24.01.2022 Yes Toto, we are not in Kansas any more!! Sometimes we get so attached to an idea in our heads that is hard to let it go. For example, as a professional migrant, we focus on getting a job similar to what we had before migrating. It makes sense! It is something that we are familiar with, already good at and even something that we love!!! Or is it? I graduated as a criminologist and worked in crime prevention before migrating, but I have changed careers many times since then.... My studies and experience have given me many transferable skills that I've used from job to job. Moving countries changed everything around me, and it changed me too. Opportunities were always there, just in different ways, I had to learn to look at the world from a new perspective so that I could recognise those opportunities... And take them! Everything we do - big or small, studies, courses, jobs, meeting new people, new conversations, cultural experience, civic participation, etc., prepare us for the new being that we are meant to be!! And then I realise that I am in Oz now!! So get your ruby slippers and summon the courage you need to follow the yellow brick road and find what your heart desires!!! #migrantlife #personalgrowth #comfortzone #professionaldevelopment

19.01.2022 Since I migrated to Australia, I spent many years of my life feeling different. For a long time I didn't feel that I fitted in, that if I was being myself others will judge me, that I was always standing out for the wrong reasons, so I chose to make myself small. As I met different people, tall, small, white, dark, gay, strait, able, disable, aboriginal, migrants, single, in a relationship, men, women... I realise that deep down, most of us feel like that in some way or anot...her. And then I realise that instead of feeling different it is better to feel unique and embrace ourselves for who we are, without comparing ourselves to others. A scientific eminence A just married couple An award-winning chef A talented artist When you were making those images in your head, did you think of a woman, a person of color, a person with a disability, a migrant, an aboriginal, a gay couple, an unattractive or poor or elderly person? If the answer is no to at least one of them, don't worry !! The bad news is that you are not the only one, in fact it happens to most of us!!! Most peopl tend to unconsciously favor able, white, Anglo-Saxon, straight, professional, good-looking, young and rich men!!!! And if you are not in one or more of those categories, believe it or not, you are discriminating against yourself and others like you. Crazy right!! The good news is that you already know what your unconscious biases are. Congratulations!!.
