24.01.2022 We’re so excited to be publishing a new biography of Fiona Foley, written by Louise Martin-Chew! 24.01.2022 Six mini solo-exhibitions brought together under one banner, ‘Odd Bedfellows’ explores the sub-tropical contextual bond between these artists: as Queenslanders, and as artists in the QUT Art Collection, allowing QUT’s holdings of these artists to be seen comprehensively for the first time. Artists include Davida Allen, Fiona Foley, Joe Furlonger, Robert MacPherson, Tyza Stewart, and June Tupicoff. The exhibition continues to 8 November, and you can visit us in-person or take the interactive virtual tour https://bit.ly/QUTAM-oddbedfellows-virtualtour. #qutartcollection #qutartmuseum

23.01.2022 Can you see the rhythm in this collage? QUT fashion alumna Nadia Hernández’s creative practice is colourful and bold, filled with optimism. Shaped by the artist’s childhood in Venezuela, her works use vibrant shapes, patterns and often text that reference abstractionism and protest banners Like a young Dick Bruna, Hernández draws upon her imagination to dream new and exciting stories, which you’ll be able to see in ‘miffy & friends’ from Saturday! bit.ly/qutartmuseum-miffyand...friends #miffyqut #miffyandfriends QUT Alumni & Friends QUT Creative Industries Image: Nadia HERNÁNDEZ ‘Aquí también soñaba (Here I also dreamt)’ 2020 paper, oil, flashe, acrylic on Stonehenge paper courtesy the artist Photo: Louis Lim

23.01.2022 Dick Bruna (1927-2017) was a Dutch artist, author and illustrator. Miffy, the enchanting little white bunny (or ‘nijntje’ in Dutch), evolved from a bedtime story Bruna created for his young son over 65 years ago. As an artist, his practice was heavily influenced by Matisse, Léger and Mondrian and Miffy is grounded in ideas of 20th century modernism. ‘miffy & friends’ opens tomorrow at 12pm! bit.ly/qutartmuseum-miffyandfriends #miffyqut #miffyandfriends... 23.01.2022 #DidYouKnow Miffy’s cult-like status in Japan and similarities to that country’s biggest pop culture icon, Hello Kitty, leads many to incorrectly assume her origins as Japanese. In fact, Miffy’s pedigree lies firmly in the European avant-garde and the formal visual language of modernism. According to QUT Gallery Director and exhibition curator, Vanessa Van Ooyen, Miffy grew from Dick Bruna’s experience as a young student immersed in the contemporary art scene of 1940s and 50s... Paris. Bruna’s desire to honour colour and form over perspective, to acknowledge the value of the inner child, and to engage across media, discipline and process fuelled the creation of this enchanting little bunny. Pick up a copy of the ‘miffy & friends’ catalogue to learn more about Miffy’s origin story. #miffyqut #miffyandfriends Photo Louis Lim

22.01.2022 We’re proud to be a part of University Art Museums Australia (UAMA) and to have contributed to this report on the vital role university art galleries play in the sector.

22.01.2022 Did you know there are hundreds of QUT Art Collection works on display around the university? Queensland artist Tom Risley’s ‘Chair’ 1992 was recently installed in the Kelvin Grove library. Risley (1947-2010) was a sculptor who often used found objects in his practice. Weathered materials, like the carved wood and pumice stone in ‘Chair’, cleverly allude to the relationship between natural matter and climate. The QUT Art Collection is shared with the QUT community in public s...paces and offices throughout QUT campuses. 21.01.2022 As an author and guest curator, Nick Earls is happy behind-the-scenes. In honour of his birthday today, we’re sharing his thoughts on becoming part of the story I hadn't planned to appear on the walls during the exhibition, but the gallery team suggested it, as it fitted with the way the story was being told. We looked at a few options and I went for this one since, like Bill’s portraits, it can be read in more than one way, one of which might say something about inflated ...self-importance. One way to read it is that it’s an exuberant fan (me) asking a question of the artist. Another is that it’s me, ludicrously mansplaining his own art to a long-suffering Bill. I’ll leave it up to viewers to decide. Nick Earls, curator of ‘By the Book’, now showing at the William Robinson Gallery. Happy birthday, Nick! 20.01.2022 Cultural memory is always embedded within place. Sancintya Mohini Simpson’s ‘Remnants of my ancestors' draws on her mother’s journey from India to South Africa, where indentured labour was common from the 1860s until the 1920s. The narration explores her connections to these landscapes. Don’t miss this timely exhibition - ‘On Earth’ closes next Sunday! More info: bit.ly/qutartmuseum-onearth... 19.01.2022 When it comes to natural beauty, we’re spoilt for choice in Queensland, and for ‘Odd Bedfellows’ artist June Tupicoff, choosing just one favourite spot wasn’t easy! Whether she’s on the windy shores of Minjerribah/North Stradbroke island; in the high rainforest of the Atherton Tablelands; on the sandy beaches of K’Gari/Fraser Island; or at the ‘lungs of Brisbane’, Mt Coot-tha, Tupicoff draws energy and inspiration from being outdoors and immersed in nature. 16.01.2022 Look closely and you’ll see rabbit motifs are a recurring theme in Vipoo Srivilasa’s practice, as is the use of the colours blue and white: significant colours in both Thai and Dutch ceramic tradition. Srivilasa’s characters are multi-faceted, bound with many meanings. ‘miffy & friends’ presents some of Srivilasa’s renowned ceramic works, including ‘Chloris 1’, reflecting the importance of cross-cultural influences on his practice. bit.ly/qutartmuseum-miffyandfriends #miffyq...ut #miffyandfriends Image: Vipoo SRIVILASA ‘Chloris 1’ 2019 porcelain, mixed media and high saturate blue paint courtesy the artist and Edwina Corlette Gallery, Brisbane Photo: Andrew Barcham

16.01.2022 We’re so excited that Melbourne-based artist, Carla McRae is part of our upcoming exhibition, ‘miffy & friends’! Responding to Dick Bruna, the creator of Miffy, McRae has built a shelving system in typical De Stjil fashion, housing replicas of objects she saw when visiting Bruna’s studio in 2016. McRae's objects have been lovingly hand-crafted from plywood and polymer clay, and you can see them up close when the exhibition opens on 21 November. bit.ly/qutartmuseum-miffyandfri...ends #miffyqut #miffyandfriends Image: Carla MCRAE ‘Dick Bruna’s shelf’ 2020 (detail) plywood, acrylic paint, synthetic polymer filler, polymer clay, plastic tube, cardboard tube courtesy the artist Photo: Mark Lobo

16.01.2022 dát vind ik mooi, riep nijntje uit dat met die kleuren daar het lijkt wel of het is geknipt met een gewone schaar ‘nijntje in het museum’... 12.01.2022 Warraba Weatherall’s powerful work, ‘Propagate’, uses uprooted ironbark and river red gum trunks, removed from their environments and placed inside large steel cages. The work makes comment on the impact of colonialism on our environment and addresses domination of the land and people as a viewpoint that was, and is, propagated through the land. 01.01.2022 If I look through the book, it has all these stories it is a narrative but within that narrative are all types of objects and artworks that are part of his story. I put that idea to the gallery, quite prepared for them to say ‘No, that’s not how we put exhibitions together’, but they didn’t. And because no one said ‘no’, it ended up happening.
