25.01.2022 Goal setting for things we want to achieve in the new year is something many of us are familiar with. However many dont stop to consider WHO we want to become & actively take steps to move closer towards that person. We can do this by first identifying our VALUES. Ask yourself "what is really important to me?" "What do I want to be known for?" "What do I want to stand for?". Write a list and pick your top 8. Then make a goal for how you can increase that value in your life over the next week, month or 3 months. #values #goalsetting #selfimprovement #personalgrowth #mindsetshift

25.01.2022 Self injury signs & symptoms are not always easy to spot as many people perform these activities in secret & hide the evidence. Some not so obvious signs that someone might be engaging in self harm include: unexplained injuries such as scratches & burns. unexplained physical complaints such as headaches or stomach pains. wearing clothing inappropriate to weather conditions (i.e. Long sleeves/pants in very hot weather) Hiding objects that could be used for self harm in... unusual places such as the back of drawers. If you suspect someone you know is self harming, a conversation can be a powerful tool to let them know you are here to support them & help get them linked in with a health professional. If you are stuck on "What to say" BeyondBlue offer some great advice on their website which we highly recommend you check out! . #selfinjuryawareness #selfharmawareness #psychology #psychologycafe #psychologymilkbar See more

24.01.2022 People who self harm may be secretive or feel ashamed about their behaviour. It helps to talk calmly and non-judgmentally about your concerns. SANE Australia recommends doing the following: Encourage the person to see a doctor or other health professional about the self harming. Suggest options for getting help, rather than directing the person what to do. Do not hesitate to call emergency services on 000 if you think the person is at risk of serious injury. Remember... that you cannot stop someone from self harming and it is not your responsibility when they do. You can only do your best to encourage them to get help. . #selfinjuryawareness #selfharmawareness #mentalhealth #psychologycafe #psychologymilkbar See more

23.01.2022 "Infidelity is the worst thing that can happen in a marriage, right? Think again. Whilst marital unfaithfulness is a devastating betrayal, the MOST damaging thing you can do in your marriage is to allow resentment to build". 20.01.2022 Achieving your goals is great but will only bring short-term happiness. For lasting fulfilment in life the key is to live a life that is VALUES-FOCUSED. How do we do this? First step is to Identify what your values are. Then consider your values each time you have a decision to make. Ask yourself "is this decision moving me towards or away from my values?" #psychologycafe #happiness #psychology

20.01.2022 Some statistics suggest that as many as 1 in 5 females and 1 in 7 males have engaged in self-injury at one point in their life. Australian statistics from 2008-09 indicate 27.3% of treated self harm cases were between ages 15-24yrs, 45.3% were between 25-44yrs & 21.6% between 45 to 64yrs. The good news is, psychological treatments have been found to be greatly effective in reducing self harming behaviours & their underlying causes. . . #selfharmawareness #selfinjuryawareness #mentalhealth #psychologycafe

19.01.2022 Can't stop procrastinating? Try the "Just 5 minutes" principle. Tell yourself you will do just 5 minutes of work. Once you start, what you will usually find is you keep going - for 10, 20, 30 minutes or more! The biggest hurdle is beginning a task - so if it seems less overwhelming you are more likely to approach it rather than avoid! #procrastinationtips #approachratherthanavoid #productivity #worktip #studytip #houseworktip

19.01.2022 Happy New Year from all of us at Psychology Cafe! No doubt the goal setting & planning for 2018 is in full swing! Did you know that when it comes to goal setting there is both negative and positive motivation? Negative motivation is related to those things you want to get RID of like "I want to lose 10kgs" or "I want to quit smoking". Positive motivation, on the other hand, is what you want to GAIN. For example, "I want to gain my health back" or "I want to gain freedom from... my addiction". Negation motivation usually gets us to the start line, but positive motivation is what helps us to continue with momentum to see those plans through to completion. So as you make your 2018 plans think about what it is you want to GAIN not just RID from these changes or plans in your life & watch the motivation continue well past January! #goalsetting #newyearsresolution #motivation #fitness #beataddiction #improverelationships See more

19.01.2022 Self harm isnt usually intended to be life-ending. There are many reasons why people deliberately injure themselves but many people describe self-harm as a way of coping with feeling numb or intense pain, distress or unbearable negative feelings, thoughts or memories. While people who self-harm may not intend to end their lives, the consequences of this risky behaviour can be fatal, and it needs careful assessment and care by a health professional. If you or someone you know is self-harming an important first step would be to visit your local GP or a psychologist for an assessment and to discuss a treatment plan. #selfinjuryawareness #selfharmawareness #psychologycafe #psychologymilkbar #mentalhealth

18.01.2022 When we are stressed our body releases a hormone called Cortisol. Elevated levels of cortisol, over time, can increase our chances of developing a number of health problems & cause our stress levels to soar. Regular exercise has been shown to decrease the usual amount of cortisol in our bloodstream, leading to a reduction in symptoms of stress. Research has shown the best type of exercise is aerobic exercise such as brisk-walking, cycling, running & stair climbing for at least 30mins.

14.01.2022 Although self injury may be a way for a person to communicate to others that they may not be coping, it is very rarely only an "attention-seeking" behaviour. Self-harm is often a sign that a person needs help for a mental health problem associated with the behaviour. This might be an anxiety or depression disorder or another condition. It is therefore very important to see a GP or other health professional, such as a psychologist for assessment and to discuss a treatment plan. Treating the underlying causes will ultimately be the key in decreasing the self harming behaviour. . #selfinjuryawareness #selfharmawareness #mentalhealth #psychologycafe

09.01.2022 Self injury is more common in girls, however it is not unheard of in boys. In fact, it may just be that girls are more willing to get help than boys and therefore current statistics may underrepresent the percentage of boys that engage in self harm. Typically, girls are reported to engage in more cutting behaviours whereas boys are more likely to hit or burn. #selfharmawareness #selfinjuryawareness #mentalhealth #psychologycafe #psychologymilkbar
