec...e of the puzzle and does provide some insight into your clinical presentation. However, tissue damage as you see it on imaging is not necessarily indicative of why you have pain. In the vast majority of cases, it is not a dismissal of your return to life as it were as a parent, artist, distance runner or barre enthusiast. The key is to keep your recovery functionally focused, making the end point something meaningful that makes you feel like you again.

15.01.2022 Learning to exercise with good technique is an off shoot of the larger topic of movement literacy. What we are really trying to achieve in rehab is instilling confidence in you to move well. Moving well for you might look different to moving well for the next person on the basis that we are are shaped differently, have different health backgrounds and histories. So of course we factor these into a treatment plan, but the key is to not get caught up in overly rigid framework...s. Exercising well does not and should not involve unnecessarily strict formulas which perpetuate the notion that unless you’re moving perfectly you are going to injure yourself. We are inherently resilient. We are locomotive beings designed for movement. Your rehab program should, in a nutshell, be focused on enabling you to move without fixating on the trivial, unimportant details of what every segment of your body is doing through that movement.

15.01.2022 Dry Needling: How It Works Dry needling has a local effect on the tissue into which the needle is inserted, but its primary mechanism is to modulate the central nervous system. That is to say, needling has a calming effect which in turn relaxes your system and reduces your pain response. Dry needling can be used for a wide variety of conditions to help you feel and move better.

15.01.2022 Pain isn’t quantifiable in objective terms. You can't measure it out in a way that can be seen. It’s subjective, self-reported and relative to your lived experiences. The pain experience is a product of an in-built system that produces a memory which you retain. And that memory is something your brain remembers because ultimately, the pain experience is designed to alert you of threat in the present and with similar occurrences in the future. Your body is capable of reactivat...ing an old pain experience when it feels vulnerable due to factors such as deconditioning, pacing difficulties and heightened emotional stress. So, the next time you’re feeling a resurgence of pain that seemingly comes out of nowhere, acknowledge that there can be other contributing factors even in the absence of traumatic injury. Remember, pain is a normal human response and the output is treatable. . . Image via @ritualofme

14.01.2022 Have you been paying attention? When it comes to movement, there aren’t exercises that are bad for you per se, just bad ways of doing things. This comes down to load managements principles and being cognisant of what you’re feeling when you’re doing an activity. The anecdote to the engrained mechanisms around movement and function requires a countercultural approach: deliberate and thoughtful movement, careful observation, slowing down and processing the messages your body provides to generate a more desirable output reduced pain and optimised function. On the blog now. Link in bio.

13.01.2022 Breathing Because it’s so innate, we rarely give it much thought. When stressed, our breathing patterns can change sharper, shorter and less efficient breaths. We also change which part of our lungs we breathe from - often, this becomes an apical breathing pattern in which most movement is contained to the chest. Breathing techniques can be a powerful tool in helping to calm down your body, help you relax and reset your mind. ... Try this: inhale deeply through your nose for 5 seconds. Focus on making your belly expand first and feel your chest rise only at the end of the breath. As you exhale through your mouth, imagine you are blowing out through a straw. Squeeze out all the air as if you were deflating a balloon. Aim to make the exhale last for 5 seconds. Repeat x10. A good practice for checking in with your body through the day.

01.01.2022 This is 30. I’m not normally one for posts like this, but I couldn’t let the opportunity go by in consideration of all that the last year has been. 29 marked one of my most challenging years, but it was also a year of exceptional growth. Yesterday was not the day I would’ve imagined it would be (said by everyone for any day of significance in 2020), but it was an in-my-face reminder of the abundance of amazing people I have in my life who will go to great lengths and spare n...o measure of extravagance to show their love. Thank you to all those near and far who made the day so special with your messages, cards, calls, signs on fences, flowers, fancy dinners and gifts. You know you’ve got it good when the hardest part of your day is having to continually answer the door to get free stuff. It really has been the most memorable birthday yet. I feel the richest knowing that I am surrounded by the realest of the real. Bring on 30!
