22.01.2022 PEOPLE OF THE PORT... PAST & PRESENT We recently sat down with former port employee GEOFF WHITE, who was delighted to provide a brief personal account of time spent at Port of Portland / Portland Harbor Trust (1955 1992). Geoff writes "I joined the Portland Harbor Trust (PHT) staff on 7 December 1955 as an Administrative Officer aged 20 years. I was advised of the vacancy by my later wife to be Aileen Weston, who commenced duty with the PHT as a typist in 1953 in the orig...inal staff office at 91 Bentinck Street, Portland (pictured). Aileen and I were married in 1959, thereupon she was required to resign from her permanent position in accordance with state public service type conditions that applied to PHT staff at that time to married women. About 1962 I was promoted to Senior Clerk, then Chief Clerk. Later in 1966 to Industrial / Personnel Officer, and later again to Human Resources Manager, which role I carried out until my retirement in 1992, after 37 years of service. During my career pre and post the modern port opening in 1960, PHT employee’s duties were many and varied, including quarry, crusher, workshops, railways construction, general maintenance, stores, slipway, towage, pilotage, mooring gangs, dredging, cold store, weighbridges, grain terminal, administrative and professional staff. Many of whom were ex World War II service personnel of various ranks. I believe ours was the second largest project after the snow mountains authority at that time. My duties as Industrial Officer then Human Resources Manager involved negotiations with about 15 unions, establishing relevant coverage under about 12 different Federal and State Awards, resolving demarcation disputes, and various employee issues. All of these required appearances in the Arbitration Commission and many meetings in venues in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory and Tasmania. Looking back, I feel so privileged to have worked with the legendary K. S. Anderson (Chairman of the PHT to 1960). Unlike any workplace of today, it was a military type operation where all senior officers and employees were on a mission sharing the Chairman’s vision of a secure and prosperous future for the modern Port of Portland." It was great to have the opportunity to speak to Geoff and get some insights into the working environment during the early construction of the port. We look forward to welcoming the community to our 60 Year Anniversary virtual exhibition. Visit us at https://www.portofportland.com.au/60-year-anniversary-gall/ from 2 November 2020.
