22.01.2022 Important information for holders of the Skilled Regional Provisional 489 visa, or applicants who currently have a 489 visa in the processing queue On 16 November 2019, the Skilled Regional Work (Provisional) 491 visa will commence operation. Commencement of the 491 visa will close the current Skilled Regional (Provisional) 489 visa. Important note transitional arrangements for current 489 visa holders... Holders of the 489 visa (or those who have a 489 visa currently being processed) are not affected by this change. They will continue to have access to the existing Skilled Regional 887 visa the permanent residency pathway for the 489 visa. The 887 visa will continue to operate to enable 489 visa holders to transition to permanent residency. For 489 visa holders, there is no change to the PR pathway through the 887 visa and they will be able to apply for this visa under the current requirements, that is, once you have lived in a designated regional area of Australia for 2 years, and you have worked 12 months of the 2 years in a designated regional area of Australia. Holders of the 489 visa who need to extend their stay in Australia in order to meet the 2 years living and 12 months working in a designated regional area can still make an application for a second 489 visa on and after 16 November 2019. Only holders of the 489 visa prior to 16 November 2019 are entitled to these transitional arrangements. This ensures they are not disadvantaged by the changes to commence later this year. Skilled Regional Work (Provisional) 491 visa It is very important to note that only 14,000 places have been allocated to the 491 visa for 2019-20. This means competition for this visa will be extremely tight. Subclass 191 - Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa The PR pathway for the 491 visa will be the new Skilled Regional 191 visa. To be eligible for the 191 visa, you must have held the 491 for at least 3 years and substantially complied with the conditions of the visa and condition 8579 (live, work and study (where relevant) in a designated regional area). You must meet a minimum threshold taxable income level for at least three years while holding the 491 visa. This salary threshold is to be specified by legislation. It is important to note that the 191 visa will have a 3 year qualifying period for holders of the 491 visa, compared to the 2 year qualifying period for the 887 visa for holders of the 489 visa. This means the 489 visa is a better visa to aspire for while you still can. Watch this space for information about changes to points test categories that will commence from 16 November 2019.
22.01.2022 Great news from the 2019 Budget announcement - Skilled Migration Points Test - Secondary Skilled Migrants From November 2019, points test will be adjusted to award additional points to the primary applicants, where their partner has competent English but cannot meet the requirements for skilled partner points. Please note, as this announcement has just been made today, no further details are available for now.

The GSM 2020/21 program year is scheduled to re-open from early August. Information relating to updated occupation lists, nomination requirements and criteria will be made available closer to program launch date.

Please note, there are no specific dates when we will conduct our invitation rounds. Once we receive a complete application for nomination, we will aim to finalise it within six weeks."

13.01.2022 NSW Treasury will begin accepting nominations for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa - Subclass 491) for a limited time. Applications will open on Monday 15 June 2020 and applications will cease to be accepted at 5pm on Tuesday, 23 June 2020. Applications will be assessed by the end of the financial year, Tuesday 30 June 2020. Only applicants who meet the following criteria will be assessed: all Department of Home Affairs’ criteria requirements for this visa, and... have an occupation on the NSW Stream 1 Regional Skilled Occupation List, and have been living in a designated regional area in NSW for at least the last 12 months, and have been working in a designated regional area in NSW for at least the last 12 months, and have been working in their nominated occupation, or a closely related occupation, for at least the last 12 months. Applicants that do not meet ALL of these requirements will have their applications declined.
